Not a worry. I have one of these and can say it has been faultless.
If you want cold drinks in the car in the hot Aussie sun - at $149 this is a good choice
Surprisingly, it can fit 21 375ml cans.

So I have chug the other three in Dan’s parking lot? Challenge accepted.

          • @mskeggs: Where in NSW are you? We might have to meet up for the beerchug challenge (pending beer quality). ;)

Thanks OP Even with $12.00 shipping

  • Are these any good for camping?

    • +4

Too small for camping - more of a car or lunch fridge

    • Yes - really depends on your needs. I've used it with an upgraded lid (turns into a 20l fridge/freezer) for 3 day trips. I also use it to carry ice creams and ice packs. Ice packs go into a cooler to keep milk and other perishables. Larger fridges require more space in the car and are heavier to move. So pros and cons…

  • Assume only cools while the engine is running so it doesn't drain battery?

    • +2

That's up to your car and how it manages ACC sockets. In terms of charging while engine off, if your car keeps the socket active,

"the unit features a three-stage low-battery cut-out to prevent a flat or damaged car battery"

    • +1

You can wire it up anyway you like. It does have low voltage protection. With a little one like this I wouldn't bother with a secondary battery, I would probably just run it off the main battery as it only draws 45w, but I would only leave it for a few hours at a time like that. Say three at the most with a typical car battery.
It would be fine for shopping etc but not left all day while at work.

      • Damn! 45watts is massive for a car fridge! DO NOT BUY. speciality one so small. A normal waeco / engel will use half that and is 5-7 times bigger. 2 amps Average on those. Unless the 45 watts is at peak time… and actual consumption average is closer to 15.

        • +3

Yes 45w is max - probably when compressor is going full boar. These have been around for quite while now and they are well enough regarded. Lots of reviews in multiple forums, Youtube etc They work great but not as efficient as and Engel but seriously, this is $149 and an Engel how much again?

        • +3

Just curious, which Engel uses 2 amps? I've owned the 15L Engel that was 2.8A when running. And the larger 40Fridge & Freezer Engel and that also uses around 38-45Watts when running. If your spreading it out to get an average over 24 hours, then the comparison with the Jaycar fridge isn't valid as you don't know it's average over 24hrs and at what ambient temp etc.

  • Will it fit in Tesla Model Y?

    • Yes. Frunk and subtrunk.

    • but the 12v doesnt work unless its in "camp" mode.

      • It’ll work when the car is on. So not necessarily camp mode.

      • It does. If it is plugged into the car, then I park the car and lock it. The 12V still works all the way to the next morning and the main battery decreases slightly as expected too. I have the 25L version with the brushed metal finish and it is good. Also works with the Model Y's 16V voltage as it is not true 12V.

        • Did you have sentry mode on?

I have been using similar (with battery) to these for a couple of years. Bought the 20l lid and fits almost a carton of cans.

    • In case you haven't tried, one of the brass monkey 25l covers fits this with the larger lid.

  • Hmm might be handy for storing frozen stuff purchased whilst out and about away from home

  • +9

Add another $50 for double the capacity (30L)

  • does anyone know if this will run off a battery for say 48 hours?

I want to store stuff in this with a battery pack. Any advice would be nice
says 0.25kwh for 24 hours so i would need a 0.50kwh battery or 50ah battery?

    • +5

      Gday.

The manual says 45W average power consumption.
      And it also says .25kW.h/24h.
If I were calculating this, I would take the higher value of 45Wx24h = 1080Wh.

      Your battery would need to provide at a minimum 1080Wh. A 12V, 1080Wh/12V = 90Ah. For 24 hours.

It would need to do this twice, to make a total of 48 hours, bringing the total to 180Ah.

Again assuming you have a brand new battery, and you can get his much out of it, that's great.

If not, you might be better with either a larger battery pack, two batteries in parallel, add some charging (like solar), hope for the best on actual power consumption, or require less time.

      Best of luck.

Edit: furthermore, we have no idea how they calculate average consumption.

Is it being opened and closed constantly? Or is it kept closed?

Many factors than the given average at play here.

      Again, best of luck.

      • Definitely overkill to assume the compressor will run constantly 24hrs (after desired temp is reached). Those power consumption figures can probably be cut in half as a rough ball park. But your right its too hard to know all the variables etc

  • +1

I came here to bag the sht out of it.

But it turns out it actually has a compressor, and isn't just more thermoelectric cooler based trash.

    • +2

I've got one of these (had it a while) and really rate it. Even prior to Jaycar selling them I was looking at getting it from the manufacturer direct Alpicool.

It's a decent fridge for under 150. Light and compact foot print.

    • Thanks for the link.

If I could rally the missus to get camping, this'd be in my cart pretty quickly.

  • +2

I have one of these, I sware it was for around $125 last year. A key thing I wish I realised beforehand is it doesn't have tie-off point for you car which makes it a bit dangerous to have just hanging out on a seat. There are tie-offs on the insulted case you can buy it but they are like $80.

  • Probable what these fridges are worth anyway.

  • Just bought one. Hope I made the right choice. Just need to put some sushi while on the way back.

  • Alot of people suggesting these for shopping but note: The fridge will take time to cool down; it doesn't cool down effectively empty (cooling air) and it will likely only run when the car is on.

These are better if you have a second battery in the car or have really long drives.

    • I have real concern now.

      • +2

Dont worry - these fridges cool down very quickly - they have cooling tubes wrapped all around the internal body,
Will be cold in 15 mins and stable in about 30

  • Could be nice and small enough to leave in the boot for keeping the perishable shopping cold, maybe just for the meats and freezer items

    • My thoughts too. I would use it as freezer rather than fridge, because you can always carry a small esky and keep some ice packs in the freezer for it. Would be handy when stocking up on 90% markdowns and frozen goods at Colesworths whilst out and about and not heading home for a while.

  • I bought the newer model yesterday for $299 with (a) the option to add a battery, (b) bluetooth and (c) a different latch for the lid.

Used it today for the first time … worked fine .. kept stuff cold at -2 degrees .. same result as my $1200 Dometic 45L but just wanted a light & small option.

  • Anyone who ordered from this promo received any notification of delivery?

    • Nope, nothing yet.

      • Moat probably overloaded with orders.

        • Lol, and it was just delivered by courier.

  • Fridge arrived and the courier dropped it.

    • Do you mean he physically dropped the box?
It is a good idea waiting until tomorrow to fire it up, so that refrigerant can settle down. Everybody should do this as the fridge may have been inverted st some point in its journey to your house.

      • +1

Yes, he dropped the box. Hopefully the compressor is ok

        • +1

Well it is car fridge, so it can handle some bumps. Also some foam insde the carton will absorb some of the impact, If its broken (unlikely) there is a good guarantee - I think its 3 years
Still, I agree with you . It is frustrating when these clowns are rough with goods like that.

    • +1

don't worry they're pretty tough, well mine is.
