This deal is for the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 with the metal heatsink covers which hide the exposed heatpipes on the SE version. I've been looking for this version for a while since the first Thermalright coolers dropped but it usually goes for over $100 as per 3x Camel.

Not sure of the performance difference with the standard SE version but they should be within margin of error. As far as I'm aware the only reason you'd purchase this over the SE version is for aesthetic reasons (but you only save about $5 going with the SE). At this price point it's pretty much unbeatable.

I haven't posted in a long time so let me know if anything could use improvement, cheers.

Keeping my best mates 7700X nice and chilly :) (I built it for him, he's not IT savvy).

    • Loud?

      • +1

He said, IT’S KEEPING HIS BEST MATES 7700X NICE AND CHILLY!

      • Not at all.
Whisper silent. Fans are locked at minimum until it reaches above 75c; which it won't reach with normal desktop use.
It will when gaming, but thats fine, there's music and sometimes headphones in that scenario.

  • +1

    Showing $56.90 for me

    • Same, price dropped :)

    • Probably because I'm in NZ, but makes the deal even better

  • +3

Bought this for my very first PC build not too long ago. Saw some pretty good reviews on it regarding the price point. Even though it's only cooling a 5700x, I've had no issues whatsoever. Keeps it in the mid 50s under load and low to mid 30s at idle. Mine is the SE, but the version before this one with the condensers protruding a bit more… this revision of the SE must be fairly new, a little closer in looks to the AK620.

  • +7

Just like it's predecessor the Peerless Assassin, this thing is a beast for it's price, put its into the same category as the Noctua NH-D15s' which is around 3x the price. It's also one of the more quiet dual tower coolers, due to its limited 1550~ RPM high performances fans.

Here's a review on the Intel 13700K and AMD Ryzen 7700X.

    https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermalright-phantom-sp…

    • I actually found the SE 120 super noisy with hum and had to swap in some be quiet fans. Excellent performance now though.

      • It’s weird. Reviews talk of its amazing low noise, but a number of forums talk about users with concerns over noise levels.

Sounds like they may deteriorate and develop whirring or humming over time - did yours?

Mine is still silent, but I’ve got some Arctic P5 fans ready to drop in if needed…

        • Nope out of the box it was terrible. Silent on idle but very load when under load and terrible resonance hum. I actually swapped in some Arctic P5’s temporarily which have a famous hum when used as a variable CPU fan and they were an improvement.

Anyhow still happy with it as a unit. My only other fault is the motherboard backing rises are made of plastic and they split when I screwed into them too much. They should be metal.

        • I read the Peerless Assassins were quiet too in reviews but from the beginning my 3 month old PA 120 SE fans are very loud when underload it's a helicopter sound from the pc when I'm playing D4

        • Mine is quite loud too
Maybe those reviews said it's quiet relative to the cooling performance?
But when set to 50%+ definitely is not quiet

      • Try test with the fan only.

      • What fans did you use to swap? I was thinking of swapping the fans too when i got PA SE

        • +1

Be quiet 120’s, light wing I think they’re called? They’ve been fantastic and super quiet. Also great cooling performance. Make sure to get the PWM version.

  • Got the PS120 SE.

    Awesome cooler for the price.

    • No complaints about fan noise?

      • +1

None. I’m not sure if I got lucky or if they will get more of a rattle and hum vibe over time, as some forums suggest.

  • I have a peerless assassin se and it's a killer cooler. Punches way past its weight for the price

  • It is actually 6 pipes, not 7

    • +6

Incorrect, the PS120 is 7 pipes. Its predecessor the PA120 had 6.

      • +2

        My bad, you are right

        • +2

Don’t sweat it. Performance improvement is only slight, but measurable nonetheless.

This is the bang for buck HSF champ…

    • +1

You are referring to the Peerless Assassin 120.

      https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermalright-phantom-sp…

You can count the heatpipes in the photos.

      • I've got this one once I go past 700rpm it's kinda noisy…did I get a bad one?

        • +1

Mine is the same, it is what it is for the outstanding price. Can always replace the fans with another brand if it's an issue for you

  • Does this leave enough room for a jonsbo ram cooler?

    • I’ve got no idea of ithe Jonsbo’s dimensions, but you should be fine to clear it, since the closest fan can be offset and lifted higher to clear any high-profile fan or heat sinks/coolers.

  • Who the heck is suomole?

      • +2

scorptec is now stocking thermalright products but suomole is a few dollars cheaper

  • +4

Also available - same unit with lights. ARGB PS120 SE (Phantom Spirit 120 SE) for $56.29 for anyone looking for some flashy lights to make it go faster. www.amazon.com.au/Thermalright-PS120SE-TL-C12B-S-Technilogy-…

I’ve not been able to find any reviews which compare the OP’s version with the SE (no cover plate on top so heat pipes exposed, but 3mm lower - $58.90 @ www.amazon.com.au/Thermalright-PS120SE-TL-C12B-Technilogy-Be…) or the ARGB version linked above, but I suspect they’d be marginal at best, since all use the same fans.

