MSI Modern 14 Gaming Laptop: AMD Ryzen 5 7530U, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD, 14" FHD IPS $599 Shipped @ Costco (Membership Required)

170

Looks to be a good price for this laptop - but from what I can find the 8gb RAM is soldered onboard so you can't upgrade it. If anyone can confirm otherwise, please leave a comment and I'll update the post. It could still be a good deal for some basic use cases.

Note: they call it a "gaming laptop" but being a Zen 3 / Vega 7 based APU, don't expect too much.

How is this a gaming laptop lol. Integrated gfx and weak cpu

    • +1

Yeah, no idea why they’re marketing it like that.

      There - updated title lol

      • It's Costco and only Costco that label it as a 'gaming laptop'

Whoever created the Costco product listing read MSI and immediately thought, 'oh, must be a gaming laptop then'

How is this a weak CPU?

    • Shouldn't be allowed to call this a gaming laptop.

    • You hock it at Cash Converters and then play the games at Crown.

    • Solitaire and mine sweeper.

Bargain for the specs if can live with 8gb

  • For extra $30 (when you consider gc cashback) would have much preferred this recent deal for build quality.

Well when you factor in the price of a time machine I'm sure this would be better deal

      • +3

Haha i was just updating my post to say "no i dont have a time machine") but you beat me to it… really wish i had a time machine lol

Just saying don't settle for less

The CPU is power efficient, but to only put a 39wH battery in a 14" laptop is really cutting corners. The OP comments regarding gaming would only relate to AAA games at the highest settings. No issues with older games and E Sports titles with lower settings. Refer to the YouTube video with 15 games demonstrated on the 7530u.For example GTAV is approx 60FPS at 1080p Normal settings.

This really just isn't a gaming laptop at all. You'll run it out of memory.

2gb of vram, 2gb of ram, 4gb for Windows just isn't enough for most games beyond anything very old.

      • +2

I didn't call it a gaming laptop. Just stating that the iGPU is capable of playing certain titles, at lower settings, and it's not a complete slideshow as verified by the video.

        • complete "slideshow"…

          vs

          don't expect too much

Not the same thing, but ok. It will provide some usable gaming performance in some games, just don't expect too much.

BTW, For anyone following this thread for gaming capability - you will not get the same performance as in the video linked above. In every game in that video, more than 8gb RAM was in use (except Valorant). It could be close - it could be far - it's very unlikely to match what a 16gb Windows machine can produce.

        • Very fine difference between "gaming laptop" vs "a laptop that can play GTA V".

Also even if a i/dgpu has enough computational power to hit a given fps, if it runs out of video or system ram and has to page stuff out it absolutely will turn into a slideshow.

Even with a game as old as GTA I expect ~4gb for combined game+vram will be hugely inadequate. The video is somewhat encouraging that it's only using about 9gb-10gb of ram, however I expect they may have been running nothing in the background (discord, browser, etc) as it was a test rig.

  • How would this be as a student laptop?

    • I don't think students can live without gaming.

Battery is a bit on the small side, otherwise would be a good option for the price.

    • I was going to buy one of these but went an eBay refurb instead because of battery concerns. You'd need a power bank of say

      • Any tips on making sure your refurb is of a decent battery too? I'm also in the market

This link shows a prior gen model of the and the Memory is in fact expandable, cannot find out if that applies to this model though.

I agree, confirmation of being able to upgrade to 16Gb is the most important factor as to whether or not this is a good buy.

    • According to this reviewer in the comments it only has single ram chip and it's soldered/non upgradeable

      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uL5Ss75f2Oo

      • The difference is that the prior review actually removed the cover. There is no easy access slot, you have to take the whole panel off. Once removed there were two dimms installed.

That definitely doesn't prove they kept that feature for the upgrade. But I'd like more than a comment on a silent video personally.
