This will be my card of choice: Virgin Money Velocity Flyer - 90k points with $64 fee
Same deal as this, now valid until 10-01-24

    • Yeah, I may apply for this one for an easy 90k.

I will wait till there's confirmation.

    • +1

the bonus is 60k points ain't it? how do you get 90k?

Edit: Got it, 60k from the card original offer itself, then the 30k on top from this post's deal.

    • Is the idea to cancel this card after the first year? I don't actually want a second card long term

      • +5

Nope, you cancel it before the first year is over.

        • If you cancel it before the first year ends, do you still need to pay the $64 annual fee?

          • +1

@MelbBoy: The annual fee is paid at the start of the year, not the end.

            • @Mugsy: Thanks for the quick response!

    • +1

I just need to check what will count towards the $1500/mth spend. Last time I had the Virgin Flyer card, government payments (rates, etc) did not count and they make up most of my spend.

The ever trusty Amex Velocity Platinum card is my other choice since it's $3k spend over 3 months but 90k points seems too little for the annual fee (even if it does come with a complimentary domestic return flight).

      • +1

You could probably just buy gift cards, and then resell them on here for the exact same price.

        • +2

Cheers for the strategy. Will double check footnote 10 on the Virgin Flyer webpage and apply if it's all OK.

EDIT: Footnote 10 on eligible transactions for anyone wanting it…

Velocity membership Terms and Conditions, apply. Velocity Points are earned on Eligible Transactions only. Eligible Transaction means any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs). See Velocity Rewards Program for High Flyer and Flyer Cardholders Terms and Conditions for full details and definition

Even bpay payments are excluded! It's basically just $200 worth of monthly direct debit electricity bills and gym fees that I can put towards this. The Mrs and I are planning on getting new phones though which might save me from buying over $1k worth of Woolies gift cards.

          • @Mugsy: I currently buy Woolworths vouchers via BUPA to get 4% off. Wouldn’t this be eligible for the minimum spend. Basically frontload a couple of months of grocery expenses?

            • @Jokerchris2000: From the above terms, looks like eligible. Could lie under this though > Special Promotions. Discounted GC coul dbe a promotional item lol

            • @Jokerchris2000: Yeah, I had this thought but my discount vouchers would be from Macquarie Bank which doesn't seem to allow me to use another financial institution's card.

I'll need to log into my wife's BUPA account… which hopefully she hasn't been locked out of in any way.

            • +1

@Jokerchris2000: I had the Virgin Money Flyer card earlier this year and could purchase egift cards (woolworths, prezee, shopback or the online coles platform etc) which counted towards the purchase amount to get bonus points. Took a little while to receive in the mail but once it was activated was super easy to use and get the bonus points (+ the status credits bonus that was offered previously). Also don't forget to request the travel credit to your Velocity travel bank before cancelling the card.

              • @Dolapsap: Thanks .
Roughly how long did it take from the $1500 monthly spend to getting the 30k points

                • +1

@SydOzber: The bonus points are issued when the statement gets sent out.

                • @SydOzber: Sorry don’t check my messages often. I had a different offer earlier this year (chose 250 status credits on top of usual sign up bonus of 25K pts/mth for $1500 spend/mth for first 4 mths). The bonus was credited at the end of the first month the first 25K VFF pts were credited.
So whatever the terms are will be when the bonus points come.

              • +1

@Dolapsap: Thank you. Purchased $1250 worth of gift cards from prezzee and shopback + AGL payment via PayPal.
                $250 more to go.

Unfortunately my zip pay has $1000 limit due to which there’s a payment processing fee of $2.5 per bill payment which I’d like to avoid if possible.

Anyone has any idea if AGL payment via payment would count towards the min spend ?

                • @SydOzber: That fee isnt there anymore, they wiped it a few months ago

          • +3

@Mugsy: Just pay BPAY payments through Zippay to make them eligible. Additionally, pay or prepay some tax using Zippay (if you owe anything etc).

            • @JohnSy: Will give zippay a try… never used it before and never looked into it.

And yeah, I have a feeling I own the tax man something… though, my tax return is no where near done… or started.

Though, the Mrs and I are looking into getting new phones which I'm sure will get us over the line with these points if the purchases are timed well.

