Just asking your personal experience, is it pretty seamless connecting to carplay/android auto and with the audio output to the stereo?

Always been worried these add-ons are slow or not very user friendly.

    • +3

Best investment Ever. Jump in car and it's paired ready to roll.

      • Did it survive hot summer days under direct sunshine? doesn't get too hot and stops working?

        • Ive had the unit for about 2-3 weeks now. The head unit is good on the sun but the mounting arm has randomly fallen off once or twice in super hot weather from the front window panel.

Other than that the head unit itself seems to operate fine in hot weather.

      • How does it go with pairing multiple phones? Easy enough to select which one you want active?

        • Not sure on this one - have it just for my phone

    • Also would like to know if this can do Android auto wireless? Have seen some units which can do this out of the box as well, but not sure how reliable it is?

      • Yeah android auto wireless via bluetooth. Does this out of the box.

    • +1

friend has one in her car. its a bit janky when she changes a track on spotify it needs to be paused and resumed from the original head unit. but thats probably just the way they have it set up. I didn't install it but im not the type of person who would install something like that so i've never looked into it.

      • Install? Wut

  • Is in the market for a mobile holder for car, mainly want to use it for google maps for driving, is this for that purpose but permanently fixed to dashboard ? It has a bigger screen and would be perfect for my need.

    • +1

Exactly my use case and thats why i bought it.

Interface is a lot better with a bigger screen as opposed to using your phone.

  • +2

The 1 Amazon review is so fake it's laughable.

Keen to hear OP's take on it, I assume it connects to the car's blue tooth or any other bluetooth adapter, and power is via Cigarette plug?

    • Power is via cig plug, connection to vehicle is via "FM transmition or the included AUX cable". From the looks of it the device connects to your mobile via Wi-Fi/BT for wireless AA & CP.

      • Yep correct - power via cigarette plug

Audio with AUX cable or FM transmitter!

I contemplated for so long putting a proper head unit in myself but just couldnt find the time to do it.

Pretty glad i found this cause it was such a breeze to install.

Android Auto connection is seamless as well.

        • How about phone calls? Worried that it uses its own Microphone and probably terrible on the other end.

          • @everydollacounts: Yeah this one has been an interesting one.

My phone is paired to both the head unit and the car.

When i get calls, it rings through the car and utilises the car microphone.

            • @wesleysniper: That's awesome. Does it output music, etc through the car's BT as well, other than phone calls. Got a 2015 Jetta with good quality BT connections through my phone, so would be good to keep utilizing that via the unit.

              • @man2000: No - output for music will be through the AUX cable or the FM transmitter

Both will still be through the car speakers

              • @man2000: I had a similar unit and was pretty happy with performance. I had to return because my car dashboard is in taper shape so didn't fit well. I used for around a week and it worked nicely.
And No, you can't play music from your car audio while connected to this device as it's a phone's limitation. You may look for a wired device where device will run while connected to phone using a cable and your phone's BT is free to connect with your car audio.

I've got one of these in my old commodore, and it works pretty well. Pairing and all that was fine with my iPhone. For the price, it's excellent value compared to getting a $600+ install done of a proper head unit.

  • So it's a mounted unit?

    Interesting

    • +1

Yes, but not a unit you can mount.

      • +1

I’ve been called a unit on occasion, so I wouldn’t rule anything out.

  • +4

I've got an ATOTO P8 and its really good. Paying a bit more gets you reversing camera, rear and front dashcam, and steering wheel controls.

But most importantly it has a really nice matte finish OLED screen. You will be kicking yourself you didn't go for a nice screen with OPs cheaper one.

Its on sale too. usually around the $340 mark for the full package. By the time you add in the cost of a reverse camera and dashcam, this is a good deal at $280…
    https://www.amazon.com.au/ATOTO-Touchscreen-Portable-Wireles…

    • Just a note that it seems to be a QLED LCD, not an OLED screen (though as LCD's typically get brighter than Oled's it's probably for the best in this instance).

Still looks like a good choice, i need to work out if it would fit nicely in my Polo.

    • +1

I bought one in early January when they weren't in the Australian market yet, so I paid ~$240 with discounted eBay gift cards from Atoto China. No complaints except the mounting stuff which seems to have changed since I bought one.

      Notes on it:
      - Wired Android Auto will not have quick charge
      - Using unknown source apks with Android auto will cause inconveniences
      - The microphone is bad as it sits on the opposite side of the driver. (nvm that's just my model it seems like they have moved it to the front of the screen)

Invest in a good one if it's a daily driver. You'll use it every time you drive and you'll wish you did if you don't.

Wouldn't invest in the reverse cam or dashcams unless you need one. Steering wheel controls maybe.

      • Appreciate this list of notes on the unit!
Have you looked into a microphone alternative for calls while driving? External mic/hacks etc?

        • I haven't bothered, as if I talk really loudly, like getting a point across to someone who doesn't understand, it works.

I guess you can redirect the call to your phone, but it would be worse since mine is in my centre console while driving.

I could try plugging in an external mic into the aux port of the phone or the power brick, although I am confident the brick's aux outputs only.

          • @ultracheapweeabookun: Noted, cheers! I believe you're right on the AUX port.
From a previous model, I saw people reporting it splits the mic line between the rear mic port and front built in mic. When they unsoldered/cut out the front mic it improved the quality of the rear input mic a lot.
I never got around to it on my older model

      • Yes there have been revisions to the unit since you bought it.

I actually bought it mainly for the steering wheel controls lol. And the cameras are very good quality. You would easily pay $100 for a decent dashcam so theres that.

        • We have purchased these for very different reasons.

I only purchased this as I'm on my P's so I can't use my phone, and its quick disconnect and reconnect makes it convenient when I get pulled over.

