    • At this price, I think those headphones own you.

  • you need an amp also for an extra coupla grand

    • +1

Strapping vintage speakers to my head. Now there’s an idea!!!

      • Hence the comment about over ear headphones…

    • Ok, go ahead and wear your open back earphones outside then

      • -2

Are people really walking around outside wearing $1300 earbuds? I was assuming anyone crazy enough to buy these would be sitting motionless in front of a headphone amp.

        • There are people walking around with LV purses, Hermes bags, or rings/gold worth more than 5k. IEMs are meant to be listened to on the move. Hence, you see all those artists dancing on stage and wearing one? Do you see any artists wearing open-back headphones to concerts?

          • @Jetkuma: So the target market for this deal is… Bono?

            • @caitsith01: They are tons of working musos and professional kit is expensive in all industries.

    • +1

Your "open backed over ear headphones" do not necessarily sound better than IEMs. You clearly don't know much about headphones in general.

      • -3

I know a fair bit about hi-fi (I rebuild older amps/speakers/turntables for fun), although admittedly less about headphones/IEMs than other components. I recently did a bit of a deep dive and ended up with some open backed hifiman headphones which are surprisingly fun to listen to.

That deep dive certainly confirmed my impression, however, that the headphone world is one of the worst for people obsessing over utterly ridiculous and irrelevant details and paying fantastically inflated prices. Like most things hi-fi I bet many of the allegedly critical differences between headphones could not be discerned by the people shrieking about them in forums via an actual blind listening test.

I know that sort of view isn't popular on this site which seems to attract a, er, certain type of personality.

Personally if I was going to spend this sort of money on something to listen to music I would definitely prefer speakers first or some over ears cans second just in terms of the actual experience of using them.

    • spend lots of money on something inherently fragile

Like a new smartphone with a cpu fast enough to open the camera app within 10 seconds yeah?

  • Man, not sure I'd trust MMCX at this price point, I've had lots of headphones (Shure) have connection problems. Any thoughts from owners of similar earphones?

    • The Sennheiser implementation of the MMCX connector is quite good actually.

I have not had any connnectivity problems
(but I also use them gently and have not had moments,
where the cable got YANKED! accidentally )

It has a small ring around the socket, which "discourages"
other random MMCX plugs from getting a good fit,
and so the Sennheiser cable is the the best cable for it.

Plus, the Sennheiser MMCX can 'rotate' around,
so this introduces a little bit of flexibility and manoeuvrability.

    • I've had to replace the MMCX on my SE846's twice over the past 6 years (one for each side).
Had to get the connectors from taobao and use a very thin soldering iron tip, was not easy the first time!

  • The marketing placebo effect - the more you pay the more you enjoy.

  • Cheers OP for making me realise how poor I am!

  • I don't understand how earphones can be a genuine audiophile option. Over ear/headphones, sure quality etc., but earphones everything is smaller which necessarily means it is much harder to manufacture high quality items. Further, wired earbuds means you get sounds whenever the wires bump or move so they always sound worse than headphones when moving around (even wired headphones the sound of the cable moving is decoupled from the sound you hear far better than with earphones due to the weight of the cable relative to the drivers etc.).

Unless there's something i'm missing i would just think earphones will always be inferior sound quality to headphones at any given price point, so why would you ever get audiophile earphones when the point is the sound quality.

Spent 2 hours in addicted to audio trying out focal headphones because of the steep discount, ended up not really liking any besides the utopia which were too expensive.
They gave me the ej07m iem's to try and they blew me away instantly.
Headphones can feel like speakers on your head and you're in a room that's playing music but iem's make music sound like it's coming from within your head, smaller drivers but they are right next to your eardrums.
I decided I liked bassy iem's and got ikko oh10s for $250, couldn't be happier.
      it's all preference.

  • At this price point you really should look into getting custom IEMs made up instead…

    • Definitely!

    • There aren't many custom iems that sound this good. JH audio for example mostly sound terrible.

  • Curious, would this make a difference if you only listen to Spotify instead of Tidal

    • +4

CD quality is all that we need, anything above that requires dog ears

      • Yep. Seen all this wanky 40khz response, high-res, etc (when they tracks are highly compressed / normalized modern tracks anyway)

    • -1

Well tuned earphones really do make a difference,
      even if you're streaming,
but the biggest amount of difference would be from the quality of the source,
eg. you can use MQA* (from Tidal), or FLAC / WAV files.

*There lots of videos on Youtube about MQA being snake-oil,
but more importantly you would need a good enough DAC chipset
that can "unfold" the MQA files.

      Disclaimer:
I don't have any experience with MQA
nor do I care to want to listen to MQA either.

Thanks for clarifying that you have no idea what you're talking about.

    • Yes it would

  • Anyone who knocks this down without actually giving a fair shake before passing judgement, should probably avoid consuming anything that's considered above average.

  • Good for gym?

  • At this price you can get decent CIEMs

    • You can probably get quite a few pairs of decent Chi-Fi IEM's.

  • Free Standard Parcel Delivery

Ya - Shipping killed this deal.

    • 2 years warranty ✅ | 30 days free return ✅

      Return on day 29

  • I’m not sure if these qualify as headphones? ( buds maybe) Also wondering if there’s a typo in the price?

    • if there’s a typo in the price?

      No typo.
I get the same price(s) in the title as well.

  • People seriously buy these? Economy must be doing better than I thought

    • I checked now and URL has " (1354 clicks) "

I checked the eBay listing yesterday and today,
and the amount sold still hasn't increased.

On the flipside, the economy mustn't be doing well,
if "luxury items" have started to be sold at >50% off
than what they used to be, about a year ago.

  • How do these compare to Anko?

  • "They gave me the ej07m iem's to try and they blew me away instantly."

I'm surprised that they have stick- em-in-your waxy-ear type headphones as demonstrator models in shops. Is that common?

    • +1

They have sterilised silicone buds on the side in different sizes generally for testing (at least at minidisc)

      • It's obvious now that you've told me.

Did Sennheiser buy out the company that made these earbuds?

I recall years back a friend showing me a pair of 1500 earbuds, and I recall the name being similar

I was blown away, took it off after a few seconds, any longer and I would have to buy them

    • Sennheiser made these.

IE 900's are seriously good. In a recent trip to Tokyo I was lucky enough to try these out as well as many other 'very' expensive IEM's. the IE900's were my favorite sounding. I tried a few that had asking prices of 4 to 6k aud.
I personally ended up buying the 'Meze audio Advar,' They sounded quite similar to the IE900's. I bought them on sale for $830.
At 1350 I still would probably lean towards the Meze Advar. like with buying any audio product at this price. try before you buy.

    • IE900 are AU$ 1199 at Minidisc (in-store, Sydney).
This deal ends by 4pm - Saturday 21/10.
