I’ve used Energy Locals for some years, and had some dealings with them when they were starting out. Good people for an energy company, and they have generally been pretty on the ball with energy futures so you get competitive prices, especially if you want green energy.

Their model is to charge you a monthly fee to be a customer, then pass on the wholesale rates they can secure. For me, this is a better approach than Amber or similar who expose you directly to market pricing, as you don’t need to think too hard.

Agreed but don't be fooled by their low daily supply charge. It is made up for by their monthly membership charge.

      • Agreed. You need to have a good handle on your power bill to know if it is right.

    • Thanks for this feedback.

I just signed with them and at no stage was there a monthly fee spelled out. I think I’ll have to rethink my transfer as I use less than a kWh a day, not really worth it for me I dare say.

      • Not sure who has the lowest supply charge, which will be the deciding factor for you (my fridge, router and pcs add up to much more than 1kWh so I’ve never looked hard at the absolute minimum charge you will need).

It looked like this mob until the membership fee came to light. I was so thrown byy losing the supply charge concession I’ve dropped the ball with my due dilligence :/

@0jay: The membership fee is circa 30c a day, so the rebate might well cover it for 6 months anyway.

            • @mskeggs: True, it’s just that boosted fee for the first six before the ‘loyalty bonus’ kicks in

@0jay: Bird in the hand, and reassess in June? The fixed tariffs come out twice a year so its worth a look at the market every 6 months.
FWIW, I am petty sure wholesale generation prices will be lower (gas is the price setter, and now much lower than 6 or 12 months ago).
But I also think the connection charges will get nudged up again then, hidden by lower per kWh prices. So in your case, might be tricky.

@mskeggs: After a click, if seems they have an offer of 6 months free membership at my address (in NSW) so maybe the membership fee won’t apply for the first 6 months anyway.

Thank neo-liberalism for this nonsense of trying to game energy plans. When I was kid, everyone paid the same rate, it was easy, and if you used less power you paid less. Now it is a complex puzzle to work out your electricity bill!

I’ll call tomoz and see if I can nut this out, ta.

Preach. The SEC deal looked like we may be heading for a bit of sense and stability, I guess we’ll see.

If you used the referal system you begin with $50 credit, so I would stay with them and use it up, which is what I did. I then swtiched to OVO Energy which started with $120 credit. Make sure to use the referal system. Each referal gets you another $120 credit, applied as $10/month over the year. I've got 7 referals now, so $840 which is more than my yearly power bill.

Haha that’s how it’s done. I’ll take comfort from your example.

Don't be put off by the monthly charge.
I worked out the monthly cost on a spreadsheet and compared with Energy Locals when I switched. It was saving me over 30% a month. Gave them a go and have been impressed with them and the prices. Happily recommend them to anyone up here in QLD.

  • does qld get the 150$