            • +1

@JohnSy: Hey mate, could you please confirm you received the bonus points by paying Govt bills(council, ASIC etc) via Zip Pay ?

      • +1

I pay my rates and rego with Zip for zero transaction fees, and then pay off my Zip with points card.

    • Isn’t this a better deal ?

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/809762

      • +3

Not an eligible card. Doesn't earn VFF points directly.

        • Thanks for pointing it out. Also realised it’s an inferior point/$ proposition compared to one shared above by OP. My bad

      • Flybuys are generally converted 2:1 with velocity so not great.

    • -1

not really one for churners with the dribble out of the points

      • +2

I don't understand the lingo 'dribble out of the points' or why is this not good for churners? Can you please explain?

    • +1

If I've had this card before (more than 12mths) am I eligible? And what is virgin money like with a card churner returning?

    • Should you keep the card open until you receive the bonus 30k or close after gaining the 60k from the card bonus?

    • +4

For anyone applying for this card, if you hold off on uploading employment/income proof, they'll give you a call and offer you 5k additional points for providing documentation within 24 hours of the call.

A friend applied as recently as yesterday (Wednesday) at 6pm and got a call today at around 12:30pm.

      Original comment here

    • How does that compare to the high flyer card (80k points), higher earn (1pt /$1 spend) and complimentary travel insurance?

Can anyone shed some light on if the travel insurance is really something to rely on? i'm considering this card and hope to save a decent amount of money by relying on complimentary travel insurance for me, wife and 2 kids. Would more than make up for the extra $225 in annual fee?

    • why not the Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Card instead?
It gives you 20k more points, which can worth around $360 (based on Points Hack 1.8c valuation), while the difference in annual fee is $225
Just trying to understand the points game, if I miss anything here?

      • not worth the annual fee for 20k more points ;)

    • Can anyone confirm for this card if hotel bookings count towards the spend?

      • Why wouldn’t they?

        • I mean theoretically should be fine but just seeing if there's anything to stop someone booking a hotel, meeting spend and cancelling the booking.

          • @fivespice: Nah, I have done that a couple of times but usually end up meeting minimum spend without needing to

    • +1

How do you confirm you've met the criteria spend for the month? And since it says "from approval", does the first month start when you receive the approval email or when you activate the card (since there is some days between approved and receiving the card, set up etc). Also once you meet this criteria, how do you track/ensure you get the 30,000 bonus velocity points? It feels there is no clear way to track these criteria ?

      • +2

30 days from approval date (when you get the "you're approved!" email).
        No way of tracking.

        • cheers, and the 30,000 bonus from this threads offer? Is it just auto linked since you put in your VF member number when you sign up to the eligible credit card?

          • +2

@Pecco: Yep, there is nothing to activate, it will automatically be credited to you upon meeting the eligibility

  • It's there a link to virgin for this offer

    • Not yet, will update the post once it’s available.
You could check your VFF app and it may show up under ‘latest bonus offers’

      • I assume successfully apply means having your application approved? Not just submitting

        • +1

          Yes, you assume right sir.

  • +1

Literally applied for Westpac Qantas card yesterday. 😞

    • +2

Withdraw the application. Re-apply tomorrow. 30,000 worth the hassle

      • I can't see a way of withdrawing online so I guess I need to call Westpac?

Why re-apply tomorrow though? Is it to allow time for the old application to clear from Westpac system?

        • Yes call them. You can re-apply next week if you want. The offer sitting there for another month so no rush.

      • +3

But that’s Qantas and this deal is for velocity?

        • +1

Offer not available if you’ve held an Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black card with Altitude Rewards, Qantas or Velocity in the last 12 months. T&Cs apply.

Westpac TC does seem to exclude Qantas as well if you held in last 12 months.

    • Activate the offer straight away- it would most likely apply anyway since it hasn't been approved yet etc.

