  • Just picked this to upgrade my home server running Windows + DrivePool + USB drives. These also have upgradable CPU's, I also have the 10500T version which I've upgraded to a 10700 full desktop CPU.

    • Hi AU1,

Interesting to know you can upgrade the CPU, is this machine uses normal size intel CPU? How do I know what CPU I can upgrate to on this motherboard?

      • +1

Generally any 9th gen Intel CPU would be fine though as it’s a 9500T you’d go with an i5 non-T version or above to get the boost in power. Note you may need to buy a bigger power brick depending on which CPU you go with, and make sure the bios is updated if you’re changing cpu.

        • +1

I have read a lot of the reviews on servethehome, where they suggest the non-T processors get a bit hot in these micro PCs. it think this was on 8th gen though, not sure if the later gen cpus run cooler. do you find your 10700 to get a bit hot & noisy? i have a 7060 with a 8500T (which i am totally happy with) and was thinking that the most logical upgrade path would be to go to the T version of the i7 (i.e. which would be the 8700T for my 7060) to get double the threads - 8th gen i5 doesn't have hyperthreading, probably the same with 9th gen. interested in your thoughts on this. also, where is the best place to shop for cpus? 2nd hand ones on ebay?

          • +1

@sclyde2: I got my cpu from the cheapest eBay seller I could find. I use it for WFH so nothing to stressful but the fan does boost more then the T but nothing crazy. It is much more zippy with Teams, Excel, etc. I’m not across any benefits with hyper threading but the cpu change does boost the performance.

Make sure you have thermal paste too.

  • Hey. Does anyone know if I can put the Chrome OS on this? that's what my kids use at school. If I can, is it hard? :)

  • +2

Make sure that they send you the right power supply. I bought an 8500T from another ebay seller (Technology Locker) and they sent me a power supply with an adaptor to change the connector size, and as a consequence the CPU would be throttled to 800MHz because the system couldn't detect the wattage of the power brick. You get an error at boot time when this is the case.

    • +1

Yep, good callout. This PC (with the 9500T CPU) requires either the 90w or 130w adaptor). You will get the boot time error with the 65w adaptor.

This PC will also run the non "T" CPUs but these require more power so I'm pretty sure you need the 130w power brick for those.

  • Expired? I can't use t he code

    • 6 year older system (processor is 4th Gen Intel - Q2-2013 rel) vs the I5-9500T in the Dell (9th Gen Intel - rel Q2-2019).

Can it run Windows 10 (Yes), Are 10 year old parts going to last long (think Fans and Power Supplies) - Maybe.

If you're going to chuck it in < 2 yrs or have experience in replacing those things in a PC it's OK but I wouldn't choose it over this Dell.

If you want to do an Apples to Apples comparison. Compare the Dell in the listing against this HP (also from same seller):

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204364902091?hash=item2f9518eecb…

  • Thanks OP.

Purschased on for the missus for her work desk

  • Can I attach an external hard drive to this and use it as a NAS?

    • Yes. It'll be USB speeds but can be used that way.

    • Yes, as can any Windows workstation.

    • Yep I have mine connected with a dual external docking bay to run Plex and it works just fine.

  • Damn, paid similar for an 8500T not long ago. I don't think the 9500T is that much better, but still

  • +2

    No HDMI

I wish they'd reverse the trend of going to displayport.

    • Yeah I got lucky with my 7060 and it I included an optional HDMI port

    • But HMDI is designed for AV applications, DP is specifically designed for graphics cards and monitors.

So it is correct to have DP on PCs, it is wrong for monitors to have HDMI but not DP.

Anyway, a DP to HDMI cable is relatively affordable, such as this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0863THGK3

      • Why? Why is one for AV and one for PC?

HDMI especially 2.1, is basically equivalent or better than displayport in every way.

        • +2

Not that I've looked into it much, but I didn't think HDMI could do the higher display rates that DisplayPort could?

        • Why? Why is one for AV and one for PC?

Because HDMI ports cost money - a vendor needs to pay a licence charge to include HDMI.

Display Port has no such fees.

HDMI especially 2.1, is basically equivalent or better than displayport in every way.

What ? The opposite is true.

