    RIP JR Pass

  • +1

FYI if you have a JR Pass you can get discounted tickets on the Nozomi/Mizuho lines and it's cheaper than Klook even with the 20% off.

    • @clear can you please elaborate more?

      • +1

        What part isn't clear?

        • -1

          Definitely not your username

  • How does the JR Pass work with these guys? They send us the pass token, but we cant pre-book actual tickets (and seats) until we arrive in Japan and receive the real Pass?

    • You'll need to check which discount is the best for you, either use the one with JR pass or the one with Klook unfortunately.
JR pass is all very "manual" process. Once u get to Japan u exchange your token at the office with a little booklet that is your physical pass. To book your seat you can only do it at a travel service center at the station, not online. They will stamp the booklet for each booking. Automatic gates dont work either, you'll be required to show your booklet with the stamp to the station man at each gate to get in and get out.

      • Sounds like a pain in the arse…..I can book tickets a month in advance online without the Pass. Marginally more expensive from what I can tell.

      • +1

That's not how it works anymore. At the airport or JR office you exchange the token for a reusable train ticket. To book seat reservations you can scan the QR code at the ticket machine or go into the JR office to have them book. To enter and exit the gates you insert your ticket.

        • Sounds fairly similar

          • @specwarop: In the old system you had a book and you had to line up to the manned gate to show the pass. In busy stations like Tokyo or Shin-Osaka there could be 50 people ahead of you. By having a ticket I can just insert it into the gate, no different to tapping an IC card on the local lines or how you do it in Sydney/Melbourne.

Seat reservations aren't required on all lines either. If you do want to reserve a seat it takes like 2 minutes on the machine.

I'm not sure how much simpler they can make it.

            • @Clear: The key for me is booking the seats in advance. I dont like the idea of missing out on seats with 2 young kids during busy Mar/Apr.

              • @specwarop: When you arrive at a JR station you can book all your seats in advance for any line. It doesn't have to be on the day and if it was on the day the seats are likely to be booked out on busy lines.

                • @Clear: If thats the case, the best I can achieve is maybe 7 days in advance. Not sure if thats early enough?

                  • @specwarop: That's enough. I believe if a JR pass is purchased on the official JR website it'll be tied to your online account and you can book there.

Of course that'll depend if the JR pass is going to be good value. I'm currently visiting 10 cities in Japan so it is for me even after the change. Plus it has let me skip queues in some big Kyoto temples.

                    • @Clear: Is there a discount currently on the official JR website?

                      • @specwarop: No. In a previous deal there was discussion about how the 5% off from Klook isn't really 5% once you factor in shipping or processing fees - I can't remember.

  • Perfect timing - I was literally about to buy Disneyland tickets.

  • +4

Just a quick reminder the JR pass had a 65-77% price increase as at 1 October 2023. The standard 7 day pass was 29,650yen and it's now 50,000yen. Just do your due diligence before taking up this deal as it may not be worth it anymore.

The regional passes have had a smaller price increase between 5-50%.

  • Perfect, thank you!!!

:( anything applicable for me going in April?

    • +1

yeah looks like disneyland tickets can only purchase max 2 months in advance on klook. I'm going in March

  • can people create multiple klook account since this is only one per customer coupon

  • Just be careful I have charged international transaction fee by bank even if I paid in AUD.
Tickets that I bought shipped from HK and USD on the tickets.

    • LinkedIn did this to me too.

To do with their payment processing before offshored I think.

  • Could have done with the discount a few days ago. That being said, trains are packed this weekend so trying to get reservations was a challenge for 2+ ppl sitting together between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Sometimes, a discount just isnt worth it.

And the JR price jack - just work around it. Unless you're travelling the length of the country, you really need to do you sums re JR Pass vs single sections + local trains

  • thanks op!

  • Thanks OP booked at 23:59 ahaha
