OWC Sale I just ran across. Reasonable for a 512GB drive, albeit SATA 2. Supplies limited. Advertised to be the same ones Apple used to put into their machines (as an add on)

True, but this could be excellent for an older laptop
Oh really? ;)
But would you notice the difference between this and say vertex 3 or 4 for daily tasks? I can't tell the difference between my intel 320 and sandisk extreme. I'm sure if I was transferring files or benchmarks, I'd be able to tell but I don't do that often enough to care. Of course some people would, but for the majority don't think they'd realised unless they were told of the performance difference.
220mb/s read 180mb/s write… not bad especially if you get two and raid 0 them.
that what she said
this is excellent, for someone jumping onto ssd from standard hd it probably is mindblown
Almost tempted to put one in my Lenovo X200… but still can't justify it given the amount of usage the machine gets.
wow tempting
just wondering how reliable it is compared to Intel SSDs ?
I'm also wondering this; didn't even know Toshiba made SSD's.
most benchmarks show the difference between sata 2 and sata 3 is insignificant.
that said RAW read speed - isn't the benchmark to use, IOPS is… as you want lots of little files fast rather than one big one.
This.
Other then file benchmarks you wont notice a day to day difference from sata II to sata III. The biggest notice people see is the access times, which isnt bus dependant.
It's amazing how quickly SSD cost/GB is going down. I remember buying a 120GB at the start of this year for $200. Now you can get 256GB for $200 and 512GB for $300!
That's why my IT storage policy is: never buy more space than you actually need. Too bad this is in conflict with my OzBargain policy which is: impulse buy everything that's a bargain.
No conflict. Those policies are perfectly in harmony. Both require absolutely no forward thinking!
sata II isnt of putting still get good speeds,.. an its really the access times that countrs more for me,…. id consider this for my pc.. mmm so tempting.
Hi All, has anyone ever used these in a RAID 0 setup, these or any other SSD's? I seem to hear that TRIM is not supported..?
yeah my ssds are like 100 years old.. ok, pretty much first generation ones…
apparently if you connect them via the intel chipset -ich10 t-rim should still work.my SSDs are no where near as good as a single current SSD though… i got a vertex 4 in my case now as well… will be installing windows 8 when it comes out on it… so should have held off buying it though!
can this be used as a replacement for the laptop HDD?
Note: i have never used an SSD…
Yes.
Yes, as long as your laptop doesn't require a slim drive. This is a standard 9.5mm height and not a slim 7.5mm.
ok, purchased the drive.. if it is not fitting to my laptop, will use it in my desktop back in India…
Even better - only $279 with coupon code READERSPC. Found it when Googling for reviews on the drive.

EDIT: Shipping jumps up from $4 to $21 (cheapest shipping option disappears) if you choose a quantity of 2. If you want more quantity, you may need to submit multiple orders.
where do you enter the coupon ? cheers
So tempted to get one of these…
I was already tempted at $298 but at $279 I don't think I can resist…
…aaaand purchased. thanks masterreset!
temptation is huge, good place to store all the steam games bought and never played :(
Bought on of these and will be my first SSD.
Hopefully I experience that mind bogling speed everyone talks about transitioning from HDD to SSD! :P
Are there special cables I would need to fit it into my desktop, or is it the same as standard hard drives?
Sata 2 cable and power cable from the psu
I was considering getting this to replace my laptop drive on the G6-2113TU but I don't know how I would go about replacing the DVD drive. I want it to be a clean flat surface when I'm finished rather than a gaping hole that an SSD can clearly be seen through. My product manual is here http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03233548.pdf on page 19 it says that my laptop supports 12.7mm drives. I'm not sure how I'd replace this with a hard drive anybody here who's done this that can point me to a tutorial?
What is the IOPS for this?
512GB is kind of overkill. I have a 1TB HDD and I haven't even filled 200GB yet. A better option is just to get a 240GB SSD and once that fills up, get another 60GB for like 60 bucks.
Thats nice dear.
My main machine is a pair of 480gb SSD's in raid 0 which is almost full (steam games uleh)
Then again i am not known for deleting stuff, given the 70ish tb currently in my main server.
Do you expect me to be impressed by that or something?
no merely stating that it may not be overkill for some people - your statement is too broad.
anything you need/want to load fast can go on SSD's games are a great example.
Mine showed up on Monday, not bad for shipping time and the item works well.
i got my First SSD, it is verry small… think i can fit in 2 of these in my laptop, will check today.
Bah Sata 2 :(
I know 512gb but prefer speed than size.