HDMI 2.1 maxes out at 48Gb, Display Port 2.0 can carry 80Gb.

When your laptop is combining USB and Thunderbolt and Power and Video and Audio through the single USB C port all at the same time, it's driving the video with Display Port, because it's built to co-exist with the other parts of the signal.

        • There are lots of technicalities, some I don't understand.

DP is not just about the physical connector, but the interface protocol, most recent laptops use DP internally, DP works with USB-C for video and power delivery. HDMI can't do.

HDMI is designed for AV use cases: i.e. a single TV setup. Can't connect 2 TVs to a PC/laptop with 1 video output.

DP is designed for computing use cases: i.e. multiple monitor setup. You can daisy chain DP MST monitors to 1 video output, up to 4 monitors to a single video source.

All these may not mean anything to average Joes, HMDI and DP are designed specifically for different applications, horses for courses.

    • That's pretty important information, I use my TV as a computer monitor.

      • +4

It costs $10 https://www.amazon.com.au/Wavlink-Display-Adapter-MacOS-Wind… to convert Display Port to HDMI, I have no idea why this crops up again and again in every. refurb. deal.

Buy the adaptor, use your TV as your computer monitor. You don't need an HDMI output.

      • This is all driven by the integrated graphics which is Intel UHD 630 and this is the maximum resolution and refresh rate that can be done by that:
        Intel UHD 630 Graphics
        Supports maximum resolution
        DP: 4096 x 2304 @60 Hz, 24 bpp Option
        DP: 4096 x 2304 @60 Hz Option
        USB type-C Alt mode: 4096 x 2304 @60 Hz
        Option VGA: 1920 x 1200 @60 Hz
        Option HDMI2.0: 4096 x 2160 @60 Hz
Number of display supported Up to three displays supported

As every 4K TV is 3840x2160 resolution doesn't matter whether DP or HDMI is driving it. Refresh rate is also 60 Hz for both so again no difference if connecting to a TV.

HDMI 2.1 irrelavent here as the Intel UHD 630 is HDMI 2.0.

  • what can you use the USB C for in the front?

is it only 2 DP ports out for display?

    • 2 DP guaranteed, they are on the MB. There's an expansion for a third one, it may or may not be there.

You can use the front USB-C port for lots of things, i.e. keyboard, mouse, webcam, or charger (probably not very good at that, i.e. slow).

      • no expansion that I can see

ya just don't see that USB C to be powerful enough to do certain things

  • OP, do you have anything with additional space for hard drive to be used as nas?

    • +1

This may have the additional tray to fit another 2.5 inch HDD. Confirm with the OP.

  • I bought the Optiplex 7060 from you guys a few months ago for way more $ and it's been a solid proxmox workhorse.

Could not say no to this bargain though. Bought!

  • Can this run runescape at 1080p?

  • +1

    Buy first. Ask questions later.

    I am currently running
    a) HA, zigbee2mqtt, and Cloudflare tunnels in docker on a Pi.
    b) Plex on ubuntu in a laptop
    c) influxdb, grafana as containers in the laptop

I am looking to move all these onto the optiplex and probably play around a bit with proxmox.

    1) How do people generally split workloads in proxmox? Each service for (HA, zigbee2mqtt grafana/influxdb, Plex, etc) in its own VM or run VMs for some and a single VM with docker containers for most services?
    2) Can Plex still transcode 4K (one stream only) if running in proxmox?
    3) I use a cc2531 USB dongle with zigbee2mqtt - Will it be able to passthrough via proxmox

    • I have a similar setup, had hass/grafana etc running on pis and ported them over to proxmox on the optiplex once hass outgrew the pi.

      1)
HA got its own VM to run homeassistant OS, 2gb RAM is juuust enough.
Docker got its own debian VM, I run all the various docker containers in there.
      pi-hole got a container.
Made a debian jump host VM to run a persistent console for remote access, ended up installing X and steam on it to serve the steam link on my TV for fun.
Need to cook up a windows VM at some point for fun.
Have other containers for other services too.

I tried to preference containers over VMs at the start to keep things lightweight and reduce RAM reservations, can't remember if/what problems I had with docker on containers but ended up doing a VM for it. Probably was for isolation purposes in the end.