I am very tempted to buy the revisions with more accessories but this one works too well to allow me to do it.

I'll take your word that the cams are good but I would like parking monitoring with a dashcam but I think I'm asking too much of it.

          • @ultracheapweeabookun: I think there is a different 12V plug that enables DVR parking monitoring now. But the accessories on their own are prohibitively expensive.

I think people are better off going for the full kit right away, because adding later isn't a good option.

            • @stumo: I 100% agree with that. The steering controls cost $40, and the cams are $100+ separately. It depends on needs, as people may already have good dash cams.

I cheaped out when I got mine as I wasn't working before. Glad I did, as they made better revisions and they got cheaper.

              • @ultracheapweeabookun: For your older model - assuming it has the white plug on the back - at least there is a kit you can get which is "reasonably" priced, and it adds that missing external mic that you want… https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334829783341

No such kit it available for the newer models with the USB-C plug on the back. And no external mic

                • @stumo: damn, there was a revision before mine? Unfortunately mine has the USB C so nothing for me :(

    • Are the cameras wifi or do you have to string cables? If so it would tip me to a head unit on older cars.

      • cameras are wired and they seem to be proprietary which is a bummer. Nice cameras though.

For wiring just get a long piece of yellowtongue flooring joiner from bunnings. Then jam it above the roof lining from the front door rubber, all the way to the back rubber. It makes it a 10 minute job.

        • do you mean we can't use an existing camera for this?

          • @node modules: most likely, as an adapter is needed to use it in collaboration with the head unit, I can't speak about the cams as I didn't get them.

          • @node modules: Yep existing cameras won't work, at least on the newer units. You have to use their cameras.

  • I picked this up from AliExpress for $130 delivered during a sale.

    https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005411564528.html?spm=a2g…

Wireless Android Auto works well but the microphone for calls is terrible. Otherwise the navigation and audio via 3.5mm jack is great.

    • Looks like they have updated this unit for audio out via BT. Does this have a proprietary connector to the cigarette plug for power, or a USB one. Pics on aliexpress don't show that much detail

      • The one I got was the one to the cigarette lighter. It's super slow charging if you do use it to plug your phone for wired Android Auto.

Interesting, I wonder if it's just a software update? Would you know?

        • @itsmoe It seems like it, according to their blurb.

Starting from May 8, 2023, OBDPEAK T20 will be upgraded again, adding Bluetooth audio transmission function and optimizing the Android Auto interface; Some machines may not have been updated yet, you can contact us to obtain the latest version for a better experience!

          • @man2000: Thank you sir, I will reach out to them to see if they can provide the new software. I have updated it once before but overall happy with the device.

            • @itsmoe: I am looking to buy one. Have a couple questions:
              - Does calling work via the main head unit?
              - Have you tried car play on this unit?
              - Can I charge it via usb?

              • @arzh2: 1- you'll have to change the audio output if you want to do that every time you get a call.
2- haven't tried Apple Car Play as I don't have an iPhone but Android auto works really well.
3- nope you have to use the charger that comes with it. But I'll try again when I get the chance.

                • @itsmoe: Thanks for replying.
1 is a deal breaker for me. Guess I’ll have to wait for a name branded head unit replacement.

                  • @arzh2: Yeh it has it's flaws for sure, I had connected the calls directly to my car as that's all it supports but for some reason it's not working anymore.

Any recommendations for a Android Auto unit that can replace factory unit in my 2013 Toyota Kluger?

Ideally would prefer a bigger screen that can integrate existing factory reverse camera and steering controls.

  • +1

These are dirt cheap on AliExpress. You can even get Ultra wide 10" versions. A 7" is probably about $40 delivered.

    • +1

Bought one on AliExpress earlier this year but they're honestly so trash in terms of quality - you're swapping out quality for price cos it ends up having connection problems and just a trashy piece of plastic. Copped this one on Amazon last month after seeing their ads on Instagram and personally feel like it's worth the price

      • +2

Plus returns to Amazon are hella easy.

      • Thanks for sharing, I assumed they were all from the same Chinese factories ripping off each other's designs. I think I'd still rather take a gamble on a sub $50 one than spend double or more on one from Amazon or elsewhere

    • Any examples of cheap 7"?
I could only find similar prices to this

  • Anyone needed to get an AUX ground connector; some reviews for various units indicate a buzzing noise?

    • Has happened maybe once but not again since then

  • Is the CarPlay performant or bearable? What is the RAM?

    • +1

Cant comment on CarPlay but Android Auto is performant

  • Hi All, Can I pair reverse camera with this Display Unit?

    • +2

So it comes with a reverse camera option if you want it

Assuming if the plugs the same for your current reverse camera you could connect it with this head unit

  • +2

Bought this dashboard + reverse cam last month and honestly has been such a game changer cos installing an actual head unit is too difficult for me. If this can play in a Holden Barina, it can play on anything lol. One small detail is that I wish the volume was a wee bit louder on calls, besides that top investment for me

    • Thanks Cornbread420, This specific product or another similar product with reverse camera?
Also how does this integrate with speakers in your Holder Barina? Or are you referring to the in built speakers in this display unit?

    • if you had to install or connect a reverse camera its probably just as easy to do a proper head unit installation. its an extra 2 plugs.

  • Can green P in Vic use these, specifically for google maps? As oppose to installing a navigation unit.

  • Found this via a quick google search

'However, as an L or P plater you can: Use mounted devices for navigation and playing audio (such as music or podcasts) providing it is set up before a journey commences. For navigation, a safer option is to only use the GPS audio directions and avoid looking at the images on the screen.'

  • Touch screen unresponsive after 1 days. Have to return the unit after 3+ hours of wiring. Quite hit and miss, quality wise.
