No, no, no, no, no. Don’t do it. Flimsy as all buggary.

Montgomery or Pinnacle from Bunnings are so much better and often on sale. Or better yet, grab some metal archive shelving / racking from EBay next time they have a 10-15% discount code available…

    • +1

Can you tell us more about this archive shelving / racking, haven't spotted that before.

      • +22

I’ve used Skyteck, who have pickup locations in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane - which is necessary to avoid the freight cost of these substantial units. There’s a few other suppliers on EBay, but Skyteck frequently participate in the limited sellers discount coupons. Huge range of heights and widths available from 1m - 6m.

As someone who has experimented with Giantz and other cheapies, Bunnings, SCA and similar units - the all metal construction, build quality, 200kg+ shelf tolerances and extra shelf depth make these game changers.

          Thank you 🙂

        • +2

Aww not Perth. But thank you I’ll keep looking

Edit: they do have Perth. Yay

          • +1

@rpb: Try different search combo’s of garage + shelving + racking + archive etc.

Hope you find someone who supplies locally, since freight from the east coast would likely dwarf the GPD of a modest African nation…

Edit: yay indeed! Now fill your basket and wait for a suitable 15%+ discount code…

        • How’s the quality with skyteck ? Is it heavy duty and are you happy with it ? Thinking about picking one up on the weekend

        • Hey UncleRico, do you still pay for delivery or is the local pickup free. I'm a bit confused?

          thanks

          • @Wh33ls: Local pick up is free, you can select local pick up on checkout

            • @ozvictor: I tried and it didn't work, will try again. Thanks

              • @Wh33ls: I found a code which might be useful, I order two 2 x 2m so it’s $332, the code “Saveth” will take $30 off

        • +1

wow, I have a bunch of the Bunnings ones and reckon they're at a good balance between cost and weight/sturdiness, but certainly wouldn't advise going any lighter. I'm surprised that anyone is selling anything flimsier (well, not really).

          Thanks for the PSA

          Nice rack!

        • Great options

    • +5

yes, and I am never buying bare MDF shelves again, so much possibly toxic dust and fumes, then they absorb moisture and can go mouldy in a not well sealed garage - including the Bunnings ones

      • +6

Yep. MDF and wire shelving are both false economies for shelves.

Best bet is to replace either with proper timber. At the very least MDF should be painted and sprayed with anti-mould spray to improve them, but they’ll still bow under weight or any hint of moisture…

        • i ended up buying laminated particle board shelves (i.e. like white laminex style) to retrofit to my shelf frames so I can throw out the MDF ones… but given they aren't the OEM MDF precise width and there's only a few mm wide lip to sit them on, I haven't quite worked out how to secure them to the flimsy frames yet without it looking quite dodgy.
I should have just spent more on better shelves in the first place.

          • +1

@MrFrugalSpend: I did similar with some sheets of melamine which I got them to cut to size before adding iron-on edging on the cut side, which works.

But then wet cardboard is an improvement on MDF…

        • Yep. MDF and wire shelving are both false economies for shelves.

What's wrong with wire shelving- is it just a PITA or is it weak and end up bending?

          • @rumblytangara: I've never had a problem with wire shelving. They aren't suitable for all items, obviously anything smaller or flat can fall through.

The main downside is probably looks for me. Not a shelf I would want to leave out. The other issue is cost, they aren't expensive but do cost more than equivalent cheapo MDF shelf.

I use a lot of wire shelves. Also have the bunnings rack it 1000kg with MDF in a workshop. Going with something better than MDF would jack up the price way too much - but anyone can go ahead and do that if they want. It's just a rectangle piece of material that you can cut yourself or get someone else to cut.

          • +1

@rumblytangara: In my experience, the wire mesh meant tippable items were less stable and couldn’t be slid across the shelf or pushed to the back without the chance of toppling over.

The ones I tried also didn’t sit flush with the shelf support and the sunken orientation made it even harder for items spanning multiple joined units or being slid on each shelf.

Jeebus thanks for helping me dodge the bullets

    • +1

      Thanks

    • Depends what you plan to store on the shelves. For me, it's only buckets, car wash bottles, fishing gear, few tins of paint etc. Great buy for me whose looking to keep the garage area neat.

      • +1

Yeah but apparently ozbargainers are storing pots of gold on their shelves so these won't do for them.

I used zip ties on mine to secure them to each other and the garage frame. Rock solid, but of course, I don't have any pots of gold on them.

    • How does the ebay 15% code work?

      • -1

        200kg per tier

I can't think of anything over this weight. Should do the job if use nicely. For this price, hard to beat, unless there is a good deal for the good quality.

        • Dexter may disagree ;)

    • hes right theyre trash. You can get the same thing discounted sometimes for $20 or so at bunnings etc. takes ages to build and flimsy asf

  • I wish I could get this style of racking custom made cheap for a wine room

  • +1

Good find with cashback. Appreciate it's not the sturdiest option out there but it looks like it'll be an upgrade from what I have in the shed right now.

  • +4

Own several of these, certainly not heavy duty but they serve their purpose perfectly. Seems like fair pricing to me.

  • Not sure if you get cashback with code ?

    • +1

You do because the code is listed on ShopBack app

  • Some post codes have delivery charges

  • +5

I've had a couple of these, just be sure to have very low expectations for what these can do and you'll be fine.

    • These can only handle very light contents before bending, it's a cardboard-thin MDF wafer for the shelves.
    • I would avoid buying if you plan to live in or put it somewhere humid. The shelves turned into a mushroom kingdom after some extended QLD rains.
    • The metal frame is so thin that it can wobble back and forth even fully assembled. However, I guess that makes it easy to carry around the place since it's so light.
  • +1

Only 13kg in weight can't be good.

  • AEDT time hmmmm would have bought 1 with the capped cashback

  • this or 2x SCA 4 Shelf Unit Powder Coated at 27$ ?

  • Bought one of these and they're very flimsy! The Montmorency shelves at Bunnings are much better. Picked one up from Bunnings for like $55.

  • From personal experience, you get what you pay for… (tried all of these)
As mentioned above quality is lacking
I found the following range quality @ Bunnings>Aldi>SCA>Giantz