    • +1

Thanks @UncleRico - grabbed the ARGB version, delivered today and it's working great.

      • Glad to hear it. It’s a great cooler.

Out of interest, are the fans inaudible on yours?

        • +1

I'd say they are a touch louder than the Noctua NF-A14s I had on my previous cooler (though 140mm versus these 120mms) - my tower is under my desk though so not really a big issue for me but I suspect if it was desk height I might notice it a bit more.

  • Can anybody please recommend a budget low profile CPU cooler for an ITX build? Nothing fancy, will need to cool either Ryzen 5 (AM4) or i5 (LGA 1700).

I heard Thermalright does low profile coolers as well but there are few models…

Note: I haven't bought the case yet.

    Thanks heaps

    • +2

best to find the case, then the cooler that can fit/adequately cool . unless youre just going for whatever size, then this one would be good anyway

      • Thanks, I already have Torrent Nano but it's too big for an ITX case. CM NR200 is also 'big' to me, so looking for smaller case than torrent nano or NR200.

Any recommendations on smaller ITX case as well?

        I currently own a b450i with Ryzen 5600 and z690i motherboard with i3 1300f. Will pair them with a RX6600 GPU.

        • +2
          • Ncase M1 if you can find one. This is what I have for my main build, and it is an excellent case to build in.
          • Node 304, use this for my media server.
          • LianLi Q58 or A4H2O

Otherwise, keep an eye on r/sffpc on reddit, lots of good recs there.

          • +1

@ONEMariachi: Fractal Terra is very popular right now. Thermals aren't great though but you aren't really putting anything too hot in there.

+1 to the LianLi Q58 or A4H2O. I've see the PCIe 3 versions going for some nice prices but I'd recommend PCIe 4 for future upgrades.

Sugo 16 is a cheap option. Just check your GPU will fit though.

    • +1

What is the max cooler height of the case you are looking at?

Thermalright AXP90-47 Full Copper is excellent (47mm).

    • +1

Suomole (seller of this unit) imports lots of Thermalright gear including this SI-100 low profile unit www.amazon.com.au/Thermalright-SI-100-Cooler-Bearing-Technol… @ $39.50

It’s not going to match the performance of the PS120, but is great value for anyone who needs low profile.

As nappy suggests, best to confirm your case of choice and clearance before committing to a low profile cooler, since it’s not the smallest available…

      • Thanks, yes not sure which ITX case to pick. Need to go to drawing board, I have a torrent nano but it's too big for my ITX taste.

        • +1

If you’re trying to keep it as small as possible, the AXP90-47 is a lower profile and better bet. The recommended all copper unit is awesome, but there’s sub-$50 versions made of different materials if you don’t fancy paying $100+ once you decide on a case…

      • As an SI-100 owner, it barely classifies as low profile. 100mm tall with the fan. It's not a bad cooler by any means, but I'd recommend something like the ID-Cooling IS-50X V2 if you want cheap and low profile: https://www.ple.com.au/Products/647386/id-cooling-iceland-se…

    • +2

I had an rvz03 and have a i5 13600k the noctua L12s is the best performing CPU cooler under 80mm and it was still not powerful enough to cool the 13600k it continued to overheat and that's also with me modding the CPU cooler to have dual fans. Furthermore all my cores were thermal throttled all the time. You will need to go water cooling if cooling an i5 13600k in a small case.
I actually went the other way and now have a torrent nano with the peerless assassin 120 and now get decent temps for the CPU.

      • How decent is your temp? Do you undervolt or put PL1/PL2 restrictions?

        • I wasn't comfortable with the idea of undervolting as such I built the system to accommodate stock usage.
On load the PC hits mid 70s a random 82 or so degrees comes in .. at rest it's 30-40 degrees. With the L12s at rest it was mid 60 degrees and very light load would tip it to 90s

          • @maverickjohn: I see. Roughly similar as my setup (I'm using 13600k + PA120SE too)

    • +1

I went with a 120mm AIO for my ITX build. Low profile while still offering cooling performance comparable to a high-end single tower air cooler. Also it takes longer for the CPU to hit its max temp which helps in ITX cases where the case temperature will be much higher and air coolers just suck in that air.

    • Be careful with 6-7 series Intel itx motherboards, the cooler compatability is really shocking because of all the wifi and double stack M2 ad on modules and oversized heatsinks. Even some single tower 120mm noctua coolers are listed as incompatible ☹️
The amd boards are more forgiving but they also have a few models that have issues. Look for ones with less going on around the socket, lower profile heatsinks etc.

