    1366 x 768 arghhhh

    • But it's only 14" screen. That should be alright right?
The one thing I don't like is the lack of a SSD.

    IMHO
    13" min 1366 x 768
    14" min 1600 x 900
    15" min 1920 x 1080

      Not always the case tho

    • 1080p is way too small dot pitch for general use in a 15" IMO.

Bah HP laptop wouldnt take it if they where giving it away POS

    The specs looks pretty decent

    Not really, no.
The only thing this has going for it is the 8GB of RAM, which is easily and cheaply implemented into any laptop (and largely useless, considering the laptop's other specs). 'Meh' screen resolution, 2nd Gen i5, 500GB HDD, crappy graphics card.

The Samsung deal for $678 is better, considering a 3rd Gen i7, 750GB HDD, better graphics card, better price…

The real 'deal' (if it can even be called one) is the JB price, not the Officeworks price match.

Yes, Samsung outspecs this laptop but based on aesthetic, I would say this is much better IMO. By the way, this price has been static for a while and the 3rd gen DM4s are starting to come out so this model has room to go further down very soon.

Not to mention that, with the imminent release of W8, a lot of places will be rushing to clear out stock.

        • can't wait!!!!

$600-$700 is about all a laptop with those specs is worth these days. That's not to say you won't see them listed for more. None of the hardware in this is outstanding, or even above average. If it was any other brand I'd say it was an ok deal, but I wouldn't go near Compaq/HP with my money, their warranty service is awful (and I'm an IT tech, fwiw). That i7 Samsung is a much better buy http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80325

  • I like your relevant advice for this newbie!

  • The ONE thing I don't like about the samsung is that it's too big. This is a laptop for my wife and she wants one that is light weight and small enough that she can travel with.

Someone on the Samsung laptop said that you can pay around $40 to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB. Is that DIY or pay JB to do that for you? Thanks in advance.

  • I ended up buying the Samsung with 8gb upgrade for $700 at jb.

  • By the way, Dick Smith was selling the 3rd Gen for $750 (Chatswood Chase)