  • +1

does this usually need a separate registration? I can see the offer on my app, but nothing to click to apply the offer (other than "see cards")

    • +2

Doesn't seem to be a registration for the offer… steps from website/app:

      1. Apply for a Velocity Points earning credit card with an annual fee (American Express Velocity Escape card is not eligible)
      2. Once approved, meet the eligibility requirements for the bonus Points offer for the card you've applied for
      3. When you receive the bonus Points from the card issuer, within 30 days you'll get your additional 30,000 bonus Points from Velocity!
  • +1

I applied for a Westpac velocity card last week, still waiting for approval. Any chance I would get the bonus as I have not yet "successfully applied" yet?

    • +1

Withdraw the application. Re-apply tomorrow. Just to be sure. 30,000 points worth that hassle.

      • +2

        Will be another credit check.

    • +2

When they offered this at the beginning of the year, I had done the same thing and applied for a card about 3 weeks before the promo, I still got the extra bonus points when I received the bonus points from the card. So they may do the same thing again

    • +1

I reckon if you activate before the first set of points goes from westpac into velocity you should be fine. I did something similar but for Qantas and it worked even though I activated the offer while the card was on the way. I don't think velocity actually know when you're issued a card…

      • We don't have to activate this one it seems. But I agree, I don't think they see exactly when you apply. Fingers crossed

        • correct, doesn't need to be activated.

  • +1

Applied today :) Thanks for the heads up. I can see the "offer" on velocity frequent flyer website as well. It doesn't say anything about applying for multiple cards as far I am sure. So is it like 30k bonus points per eligible card?

  • Very attractive offer. Thanks for sharing.

  • +2

Is there a waiting period of the Virgin Flyer Card? I just closed the same card last month.

    • I also would like to know, as I couldn't find anything on the website

      • +2

6 months when I spoke to them last time.

    • Also curious about this…

      • +2

I called them , they said it will be considered as new account and will be eligible for bonus points. No waiting period.
But I doubt whether the CS rep had enough knowledge about this!

        Maybe this is true then

        • I guess we will find out - just reapplied!

          • @Tock: how did it go?

            • @Ehty: Approved under the 60k point deal link and the "bonus" 30k should apply automatically - no indication of any issues as a returning customer within 12 months, approval was quick. Next step is to spend!

  • Thanks OP. Makes up for all the awful card offers these days.

  • -6

It doesn't make sense. How do you get 90000 points ?
    Its only 60000 points.

    • +2

It's 60k through the card offer itself + 30k bonus from this offer.

      • -3

from which offer there's no offer it takes you to the website and there's only 60000k points unless I am missing something ?

        • +3

60k bonus points will be issued by ‘Virgin Money’ bank, that offer is available until Jan 2024.

Additional 30k bonus will be issued by ‘Velocity FF’ after you’ve received 60k from the CC issuer. This second offer started today, valid until 17 Dec.

          • @kc7: thanks for explanting mate. Legend

            • +7

@madman33: Don’t you work for Velocity Frequent Flyer? Unless you accidentally marked yourself associated

  • The Westpac card has two criteria, one for the 90,000 in the first 3 months, and then an additional 30,000 after a year. Would I need complete both to be eligible for this 30,000 bonus?

    • +2

Meeting the first criteria gives you 90,000 bonus - so that in itself is enough for you to then receive this 30,000 bonus.

      • Which offer are you referring to?

        • Westpac gives you 120k points (90 initially, another 30 if you renew for second year). It has more features like lounge / upgrades etc but with higher AFees.

      • Oh thank you!!

  • Can anyone advise the best way to use velocity points . Except on virgin flight?
    Flights only

    • +5

Business and First Class Flight on Singapore Airlines/United

      • do you need to transfer the points to krysflyer or something?

        • +2

Nah. you can book directly on Virgin Velocity Website.

      • +1

Etihad and Qatar airway too for European trips.

        • What about Emirates?

    • OzB classifieds

  • I remember comparable QFF bonus points deal required you to not have held a QFF earning card for 12 months, but this doesn't seem to stipulate that in the T&Cs? Can anyone confirm?

    • Same concern. Will I be eligible if I have held card in the past 12 months?

      • +1

        @roadeh @AnyFurtherDiscount
It doesn’t include that clause in their T&Cs because they’ve put the eligibility test on the card issuer.
So that is something you’ll have to individually check with the bank.

If you meet eligibility with the bank, you should be getting this 30k bonus I believe.

  • Nooo!! Applied for the NAB Velocity card last week :(
