  • Great price.

  • Wow, great price.

Now, I just need a convenient oversea trip to make the deal sweeter.

    • Maybe buy x(x>=5) iphone5 then sell them in another country makes your whole trip free?

      • Dont click on this banned iphone5 promo

      • iPhones are generally most expensive in Australia outright.

Its also a samsung so its arguably one of the best built laptops around.

Care to expand? Since when is Samsung synonymous with "highest" build quality? All their products are made out of the same parts and plastic fantastic shell as most on the market

And their firmware support is near non-existent

    • True. In general they are renowned for competitive price and features; not so much for build quality.
In my experience LG is better than samy in build quality

    • +1

Well with the sad state of Windows laptops these days, I think Samsung is pulling out some (relatively) quality stuff. This is a damn good price for the laptop - something similar would've cost ~$1000 6 - 12 months ago.
Looks like everyone is trying to clear out their Windows 7 laptops, ahead of Windows 8.

    • +3

what firmware support do you require for a windows laptop?

      • -2

        i lold

        • +1

What a wonderfully helpful contribution. Seeing as you apparently know better than el_cheapo, you could've just answered the damn question.

        • I'm pretty sure the question was rhetorical. Seems to be over most people's heads.

        • i thought he was trolling

        • -1

he sorta was. I was referring to his question being rhetorical and that most people marked you down because they didn't know this. I marked you up cos other people are stupid.

also the reason why my comment was under your comment instead of the guy that I ACTUALLY replied to (the guy just above me) is because this site does that for some weird reason. probably takes like 2 lines of code to fix.

      • +1

bios firmware… generally fixes issues like incompatibility with graphics cards or is upgraded to allow the newer CPUs. Generally though most firmware upgrades are just for compatibility with hard drives.

  • +1

    Does this laptop have USB3?

  • What's the screen resolution ?

    • +4

      Standard 15.6 in notebook resolution….(1366 x 768)

      • the resolution kills it as a deal, for me, at least

        • It only having HDMI, DVI and VGA and no express card slot kills it for me. I don't use a laptop's screen (at home) I connect it to external screens (2x27").

Actually, does anyone know what the max resolution that the DVI and VGA ports are capable of?

        • +7

Its $600, man! You can't really expect 1920 x 1080 on the average ~$1000 laptop, let alone this.
(Although I do agree, FHD would be very nice indeed)

        • +7

It's funny how they can produce a tablet with a 2048×1536 Retina Display and fit it all in a 10 inch screen and sell it for $300.

Yet, just to get 1080p resolution in a 15.6 inch form factor you have to shell out a minimum of $1000.

Anyone else notice the trend? Your tablet PC has a higher resolution than your laptop… which doesn't make sense.

        • You're right Scrimshaw, I smell something fishy going on here.

        • Tablets need a higher resolution, as you're likely to hold it closer to your face, than you would a 15" laptop (and therefore see more individual pixels at a low resolution).

        • 1366*768 is already fairly low resolution. At about arms length the dot pitch and individual pixels are very visible on a screen higher than 13 inches.

        • +1

because you dont sell 40million of one particular 15" laptop model to have the economy of scale and buying power

        • VGA is an analog signal so doesn't have a fixed limit. With a good quality shielded cable it can go beyond HD: 2048x1536.

DVI is a digital signal so the same would look better on a monitor because there is no quality loss (analog vs. digital).

In practical terms Full HD should be very close or identical on both types of connectors.

My el-cheapo HP with HDMI out puts out a great image to external monitors @ full HD.

        • All-in-one systems seem to be taking over the market. Laptops belong to a bygone era now, like the PS3 or Xbox360.

In another year or two I would expect the new super smart phones which can be inserted into empty shells or docking stations will begin their rise to power.

    • More than $300 off Bing Lee's! Great price.

  • It seems that the reason it's at this price is because of the 15% off computers currently running… too bad that Officeworks doesn't stock the exacty same model.

    • Also though, is this graphics card good enough to play Diablo III on decent settings?

      • After a quick look around, it would seem you'd be getting about 30FPS at medium to low settings on the 7670M…
        Take that as you will.

