After years of struggling with cheap soldering irons I finally upgraded to the TS101. I discovered I actually can solder properly with half decent equipment. Thank me later.

Yep. Buy once cry once. I learned the hard way too.

Straight to mains type soldering irons like this have saved my bacon a few times for strip light repairs on site. These days I just have a Hakko FX888D in ute for emergency repairs on site.

    • ts101

What are you using for a stand?

      • +6

I call him mate, buddy or come here son. Mainly automotive soldering in the car so never need a stand.

    • What's a good price/ place for one thanks for the recommendation.

    • I love the TS101 other than tips cost over $20 a pop. My original one didn't last very long and solder no longer sticks to it.

      • what tips do you recommend for automotive or household?

        • automotive

If you’re just taking securing twisted cables, you could also just use those heatable waterproof seals, has a core of solder in middle of a heat shrink tube with stoppers. Heat to approx 300d and bam, no fuss, secure n watertight seal

For a laugh, I grabbed a cheapie little Soldering Iron Pen with built in battery. It's similar in size to my TS101 but without the accurate controls. It actually works surprisingly well for on the fly micro jobs. Dont need to worry about power. Not bad for the on AU$12 I paid when on special.

      • Nice! Just got one. Thanks! :)

          $9.31 Here.

Mine only came with a single tip (pointy one) regardless of it saying it has three. I suspect they only incl the one based on the pics in the reviews. Same as mine! I complained (not as advertised) and Aliexpress refunded US$3.50 :-)

You can grab the others for a couple of dollars. I believe are like these these ones.

Recommended: Look for items with the Aliexpress "Choice" logo as faster shipping and usually free.

Yet to order a couple myself. The pointy one does what I need for now ….Motherboard, ESP32 type of devices etc.

      • Oh damn I might order one just for lols too

    • cant argue with that, I got the pinecil and its insane how much better it is than my 20yr old Weber

Anything would be an improvement over using a 30yo BBQ to solder.

        • +1

LOL wow… brain fart.. Weller even. Got BBQs on the mind i guess

    • Agree my mate! These cheapo sodering sticks can't even melt the candle!

    • is this $4.95 a half decent equipment then? asking from a newbie

  • +1

The 4 pack of butane gasmate branded are 4.95 at bunnings too. This maybe alot easier pending location

    • It's normally 6 bucks at Bunnings so they're price matching (like they do with Aldi Xfinity).

Looks like the website can't handle a few clicks, it won't load anymore.

I have the current leaflet for the sale (yep, letterbox). But also, they keep discontinued product pages and link to the replacement item.
      Seems a tad inefficient.

      Says down for maintenance now.

        OzB broke Jaycar's website.

  • Yeah I'm interested on any feedback about the RC buggy too? I was going to purchase it yesterday but thought there might be better deals out there around the $100 mark?

    • +1

Express lane to landfill. Parts will be the main issue. Plastics aren't ABS and the dogbones will snap, separate or simply fall out, guaranteed.

I believe you either go really cheap (under $50) with this stuff, or spend for decent stuff like Tamiya. A Grasshopper is around $100 but you'll need to spend at least that again for ESC, radio and battery.

Here's a similar RWD truck to the $79 one. There's a video running on indoor/outdoor concrete:
      https://www.jaycar.com.au/1-12-scale-red-racing-truggy-2-4gh…

      It was replaced with this:
      https://www.jaycar.com.au/1-12-r-c-high-speed-buggy/p/GT4255

That was replaced with the GT4257 you asked about. Main diff is the transmitter and Li-Poly battery instead of Li-ion.

  • website has been ozbargained.. unable to open it

  • That drone…in the video they show example "1080p" camera footage. That's 360p upscaled, if that.
