A few more well-regarded 'pretentious artsy garbage' films like Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (apparently) that seem to upset people on here for some reason.

If these are too difficult for you to comprehend, worry not, Kickass 2 on 4k is also on sale for you

      Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

  • One of the few Tarkovsky films I haven't seen yet, might pick it up. Thanks.

    • I'm in the odd position of having not seen any, so this will likely be my starting point

      • +1

I wouldn't recommend The Sacrifice as a starting point for Tarkovsky as it's pretty much in the deep end of slow cinema, so the pace of the film and poetic/elliptical storytelling may be really jarring (unless you're already a fan of slow cinema). I would personally first check out 1 or 2 of a few of his previous films. They're freely (and legally) available in decent quality with English subtitles on YouTube if you don't want to spend on the Criterion releases: Ivan's Childhood (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Lnb1bI0VIk and it's only 90 mins), Solaris (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8ZhQPaw4rE) and Stalker (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3hBLv-HLEc). My preference is to go through his filmography in chronological order.

        • +2

Generally speaking, slow cinema is my jam. I am a fan of the likes of Drive My Car, the work of Kore-Eda, Dersu Uzala, Hong Sangsoo, etc

          • +1

@Faro: πŸ‘it's a lot more non-narrative and elliptical than any of the films by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Hang Sangsoo so definitely keep that in your expectations. The pace is probably closer to Tsai Ming Liang or Apitchatpong Weerasethakul

that seem to upset people on here for some reason

I've given up trying to interact with anyone here because of stuff like this.

    • I may be wrong (I tend to be), but it seems people are more likely to vocalise (type on here I guess) statements that have little context or thought behind them, publicly, for no purpose over the last few years. It is reminding me more and more of Facebook each day.

  • A few more well-regarded 'pretentious artsy garbage' films

    Eh?

There's a linked comment for context πŸ‘

Seems if something makes you think or feel, it ain't for the majority of Ozbargainers. That would be okay if they didn't feel the need to publicly exclaim such a stance every time a deal such as this is shared

      • +2

Unfortunately, there are a lot of bogans on OzB. They also love the "DVD/Bluray look identical to 4K" and "who still buys physical media?" quips.

        • +3

They're my favourite. I love their strong opinions based on very specific and personal blind spots.

          • +1

@Faro: Literal blind spots, it seems.

        • Seems I've already upset a couple as the downvotes are coming in across the comment section. I understand words are sometimes difficult to formulate for these people

      • +2

I understand the frustration around this, but isn't this a public exclamation as well? I like these types of films and I would love it if more people did. I try to encourage people I know to watch some I think might open them up to a different set of expectations about what a movie should provide to the viewer, but I haven't found shaming them to be an effective strategy and I doubt they like it any more than I like the kinds of comments you're complaining about (which I also have received many times). The more anything turns into an us-versus-them argument the more entrenched people get in their beliefs. I think the solution is just to put what you like out there like you did by posting this deal. If even one person enjoys the movie that matters a lot more than someone sharing a strong negative opinion, just my 10c.

        • -1

That's how I thought initially. Then this site wore me down. Now I pre-emptively criticise to dissuade people like that from bringing their nonsense here. It's a defense mechanism that serves me for now

  • Merged from The Quiet Girl (Blu-Ray) - $15.28 - + Delivery ($0 with Prime/ $59 Spend) @ Amazon AU via UK

One of the highest rated movies of last year that did the rounds on the Film Festival circuit. I missed it last year, so am keen to see it once my copy arrives. Decent discount considering recency, reception and being an import.

I believe this is also mostly in the traditional Irish language. One of the only films to ever utilise this on screen.

    • this movie absolutely slayed me.

    • +1

One of the recent movies I loved. Excellent acting, editing, visuals. Enjoy it when you get round to it OP.

      • Is it drama or mystery? It looks good

        • More of a slower-paced drama.

      • +1

I hope I will! Was regretting not seeing it in theatres and dreaded the Blu-ray would forever hold that ~$30-40 price tag

      • +1

Because this post has been merged, I was referring to 'The Quiet Girl'.

  • Are these worth buying not seen any of these

Tarkovsky is the greatest film director to ever live for my money, but I haven't seen this one yet.

      can't help sorry lol.
