my lawns never gonna be worth that much….

Genuinely curious to hear peoples opinions as to why someone would spend that much on a mower when there are honda's and equivalent that have similar decks at a third the cost. I assume the engines are more reliable and I assume the gearbox with self propelled is something but like at that cost, wouldn't you want to invest in a robot or a ride on perhaps?

I picked up a 2 stroke Victa statesman for $75 on marketplace that has been bulletproof (I'm a sucker for a 2banger so had to get one) and no hate to the post or anyone that buys mowers at this cost, just want to know what you'd get for your money compared to cheaper hondas.

Exactly. Im still trying to work out why people buy food when i just eat my own boogers and its perfectly fine.

Damn. Thank you. The money I'm going to save now! This deserves to be an ozbargain membership platinum tip.

This video touches on it around the 8:30 min mark.

FWIW I have a HRX 217 (the model which they don't like as much in the video above 😂) which is also not cheap, and there are other little differences compared to the cheaper models too - ie, engine and blade brake are independant (on the cheaper Hondas when you let go of the handle to stop the blades, it kills the engine - on the higher range models the engine keeps running and only the blade stops).

      • That sounds like a whole lot of maintenance waiting to happen !

The HRU range are commercial mowers, nothing like cheap mowers. They're a tool and are made to work day in day out, racking up thousands of hours of use from contractors. The GXV160 engine is also bulletproof, cast iron sleeved cylinders unlike alloy cylinders on cheaper engines. They're a tool built for a purpose and will go forever.

    • I should add…. ~$1700 for a premium model is still relatively cheap in the world of mowers.

Once you shift from rotary to cylinders mowers, the price skyrockets.

eg. something like this to maintain a low cut golf green look:

I had one for 25 years before it finally died.

No other mower I've tried has come close to how well it cuts.

This is a contractors mower with a strong engine that will last the long haul, and they do a beautiful cut. Great mower but too bloody heavy and personally I still prefer my HRU196 push mower, also heavy but not as much as this. But I keep an eye out for second hand Honda’s and would add one as the extra 2” and self propelled would be useful for some jobs.

  • Not for me either, but… if you bother to click on the link to read the description of the mower you will understand why it is expensive. It's a bloody Rolls Royce!

Just a 7% discount is hardly a bargain these days

    • Today only , you can have it for RRP

  • OP - any deals on Stihl/Echo blowers/whipper snippers & chainsaws?

  • +1

this honda is probably more expensive than my 99, 320k kms honda hrv :)

on the postive note, i believe this lawnmower will outlive most lawnmowers out there just like my hrv

    53 kg… it's heavy

Is this for people who bought a Type R for $73000?

  • +1

I'm a contractor and while this is a good mower cant stand the blade brake worse thing they ever did was put that on the hru216. So I buy the China knock offs for about 1100 with Honda motor but no blade brake.

    • Yes blade brake is annoying. I got a HRU196 off Gumtree for $250, it's about 20 years old but none of that stuff. Built like a tank and never misses a beat.

  • I bought the HRU216 M2 in 2014 for $1550.
I have an acre block on a slope too steep for the JD D130. I haven't had any issues to date with this thing, starts first time, cuts nice 3 speed gb is solid.
my only complaint would be the rear discharge gets blocks with long thick wet grass and if you hit a stick on the govenor the rpms drop/increase (not super protected).
so almost 10 years no issues, buy once cry once

  • I have heard Honda has now stopped production of petrol lawn mowers.