  • Also, white one but not sure if it is different in anyway

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Thermalright-Peerless-Assassin-TL-…

    • +2

That’s the 6 pipe Peerless Assassin.

You’ll be trading off a little performance for the white paint and RGB bling. Which is precisely what my daughter did for her pc…

      • Thank you for confirming! I got a corsair 4000d in white recently and wasnt sure how the black one would look.

        • +1

The PA120 is a great cooler to. If you need a white build, it will serve you well…

    • +1

…of the cheapest seller of the best bang for buck HSF on the market.

      If that ain’t a bargain, I don’t know what is…

  • +2

This is the best heatsink so far.

  • +1

Hall of fame cooler, got the Assassin in my rig now and it's flawless.

  • +1

Can I install my 7500F directly?

    • +1

      I hope so, that's what I'm doing

      (Am5 listed as compatible)

      • +1

Is a better cooler required for 7500f? Considering buying this for a system that hasn't arrived yet but unsure if the stock cooler will be noticeably worse/louder/hotter in 4k gaming given it's relatively low max power draw

        • +1

          Shrugs.

It's a great price, and it looks cool

  • Is the ps120 the one with the metal bracket and the ps120se is plastic?

    • That's what I've gathered from reviews , yep

  • +1

According to a review it included TF7 thermal paste, which seems to be quite good. Their is a graphic on the following page: https://koolingmonster.com/insights/the-best-thermal-paste-f…

The TF7 is near the top (lowest temperature under load), 1.5 degrees cooler than the Arctic MX4, which is the product Amazon is promoting on their site (along with the dearer Arctic MX6).

    • How are they hitting ~80 degrees on an i3 10105?

    • +1

On marketplaces like Amazon, people exchange money for goods and services…

      • I mean.. the standard price is $56AUD.. doesnt have a % discount listed.

        • That’s a different listing. Click on the one above posted by the OP.

          • @UncleRico: People get a bit confused by Amazon, I find. For every sale page of an item, there will be many more with all kinds of prices - some less, some way more than the item was ever worth to begin with. All comes down to who is selling it, their stock levels, where they are, etc.

  • Running 3x Peerless Assassins. One keeps my 5800X3D nice and cool without need for undervolting. The Phantom is even slightly better. Go for it.

    • +1

I think 1 per motherboard is sufficient

      • LOL, nice one. One in my X570/5800X3D rig, one in my partners B550M/5600 rig, one in my B550M/5600 Unraid Server / Pfsense router rig. Only thing I'll say, is to watch out for the height of the cooler. The Phantom is slightly shorter than Peerless, but they still push the height a little. Two of my cases are Lian-Li PC-P80s, so wasn't a big issue for me. But I was looking to use one in one of those Silverstone 4U rackmount cases and it is pushing that height limit, would be same for some mATX cases, too. If you've used full size Noctuas, etc, before, it will be nothing new - if you can fit a NH-D14, you'll fit this.

Edit: Oh, and just a note for those wanting quiet - the Thermalright fans are not the quietest in the world. It wasn't a deal breaker for me, I like the soothing sound of fans, but don't expect Noctua levels of quiet with these. These are all about cooling for as little money as possible. Things like sounds levels are secondary.

  • +1

SE is 154mm vs this one which is 157mm. Something to keep in mind if you have a 155mm limit (pretty sure some cases do).

  • This thing is a beast. It put my aio to shame

  • Got this for my 13600k. Normal daily browsing and watching video the CPU barely over 30deg

  • Will this cool my 5900X well?

    • Yes

      • How well is well? below 80C on load?

        • zen 3 will take advantage of thermal head room and it's normal to get to 80c on a air cooler. The chiplets run hotter cause of the smaller surface area compared to a monolithic configuration. If you want under 80c best to do a custom water loop but then that costs 10 times more then this air cooler.

          • @mordinhoz: My NH-D14 keeps my 5900X under 80C load. Typically 65-70C in multi-core, 55C in gaming, single core boost can hit 70C on 1 of the CCDs. Turning on PBO increases the temps by a good 10C across the board for a miniscule performance increase (less than 2%).

  • Arrived today, now cooling a 9900K at smallest FTT load (220W+) <90 deg all cores sustained.

    • Mine arrived today, the y patch cord has one end to 1st fan with 3 pins while the other end to the 2nd fan has 4 pins. Did yours come like this?

      • One 4 pin controls both fan speeds, you basically set the PWM fan speed for 1 fan and the second fan will automatically have the same fan speed using the splitter. Or you could control both fan speeds separately without the splitter but not sure why you'd do that.
