Correct me if I'm wrong but your not allowed to sell OEM licenses as its licensed for the assigned piece of hardware.

    • businesses are allowed to sell OEM licenses, how would all the DIY PC builder get their OS installed?

      • -5

        They'd buy the retail version.

        • +4

          Wrong they buy OEM versions.

These are very cheap, might buy pro myself.

        • +1

that an exception but my point is, you don't need to buy HP, Acer, Toshiba from Harvey Norman just for have Window 7. Also isn't retail version more expensive than OEM due to fact it isn't tied to your motherboard and can be reusable?

        • +3

Fair enough, but it's against the licensing agreement.

OEM System Builder Software License: "Must be preinstalled on a PC and sold to another unrelated party."

        • They only (are only allowed to) sell you OEM versions when buying main parts of a system - cpu, mobo ram.

Lol, this guy has no idea!

OEM issues aside, why would anyone want to buy Windows 7 a month before Windows 8 is released. (Remember that Windows 8 still has the desktop mode, if metro is not for you)

    • +7

Why wouldn't someone want to buy Windows 7 before it's no longer available or harder to get. Windows 8 on a desktop machine is going to be a nightmare to use .. compared to the dreamy Windows 7.

I purposely brought a laptop now, before Win 8 was standard.

      • It's not that bad. I thought I'd miss the Start menu but the search function acts very similar. It's annoying that you can't boot directly to desktop, but it boots me into Windows 30 seconds faster (this wasn't even a clean install but rather an upgrade from Windows 7).

Yet here we are with Windows XP still being sold 11 years after first release..

      • That's it, I used XP all the way through the Vista phase, It's looking like I'm going to do the same thing again with Win7.

    • I'm sure people were saying the same thing of xp when vista was coming out.

      • ..and who actively sourced Vista? no-one ;)

  • Window 7 sold out, XP still available.

    • virus updates and driver updates and are all stopping for XP soon as it reaches end of life, I'd make the transition to 7, I'd also make the transition to 8 people are already redesigning the interface to comply with users. You can put a proper interface on windows 8 now.

  • Managed to get last Win7 Ult- I would have bought more. Thanks Chicken great deal

    • np, manage to score the last one. Someone must of cancel their order.

  • Dear everyone….. Please, please, PLEASE don't buy XP. It is a near obsolete product, and is very dated and VERY slow.

I am a System Administrator and I personally would choose Windows 7 over Windows 8 if you are using a standard laptop or desktop. The 'Desktop Mode' is just too much of a pain flicking back and forth to/from Metro.

Windows 7 is a fantastic operating system. We have 4 year old PC's here that would grind away with XP, but they run fantastically well with Windows 7 and all the same apps installed.

I even have an old PC with 2GB RAM from work they were chucking out running as my Media PC at home (using Windows Media Center). Stick a 2TB disk in it (selling for $104 at MSY) and you can have all/most of your movies and TV shows stored in one spot. So if you can get hold of an old PC then stick Win7 on it and you can probably do the same. You'll need Win 7 Pro, Home Premium or Ultimate to run WMC.

IMHO, Windows 8 will be great for anything that has a touch screen, but I personally don't like using it with any mouse-driven device. It is also not very friendly in a corporate environment so don't expect to see many companies roll it out any time soon.

Just to re-emphasise…. Please, please, PLEASE don't buy XP

    • I prefer W7 too, but your message is opinion and misinformation, and I'm surprised a Systems Administrator is telling everyone that XP is slow. Just like any OS, W7 included, it will run slow as you bog it down with software, but to just make the blanket statement that XP is "slow" is just plain incorrect. Lot of people hang onto XP because they find it fast and reliable, and don't feel they need to upgrade just because MS tells them so.

      • As a system admin in a large corporate environment I tend to agree that people need to move away from xp because of poor threading performance and a super buggy 64bit version.

As far as I'm concerned, the only reason you would buy windows xp now would be if your specific applications or drivers haven't been updated for newer versions, so that means there is still a very small market for it, but it's there.

      • noz, I don't disagree that XP was a great OS in its time, but it is dated, and compared to Win7 it is slow. There is no argument about that. My point was, that if someone needs to buy an OS then don't go for XP.

XP is slow, and if you don't believe me then I encourage you to buy WinXP media, load it on to your existing desktop/laptop and then install the identical applications you have running with Win7. Compare the boot times, login times and general performance of the machine and then tell me XP isn't slow.

I am giving people advice on my experience as a Sys Admin, I wasn't 'telling' anyone to do anything.

No one is saying to people they should upgrade to Win7 if they don't want to or can't afford it, but if you believe it is good advice to tell someone to buy XP over Win7 then you are way off track. As drakarn_123 said, use XP if that is the only OS your apps run on, but if looking to upgrade then go for Win7 or Win8 if you like the look of it.

        • Having upgraded several family and friends older computers onto Windows 7, I have also found it breathed(?) life into machines that were close to end of life. W7 has run faster than xp for me on pc's that i didn't think would run it at all. Yes XP was great (cos vista reminded us all how bad windows can sometimes be), but W7 ran even better. Havent' used w8 so cannot comment there..

  • Window 7 Ultimate still available.

edit: Window 7 appear to be sold out now.