      • +2

cheaper to go integrated gfx + vidock

        • So hard to find a current gen laptop with an express card slot though :(

      • Yes, but why would you want too ….. Diablo III? Damnit, get Borderlands II or Torchlight II instead.

  • Shouldn't this be classified as part of the JB Hi Fi deal, currently going?

  • Also found this on the Dell Website, for an InspironR Special edition - is this worth the extra $121? It's currently $899 for a slightly less powerful CPU, double RAM, double graphics RAM, bigger hard drive, and backlit keyboard?

Better/double ram & graphics, 33% larger HDD and backlit keyboard for $121? I would say so. But you might want to consider the shipping as well.

    • +2

Hmm - pretty sure Dell is always free shipping?

      • Oh thats good to know, its been a while since we got a dell. For some reason whenever i need a new laptop i keep finding higher spec HP's for a good price.

        • it's assumed all HP's are of lower build quality but it only really depends on what purpose you use it for and how often you're moving it around and stuff. I've got a HP that's been solid for years but on the same token I use to have one that I'd take with me out of the house every day and it only lasted a year.

    • +2

      899-678=221

    • Nice specs but the total is wrong.
      $899-$678 = $221

  • +1

I'm totally against Samsung, their build quality and then support (or lack of). So the brand ruins this deal for me

    • +2

They have great support for fridges, washing machines and phones so i dont know why dont do the same for their laptops. They should pick up their game.

      • +2

No they do not. I had a twin door fridge from samsung break down 1 and a half month over the 2 year warranty and they do not give a damn. Even escalation to a senior manager did nothing to help. Also had a samsung slider phone when they were new years ago and that thing and a sliding mechanism failure right from new and samsung never got it fixed properly nor would they change to a new one for me. So please dont tell me they have good support.

For computers I would gladly stick to a jap company or any of the "old" mobs. Lenovo, Dell, Acer, Toshiba, HP would all be better

        • +1

hello, I thought there's a consumer protection law here in Australia which protects us by giving assurance products wont break down within "expected usage period"?

I surely will expect a quality brand name fridge to work for at least 5 years.

Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

        • +1

If it broke down outside warranty, they are no longer obliged to give a damn, are they?

        • +1

God damn, that's sad. Seems like you got a lousy operator. When my fridge's buttons started making weird noises at random, they sent someone within a few days, and that was 2 months after the warrenty was over. Though to be fair, i did tell the operator that it'd been going on for half a year but got worse that week. Never had a problem, with the TV, sound system or phone.
As for computers, you're probably right. The jap companies tend to have better quality, though more and more of them keep outsourcing to china.

        • Its what you'd expect and what ACA or TT would say but when it comes down to it, its really not you who decides the warranty approval. I used to trust samsung because all the sales people from jb would say they have one at home and go on about how good they are.

Now that I know that theres quite a high defect rate, they obviously haven't got good enough engineers. I'd still see this brand as inferior to most of the more established brands

edit: I was replying to sakayo

        • +2

"If it broke down outside warranty, they are no longer obliged to give a damn, are they?"

That's certainly not always true. They may well be liable to repair/replace the item well beyond the 'announced' warranty period, if it's reasonable to expect that the item would last longer. e.g, if you buy a $5000 TV it would be reasonable to expect it would last 4-5 years, so if it fails say 1 month outside of a 36 month warranty you'd absolutely have grounds under Australian consumer law to get them to fix the problem. This article sort of goes over it quickly while referencing the actual ACCC texts.

          http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/08/how-to-get-apple-to-rep…

Although it's focused on iphones it applies to very nearly everything sold in Australia. It's definitely worth knowing this stuff as it could have saved fuzor his fridge had he known it at the time.

        • This is a new and very "untested" law.

      • +1

They have shocking support. We had a 46" LCD TV that died about 3 months old. Instead of just getting someone to look at it, they asked my wife to try all sorts of things, via a dozen or so phone calls over a period of two weeks. One of their service people was so rude an unhelpful he had her in tears.

Asking to escalate the issue met with firm resistance. We eventually returned it to JB, who swapped it for a Panasonic, best move we ever made. If you Google Samsung warranty service you'll see some absolute horror stories. They are not afraid to use substandard componentry in order to shave a few dollars off.

