Following up this amazing R36S, wanted to share my find.

Yes it is $100+ device BUT you will get amazing 4" 1:1 LCD 720x720, wifi, more powerful RK3566 chip and horizontal form factor. Perfect device if you own Pico-8 and/or play Stardew Valley in it like I do. Multiple reviews crowned this device as Retro Gaming Device of the year.

Yellow is my faves. Remind me of my spirit Pokemon Psyduck..

Might order another one of new colour red/green/purple for SO

P.S chalk the original SD card straight to the bin when it arrives
P.S 2 'NEW' Aliexpress member may eligible for welcome deal for another US$2-3 discount.

  • For those who prefer other colours:

    • Green/Purple is a couple cents cheaper.
    • Blue/Black/Red/White is ~US$1 more.
  • This has replaced my Rg35xx. Love it 👍 Hope they do an RGB30 Plus.

  • Great description already have an R36S but this is decent value with the more powerful RK3566 chippie in it too.

I like this form factor for PS1/N64 onward games. The shoulder buttons are much more accessible/comfortable compared to the Gameboy shaped handhelds. IMO.

  • Perfect device if you're into vertical arcade shmups, Gameboy games or the Pico platform. It's a really cool device. I'd take this over the R36S.

  • You can play stardew valley on these? Take my money, saved me buying another switch, legend

    • +1

Welcome to Retro Gaming Console. Stardew Valley is beautiful in this little gem of device.

The things mentioned above by Orion and the ability for it to run Dreamcast games were what first sold me. I know I can't expect much for the price but for anybody who has owned one since launch (and has been actively using it), how are the buttons and dpad holding up?

    • Dreamcast? I imagined that would require something much more beefy for DC/PS2 and newer

      • Dreamcast is surprisingly easy to emulate. Easier than Saturn, funnily enough. I think it's on about par with N64 (maybe slightly harder)

        • Oh. Wow. I need me some jetset radio and metropolis Street racer!

    • Been using this since November and tbh I like button on RG35XX more in term on softness. No failure on buttons so far.

  • Already own horizontal ones:
    Vita
    N3ds
    Hacked switch

I want vertical but waiting rg35xx plus to go down around $60

  • Great find. The RK3566 chip is great at emulating the old consoles, and does a good job at emulating the harder ones including PSP, dreamcast and N64.

It's the same chipset as the Powkiddy X55, except the X55 has a 5.5" screen and Nintendo switch button layout. Also it's $15ish dollars more direct from powkiddy.

  • I grabbed a Green one yesterday from this seller. Not the best price, but ok. I got one for $60 USD during BF, but that one died when I connected a QC 3.0 charger, so be careful if you buy one.

I have seen reports of fast chargers not working on these things, but not seen reports of them dying, so maybe I just got a bad one. I could smell burning shortly after I connected the charger. I can still use it, but only with the battery disconnected and the device connected to a non-fast charger.

Nice device though, which is why I ordered another. I just hope the seller is legit!

    • +2

Yeah the charging in these devices is really bizarre. I can only charge mine with the cable it came from, on a slow charger, whilst the device is on. Sounds crazy, but it just won't charge otherwise.

  • Course this comes up just after I finally decide to bite the bullet on the R36S.

I should just stop ever buying anything 😂

    • Just buy this as well :D I bought an RG35XX I saw on here, then 3 weeks later I also had an R36S and RGB30 lol. Damm BF sales

      • Haha could barely justify buying the R36S but have finally learnt to not do ridiculous 'incremental' updates that cost you more in the long run for worst results but wanted something for when I travel/are away from home.

If only I was allowed to bring electronic devices to work when on nightshift or I'd just go the full hog and buy a Steamdeck instead 😂

Would it be better to buy a backbone controller and use your phone?

    • I pulled the trigger on one of these, but I would be curious to hear why people still want a dedicated device.

      • +1

Yeah i got my son the rg35xx and thought he could have used his phone.
Carrying the backbone would be similar to carrying the emulator and phone anyway.

        1. Save my phone's battery life
        2. Cheap (r36s)
        3. Shareable
        4. Plug a play.
        5. Just as pocketable

4:3 content kinda sucks on a phone too. Those black bars on a 21:9 display… Ugh.

    • +1

I guess depends on preference, form factor and what phone you have. It’s hard for iPhone user to emulate anything but that’s hopefully change as ScummVM is now available on iOS.

  • Could not resist the yellow.
    Thanks op.
Love playing 2d platformers and this will be the perfect screen for it

  • Cheers OP just picked up the yellow one. Have been looking for something for GB, GBC the older stuff so this should fit the bill! And it's got hdmi out so hopefully that works ok too.

  • This has been cheaper from more reputable sellers recently ($90-$95 delivered during the end of 2023 sales). This is the first batch being sold by this store, with no reviews left yet for this product

  • As Dr Nick would say….what da hell is that ?

  • i would like to play mostly ps1 and gba games, but i already have a miyoo mini plus - is this still worth picking up?

    • +1

I guess it depends on how comfortable you find the miyoo. I had one recently and couldn’t deal with the vertical controls and the way the shoulder buttons were at the back of the system. I think this one would be more comfortable. I picked one up while it was on sale so I’m keen to give it a try when it gets here.
