Any reason you'd pay a premium for this band? can get other reputable brand smart plugs with power meter for around $20.

A fair chance they’d be smaller too. This one will 100% block the second outlet on a wall plate.

Link one with HomeKit and Thread/Matter support?

    • Having a look almost all available are wifi plugs, this uses Thread instead. There are some arguable benefits but might not matter to many/most.

      • Because power consumption is not an issue so wifi is the sensible option. Thread is just a fancy layer added on top of clutering non wifi smart stuff, don't get sucked into it just yet.

        • Usually the wifi used in such devices is n (2-3 generations behind). I also often have problems with intermittent connections.

Having these problems constantly with Meross lights and LIFX lights. It’s not all the time, but it’s frustrating enough that I wouldn’t rely on it.

Philips Hue has been amazing (uses Zigbee) and the connection has never been an issue. It’s just expensive.

Z-wave works well too, but its dependent on the hub.

Haven’t tried matter / thread so can’t comment on that, but given thread is similar to Zigbee in implementation, I would trust this far more than Wifi.

          • @ozbking: Have these and nanoleaf essentials matter/thread bulbs. Unsure on ZigBee but on the whole thread has been a disappointment.

That apple border routers and google Nest make different thread networks and even between several nests can have multiple separate networks for subgroups of them with devices dropping out and changing networks interrupting connectivity is annoying.

It promises interoperability but that is a work in progress for sure

The ones I've linked here do not send your info back to wherever, and run perfectly using HomeKit

    https://www.athom.tech/blank-1/esphome-au-plug

    • That only says they work with Home Assistant and not HomeKit.

The meross brand on Amazon had a 2 pack of their HomeKit plugs down to $36~ for Black Friday which might be some of the cheapest native HomeKit plugs you can get. They are a bit chunky though and they overlap the next plug which stopped me from buying them.

    • Have you ordered from there before? Do you know what shipping times are like from sydney vs china? They say in some instances its faster to order from china than sydney

    • I previously bought 4 Cygnett one from BigW for $5 a piece when it was on sale, works with homekit. It has been used for my pool pump for several years. Makes it easy for me to change pump schedule.

    • Seconding Athom plugs. They run Tasmota out of the box. So you are totally free to configure it however you want.

I have configured one of mine on my bathroom fan. It switches on when the fan switch is turned on, and automatically switches off after 30mins. Totally autonomous doesn't need to be connected to wifi or anything after the initial setup. Been running fine like that all year.

Every other "smart plug" cant do that one simple task. Its crazy. They can only do it on a schedule, so it has to always start at a particular time. I'm not that regular lol.

I find the Tapo P110's great value and easy to use. Plus they are slim and don't block the second slot https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/812275

    • Tapo do however share your information online, Athom do not.

The only real benefit of these plugs is the Matter support if you need it, But in saying that I purchased one during black Friday worked a treat via HomeKit then did the Matter update and the plug kept dropping the connection and became a useless paperweight, eve support wasn't great to deal with either. Would avoid, I have a bunch of TP link smart plugs that I have integrated into HomeKit using HomeBridge and they are rock solid!

Yeah bit of a warning with this. AFAIK to upgrade them to Matter, you need Apple Homekit to do it. So if you want to use it as a Matter device with hubs that support Matter (other than HomeKit). Then best get a device that has Matter out of the box.

      • Yes, this. The plug comes in two versions: Homekit and Matter. Only the Homekit version is on special (at the above link), the Matter version is still full price.

To expand on @emblurr's useful warning, both versions can do Matter, but only the Matter version comes pre-configured to do so. For the Homekit version, you need to first connect to Homekit, then upgrade the firmware if you want Matter support. So if you have an Apple Homekit network, that's fine, but if you're hoping to use this with other (non-Apple) Thread networks, then you either need to first find a friend with Homekit, go get the (pre-configured) Matter version instead.

        Some notes:

In order to update an Eve device from HomeKit to Matter, you have to use the Eve app for HomeKit.

Please note: Once you've upgraded your device to Matter, you can't migrate it back to HomeKit.

Such a dumb design. Blocks the plug over.

  • I have a few of these. Unlike the Belkin Smart Plug with Thread, these work rock solid and seldom drop out or 'Not Responding' on me. I cant speak for how they work on the Matter Application Layer (Matter over Thread) because I use them on Homekit (Homekit over Thread)

I agree that the design is silly and it blocks the second plug but it is what it is

  • i love how the mental giant who designed these thought - you know what - lets design a plug (that we call a smart plug) in such a way that it blocks access to adjacent plugs.
