      • Ah ok thanks. That's the info I needed.

Is this same or different? Got this for $100 refurb. Seems better than the one linked by OP?
    https://www.asus.com/product-compare?ProductID=22456,12355&L…
    Older but better hardware?
    Firmware and supportwise same?
    There seems to be three variants - rt-ax3000 v1, rt-ax3000 v2 and rt-ax3000p

  • Anyone know if this works with TPG? I am currently using their supplied router but the coverage is poor.

    • The ISP doesn't matter, the technology does. What is your current connection? HFC? FTTN? FTTP?

      • I am on FTTC in a 2 bedroom apartment. I'm hoping this will fix blind spot in the second room.

I am also thinking about getting this router for my parents who live in a double storey house using FTTN. Do you think this router will be sufficient? Or should i get 2 of the same router and do the AI mesh?

        • For FTTC and HFC you can directly use the WAN port on this router, connected to your NBN Connection Box. For FTTN you need a VDSL2 modem (your parents probably already have one, just see my answer to another comment here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14762709/redir )

No idea about double storey coverage, it depends on many factors. It might be a better idea to buy two, and return one (no free returns, but Amazon return labels are only ~$7) if one is sufficient.

          • @bio: Thanks for replying. This is really helpful. I'll give it a test run.

Or grab a next to free used laptop, take out battery, buy a vertical laptop stand, buy a wifi6E usb wifi adapter from aliexpress with antennas (take your pick of which design…large or small or cabled) and then take your pick of free router operating systems and put something together for a quarter of the cost. Not to mention the numerous advantages. The only downside is if you are not a technical person whatsoever. Youtube videos hold your hand doing this stuff nowadays, so there's almost no excuse.

The only thing you'll have to update is the usb wifi adapter in time… but everyone will be on wifi6 and 6e for a long while…even now, wifi5 is the most used setup at home.

Otherwise this Asus router internally is the same as the older RT-AX54 and so because of this would support Openwrt flashing.

Or just stretch budget slightly and buy this much better router which also supports Openwrt: Dynalink WiFi 6 AX3600 Router (DL-WRX36), Dual Band, 8-Stream , Wireless Speed Up to 3.6Gbps, MU-MIMO, 2.5G WAN & 4 Gigabit LAN Ports, for Home & Gaming (1 Pack) https://a.co/d/gKm54WU

    • Oh my goodness, you have literally just blown my mind. Thank you so much for sharing that. Amazing idea.

    • buy a wifi6E usb wifi adapter from aliexpress with antennas

Most of those are Realtek-based and I don't think their driver is in great shape yet. That's a no from me.

The others that come up in search are PCI-E Intel cards. Also useless for access points as Intel don't trust people and require scan results instead to determine what country it's in and channels allowable.

      Dynalink WiFi 6 AX3600 Router (DL-WRX36)

Value ends up a bit in the hole because of the shipping fee on that link. Would end up costing like ~$140, which would net you an AX6000 class device on Aliexpress. (Eg. the Redmi AX6000, if you could live without a 2.5gbit port)

Although if you stretch the budget further, you could end up getting something like a XDR-6088 (AX6000 with 2 2.5gbit ports) from China for like ~$165 delivered via the Taobao/TMall slow boat. (Which in theory supported OpenWrt at some point, god knows if that rooting method still works. Probably will cost you more via a Taobao agent if you don't read/speak Chinese or are more risk-averse.)

Or perhaps a local Mercusys MR90X for $170 (Amazon Warehouse used)/$199 (Amazon AU new), which has a single 2.5gbit port.

(This is in addition to the 4 port gigabit switch these all have.)

You can tell I've uhh, thought about this before.

(This is all in the context of already OpenWrt supported hardware)

      • There are plenty of intel adapters floating around. All adapters will work with alternative router software/aio router OS.

Many Xiaomi devices are difficult to flash. Including the other makes and models you mentioned.

Theres a lot of devil in the detail of all this 3rd party software support.

        • There are plenty of intel adapters floating around.

They're very jank in regards to 5ghz/6ghz transmit, and typically need at least one scan provided to it before it'll allow transmit. I don't think you can bring it up on multiple bands simultaneously either, so that's pretty annoying too.

Many Xiaomi devices are difficult to flash. Including the other makes and models you mentioned.

The Dynalink you mentioned is more or less in the same park sadly. In terms of new hardware, not a lot outside of GL-Inet will let you just simply sysupgrade directly to OpenWrt.

Yeah, some technical inclination is required if you go down this route.

  • How would this compare to the default ZTE modem from Superloop zte h1600? I've looked to compare specs and they both seem to be pree much identical unless I've missed something.

  • I can’t decide between this or paying a bit more for the ASUS RT-AX56U (on sale for $110) — but the 56U is EOL.

My main concern is running a VPN client (NordVPN) on this router. Will it be powerful enough? I also want some of that sweet wifi 6.

  • I got this router and it's been horrible, the internet has been horribly inconsistent with drop outs frequently, my computer at the back of the house doesn't pick up the modems signal unless I turn off Wifi 6
