    does it work against youtube

    • As a safari extension, I think it does.

    • Probably only browser and not in app.

    • If it is in browser, yes. No on mobile apps.
But you do not need to pay for this to block youtube ads in a browser…just use an adblock extension and turn off allow acceptable ads.

      • What one, most dont work now for youtube.

    • +1

      iOS and iPadOS:
Confirming it works as an extension in Safari.
In utube app you need to run a shortcut to block ads (according to AdGuard video). Can’t confirm this works as I don’t use the utube app. Adguard also blocks ads in my other apps.
It also runs a local VPN to prevent ads/tracking etc.
Offers a paid VPN service as well (not tried).

SmarTubeTV for android tv and YouTube revanced extended for android mobile.

      • Is that an app for the TV, you use it instead of youtube?

        • +2

Yes. You need to sideload. Use Downloader app with yellow orange icon if your tv won’t let you download via basic browser. SmarTube for TV and Youtube Revanced Extended for Smartphone.

    • It says that one can "share" the Youtube video and open with Adguard blocks the ads. Not ideal but if it works might be ok for longer vids.

    • Use Newpipe .APK (not from playstore)

    • try grayjay app for andriod
      lord louis rossman
all the big streaming and video platforms in one app

  • I love using Nextdns ($2 pm) , but a lifetime subscription is tempting

    • Whose lifetime? Yours or theirs? Could be real short if they go bust. Low $s, so not much risk.

For me, UBO all the way.

      • +3

Mate this is DNS level blocking not some browser extension

  • +9

    Ublock origin $0 🥱

    • +3

DNS server vs. a browser extension. Okay then..

      • correct me if im wrong, but this is for the extension version?

        • +1

I've never used adguard on PC, but I use their adguard app on android and it's great.

on my browser I use ublock origin. but adguard gets rid of ads from apps and what not (not just browsers).

          • @bohn: yeah cuz im pretty sure adguard android sets up a local VPN connection which then checks traffic against the blocklists. Using a DNS blocker on android like nextdns OR adguard HOME is probably the best (via private DNS setting, not local VPN). But if your on android you can use unlock origin on firefox mobile :)

            • @Leho: using adguard app is better than just using a private dns in android settings.

              I have adguardhome @ home
I have firedox with ublock origin installed on phone, but I mostly use Brave (with adguard running).

    • Ublock isn't available on iOS.
Adguard has a Safari Browser Extention that can be used.

      • wipr for ios is great

        • Thanks. I will check it out.
          Do you use this?

          • +1

@karazy: yeah, wipr on phone, ublock origin on pc. works literally 100%

  • I wonder if the 15% off the first purchase is stackable?

    • doesnt stack

  • +1

Doe s this work? You need them on app. I use new pipe and that does a better job

    • I change default to Newpipe in android settings. Works a treat and has features only paid YT version has

    • +1

pretty confident this does an even better job

  • Apple users: You can get the Adguard pro version for $15 through App Store and does family up to 6 devices. Says once off charge $15

    • +1

On IOS, there is no difference between AdGuard pro and Adguard free. For now pro and free version are exactly the same.

But if you use DNS service (for example, block websites for kids) provided by Adguard, you have to pay.

      • +1

Ok thanks. When I just installed the free version it suggested I pay for premium as it blocks YouTube ads in safari as well as DNS, malware and custom filters

  • +2

God I love their software; but Moscow and Cypress are 2 locations I'm just not in-bed with being in charge of my DNS data.
No actual proof of wrong doing though. It might be fine.

For me, a raspberry Pi with PiHole and Unbound is too easy, and just one youtube guide away for people who want the same.

    • Is there a recommended video?

    • +2

2 x Pi Zero running Pihole (Primary & Secondary DNS) for redundancy, and PiVPN on one to block when mobile as well as to get me back into the home network. A little bit of reading to get it setup, but it has been working well for quite a while.

    • I’m just here for this thread 🧵

    • I hadn't realized the Russia/Cyprus links. I'm currently running AdGuard as a Home Assistant plugin. I'll have to find out where PiHole is based.

      • +1

PiHole isn't based anywhere; its an entirely open source product. It's based in your home where you compile it.

        • Thanks, that is what I was hoping, but hasn't yet taken the time to check.

    • What about Chinese devices and cars? Yes I'm concerned but hey we're in too deep with China already

      • What do you mean by 'what about them?' lol
We're talking digital, right? If you dislike chinese equipment, it's not hard to avoid.

I didn't do it on purpose, but now you point it out….

Router is chinese, but firmware is OpenSource compiled by me.
Phone is Dutch, and software compiled by me.
Smart Watch is OpenSource, and compiled by me.
Car is Japanese (and doesn't connect to anything; it's a car).
        Data is Self Hosted.

        • I wasn't having a go at you, and I commend you for having the intelligence and time discipline to customise your device software.

I have been using AdGuard for a year after seizing upon a previous OB deal and would recommend it to others. It was a great buy IMO

My wife has a Realme phone which she is pretty happy with. It was also a great buy (another OB deal).

I was just attempting to point out that authoritarian regimes are already embedded in many of our homes by way of electronics (including modern vehicles such as EVs). For me personally, it's a risk I'm willing to take for the sake of saving a dollar and also for the convenience. Hopefully I won't regret it some day!

          • @Pusdi: Luckily, between toyota, fairphone, asus, and samsung; its not too hard to avoid for normies, even without custom compiling things, if you needed to.

  • Will this block the temu ads on Ozbargain? Specifically the mouth exerciser?

  • +2

I got this a few months ago. It works as described but doesn't provide a whole lot of advantage over the free DNS.

The only real advantage for me is the ability to whitelist certain domains and apps that don't work well with the blocks in place (cash rewards, etc).

    • Thank you :)
I was struggling to understand how Adguard is better then say a Free DNS paired with a browser-level Adblocker (eg. Brave Browser), your comment has been the deciding factor for me :)

  • +1

I would say go for this: https://www.stacksocial.com/sales/control-d-5-year-subscript…

Not as cheap as Adguard but it is really good, I have been using it for some time now.
