I wonder if these are real? So many fakes about

      Mate, they have a sticker!

If they are too good to be true then they are fake.

  • +1

Lol look how flat those wayfarers are. The genuine ones the lenses angle back in, so they stick further out at the arms, and cut in back to your cheek bones. Fakes always seem to be a flat 90°

    • +4

the new wayfarer style are flat 90 degrees, original ones are as you describe.

      • +2

Yes, but new wayfarers are style code RB2132, classic wayfarers are RB2140 in which these are listed as suposedly being. (The first ones on the site, where the thumbnail comes from)

They are more like a weird amalgamation of the 2.

They arent the genuine article, plenty of fake raybans etc on ebay for alot cheaper then this.

  • which ones did Maverick have ?

    All belong to Luxottica

There is an Adam ruins everything episode on this, he claims that Rayban used to be a cheap brand until they purchased them and upped the price 10 fold.

      • Yup. From memory they were service station sunglasses at some point.

    • Does anyone have any recommendations on good-looking UV400 alternatives not belonging to Luxottica?

      • +3

Maui Jims are great! Expensive but so good

        • +1

I 100% agree! Until my kid broke them all I had a few pairs. Lenses are better to view through too.

And they offer replacement parts for sale or even free!

      • +1

Serengeti are excellent. A bit more $$ than Maui Jim unless you get them on special though

        • Maui Jim is more expensive I think, bit you're spot on pointing to Bolle/Serengeti.

      • +1

Smith Optics claim “100% protection from harmful UVA/B/C rays”. I guess that would be comparable to UV400.

    • I don't see what's wrong with Luxottica. They manufacture licensed luxury sunglasses and sell them at luxury prices. Those brands they sell them for do the exactly the same with clothing. It's obvious the cost of manufacturing the sunglasses is minimal and it's the same with making cotton into a dress.

The 'sunglasses mafia' clickbate is just that. No one is claiming that Luxottica sunglasses are better for eye health than brands like cancer council that cost a fraction.

There is a luxury market and there is a huge customer base.

      PS
Sales are the time to buy Luxottica sunglasses and if your after a discount - try them on at a fashion boutique, take a photo of the model number and head to a trusted online store or wait for a sunglasses hut sale

One gripe I have with Ray Ban is they don't offer replacement lenses for sale. That's a pain! Gotta go aftermarket to replace them. I think they do offer a trade in discount for broken lense sunglasses working a certain timeframe.

      • +6

The problem is they bully their competitors and engage in unfair business practices. Namely, Luxottica own a large number of retail outlets for sunglasses and use that purchasing power to force competitors to comply with them (ie. keep prices above x amount) or even to buy them out (as happened with Rayband).

Much like how De Beers's monopoly allowed them to inflate the market for diamonds, Luxottica are a huge driving force of why regular sunglasses cost in the hundreds of dollars instead of the dozens.

        • +1

I see - makes sense. Their sunnies are only good on discount :-)

      • I don't see what's wrong…..

Ray Ban don't offer replacement lenses for sale.

        • +1

          I don't see what's wrong…

break a lens, you buy a pair of non genuine lenses to replace both lenses or buy another pair of overpriced sunglasses and throw the perfectly good frame and one lens into the rubbish bin.

      • +2

Ray-Ban do offer replacement lenses for sale.
Maybe not direct, but any optometrist with an account with Lux can order them.

Along with most replacement parts for most Lux brand frames. Temples, frame fronts, trims…

Some models obviously do get discontinued and parts are sometimes on back order but for the most part we have no problems ordering most stuff.

  • +1

Why do people still buy these?? don't people just buy the cheaper sunnies now that are online? Can't remember the names of the popular ones. I moved onto knockarounds about 3 years ago and they have held up great.

    • Wayfarer is a classic design. Though everyone makes similar design, it’s the quintessential sunglasses.

Because people like the way they look.

You generally pay for what you get….cheap sunglasses are just that…Cheap, and not good for your eyes.I pay a couple of hundred for polarized photochromic sunglasses from the likes of Tonic and if my eyes could talk they'd say Thank You.

    • +11

You don't need to spend hundreds for polarised photochromic sunglasses. You're just paying a luxury label tax.

I like transitions lenses because it's a conversation starter. Because people start the conversation assuming that I'm a paedophile, the relief the later experience can form the basis of fulfilling and londlasting friendships.

        • +2

I like transitions lenses because it's a conversation starter

"Yo mama so fat" jokes are a conversation starter also, but does not cost $$

          • +2

            @CocaKoala: Starter? Maybe. Ender? Definitely.

            • +2

@sh4hp: Yo mama so fat she ends conversations by eating them.

              • +1

@CocaKoala: Yup. Definitely sounds like the end of the conversation to me.

        • +2

I just took notes. Thank-you internet stranger!

  • Strange. These normally retail for around $180. I wonder if these aren't fakes.

    • +1

Probably not, I have gotten sub-$100 Raybans from Myer in the past on sale. (Not saying these aren't fake, but the price is not an indication)

    • nobody is buying sunglasses anymore after the "smart sunglasses" first came out from snapchat.
it made buying multi hundred dollar glasses that do nothing other than block sun look stupid.

in this case Rayban/Meta has come out with a whole range (different styles) of sunglasses that can play music record video take photos and even have onboard Meta AI assistant.

same deal with smart watches everyone buys those now instead of thousand dollar watches that can only tell time.

      • Sunglasses which can take photos and record video sounds like as spies paradise.

        • not exactly. might work for recording the occasional "public meltdown". but I have seen more weird creepy hidden cameras on youtube. ones that don't look like a camera such as a pen that goes in your pocket etc.

if you look up Rayban Meta they still have a obvious camera lens in the top corner of one of the sunglass lenses. and it lights up when it's being used so pretty obvious imo.

  • +4

My deal is a wild west marketplace so prob fake.

  • +3

For what it’s worth, i always got Ray Bans from sunglasses hut and they’ve been durable and high quality. Look great and lasted me years and years, so if on sale worth the cash. I get that Luxottica sucks though.

    • I second this.

And whenever I've wanted a change, there's a few stores on AliExpress which do replacement lenses. Great for a quick change in look.

<Insert disclaimer here about the dangers of Chinese lenses/sunglasses>

      • They have expressive R&D'd, self-sufficient hidden cameras with gsm built into the lens that you get for dirt cheap but allows them to watch you stroke your springroll.

  • +1

Any recommendations for cheap polarised sunnies?

    • I've briefly looked around and found https://www.sunnies.com.au, but I've never bought from them, so can't comment on the quality.

    • +4

      Cancer council are pretty good

Black ice are fine as well, not super stylish though

Goodr have a lot of colours (but not many designs) and are highly regarded by runners (but are fine for casual wear)

However recognise that you will be getting plastic/rubber frames on the whole with lenses that might scratch a bit more easily and are not as clear/precise as, say, Serengeti lenses.

I pretty much only wear cancer council as I’m tough on my sunglasses and have lost a few. But if you wear CC ones and then try a ‘quality’ pair like Serengeti or Maui Jim, you will notice the difference. Does it matter- not to me.

    • +4

Rubbish..I'm a fisherman and know about polarised photochromic sunglasses. Google Tonic sunglasses and you'll get some insight.

  • meanwhile I am looking like I'm from 2077 with my Lenovo Legion glasses on public transport. https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/accessories-and-software/vr-h…

more capable than the overpriced Rayban Meta by the way.