Kept one pi as a secondary pihole if I have to reboot this optiplex.

      2) no idea, don't run plex, but you can dedicate enough CPU cores and memory.

      3) yes you can pass through USB devices, I haven't had to do it yet on mine.

        Found this last night: https://smarthomescene.com/guides/how-to-install-home-assist…

        https://smarthomescene.com/guides/how-to-separate-zigbee2mqt…

        Seems like a reasonable approach.

Any benefits to using Hass OS instead of running as a container? I won't use zigbee2mqtt and mosquitto as add-ons and will run them as separate containers.

        • That is a very good guide, running those services as separate containers looks pretty good. I ported my hass directly from my pi so some of those services are still running as home assistant plugins for me.

Running hass os means you get OS updates handled directly within the home assistant updater. Makes it a little easier, one less OS to manually keep up to date.

  • Does the wifi come from the manufacturer of you send out the wifi dongle separately?

    • separately

    • WiFi is build in, but my friend received a WiFi dongle because the antenna is missing.

I gave him a spare antenna from a decommissioned router, Wi-Fi works just fine. Now he has a spare Wi-Fi dongle.

These machines have been a better option than a Raspberry Pi for years now, as for the lack of HDMI, you can get Display to HDMI downgrade cables for cheap on Amazon.

Note that Display to HDMI downgrade cable is single direction as Display can be downgraded to HDMI without hardware, but not upgraded to Display Port.

  • +1

got any more of them… surface pro 5 deals?

  • -5

I'm doubting whether these were in stock. I paid and have an Australia Post tracking reference which indicates that it hasn't even been scanned into the system. Shouldn't take two weeks for something to get shipped an hour down the road. Hmmm

    • +1
      1. This deal was only posted 2 business days ago.

      2. It's December, it absolutely can take two weeks to ship something down the road.

      3. A delay in your single order makes you think they didn't have stock for any of the other gazillion buyers in this thread ? That is bonkers thinking my man 😁

    • +5

These have all been shipped. Patience my young padawan.

  • Hi All, what condition did your PC arrive? mine was totally unclean lots of dust and some oily sticky stuff outside.

    • Mine was fine. Although they sent me the wrong power lead (IEC vs clover). Yet to raise that with them though.

    • Mine looks fine mostly and does have some stickiness at the front ventilation grill but I believe it might just be residue from a peeled off asset barcode sticker? The outside appearance looks dust free, but I haven't checked the inside condition yet.

    • Mine is very clean with a tiny amount of sticker residue which rubbed off and now looks neat.

It has a single memory module, 2230 sized SSD and Dell 90w power brick.

    • Same with AU1, little sticker residue on the outside, otherwise no scratches or dents

Bit dusty inside, 1 RAM stick, 2230 size drive, but you are able to install a 2280 size drive if needed.

      90w powerbrick as well.

Going to be used mainly for web browsing and email by my mother, and is currently using a then mid level Acer 15 year old laptop connected to a monitor and using a wireless keyboard and mouse. Be a nice upgrade for her.

    • I bought the 7060 on the last deal and found it to be a bit dusty inside, along with some sticky residue on the grill that was difficult to remove. The remaining drive life according to HWINF064 was 93%, which is okay. However, when I bought a 9020SFF on a deal posted here a few years ago, it had 98% drive life remaining and was spotless inside.
It's all about luck of the draw with secondhand items.

    • +1

Clean neat and tidy. Single dimm 16gb. Tiny M2 memory card. Tiny amount of dust in the fan inside easy to wipe off. Three DP ports (daughter card added) so WFH ready for three monitors. Wifi antenna included. Sometimes these have slightly scratched faces around the USB port (drongos coming to work with phones on 5% plugged in blind) but this one is spotless.

      Very happy.

    • Mine came super clean and hardly any dust but there was a dint in the corner of the chassis.

Plugged it in and wouldn't boot. Just stuck flashing orange/amber lights that don't correlate to the service manual because it doesn't flash any white lights.

Currently waiting on a reply from eBay messaging. I wonder if there's a better way to communicate? @Calmago
