The fat absorber instead of water in the water pan is a good tip, sand works as well.
Metal looks super cheap and thin. You're going to have heaps of issues with temperature control with this I reckon. Better off spending more on something thicker/better quality.
I think with vertical smokers metal thickness isn't that important.
A Weber smokey mountain has decent heat retention but has pretty thin steel. (likely thicker than the Lawson though). Where the Weber would destroy this (among other things) is it won't leak smoke/heat like the Lawson does. Yes the comparison is not fair because of the huge price difference, but you get what you pay for.
I've had plenty of cheap smokers and to me they aren't worth it, it just causes frustration and usually a bad or inconsistent end result.
I'd save up for something a little better tbh.