    • +1

For me they have had very good support. Fixed my TV 3 time no questions asked, and the 3rd time was out of warranty (4 years after purchase).

The fact that my TV broke 3 times is a little troubling though.

    • I have a Samsung phone, TV and surround sound system, and everything works just fine, and has quite nice build quality.

  • Entertainment card members can get 5% off JB Hi-Fi gift cards as well:
    http://ebm.cheetahmail.com/c/tag/hBQJFBrB8QikZB8tZIlNsgsSIGl…

Not sure how long this deal goes for but it does take about a week for the gift cards to arrive in the mail, so that's something to consider.

  • +2

I've had poor experiences with Samsung TV, bluray fridge. I would avoid their stuff at all costs except for their phones. Dell
    laptops aren't much better.

    • +12

Where do I purchase this bluray fridge you speak of?

      • +1

        Probably in Japan only.

    • +5

do u get 1080p quality sandwiches with Samsung's bluray fridge?

  • My boss just messaged me to say they sold him one in-store for $645 (cash). Said they had several in stock (World Square Sydney).

  • +3

For those whinging that for $645 it doesn't include a FHD IPS display, this thing would make a great HTPC and home server (with an external USB HDD). Wouldn't use much power even if you left it on 24/7. It would be hard to build an i7 home server with all these bells and whistles for under $1,000. It even has mediocre dedicated graphics.

On another note, whenever JB or DSE have a sale, HN usually tries to spoil the party by having their own bargain sale. Any news of a HN computer sale this weekend?

    • with the addition that laptop i7 != desktop i7 you raise a valid point.

    • That's exactly what I'm shopping for, but I have tested this one and found it lacking.

I currently use a Toshiba, which is fantastic, but lacks the necessary USB3 ports for my external HDD's. I can list the important components I require for a HTPC but instead will simply tell you some I found missing.

Blu-Ray; small thing but very important.
HDMI-CEC; If this unit was capable, I could not get it working.

Between myself and the store person, we had a crappy time trying to get a copy of Pioneer One going. Would not even put through anything other than stereo sound.

When it comes to laptops, brand really counts I think and you can't beat ones like Alienware/dell, Toshiba, Asus.

  • grrr…

I just bought an Acer V3 (i5 cpu, 8gb ram, GT640) from centrecom for $648

hopefully better video card and 8gb ram though. but re-sell value of an i7 would be better than i5 i'm guessing.

  • Does any site bother to -compare- performance of whole systems?

If so, where… & how does this Samsung i7 compare?

Surely, some i7's are faster than others, & the difference affects value…

  • I'm sure the performance of this is fine. I went to check it out yesterday and found that the build quality wasn't up to par and the touchpad was really lacking

  • -1

    +1

If it had better video graphics I'd jump on it but great price nonetheless!

I maye just jump on it anyway. Not on the actual computer but at the JB Hifi sales rep.

  • Might be worth checking out what HN has to offer in response to the JBHF deal
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/promos/spring-sellabration?in…

  • I just got mine for $645 for asking for a better price

  • Just bought one of these - seems pretty decent for the price. The trackpad is pretty bloody average though.

First order of business is to get rid of Windows. Bleuch.

  • Just got one of these , not to bad for the price.
upgraded to 8gig ram and SSD so runs very well :)

  • +1

I went in to JB today but they wouldn't budge on the Samsung price so I ended up getting one of these
    http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Product.aspx
    for $739
In comparison I had to pay about $75 extra and sacrifice the i7 for an i5 but the pluses are a much better build, much better audio, nice headphones, and slightly better graphics.
The Samsung is the most awesomely powerful machine for the price but I decided to get something a bit better rounded.

  • +1

http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80398 (Am I allowed to post it here?) If not, feel free to smack me. However, if someone wants to buy this laptop and you're in Brisbane I can meet you instore to make your whole bargain buying experience a much better one :p

  • Got one today added extra 4GB RAM for $40
Nice Laptop for this price, fits my requirements.

  • Doubling the RAM more cost-effectively:

Someone seems to have paid $40 [for a 2nd 4gb module] to do this.

    MSY has "8gb 1600 kits" from $44 - $50, suggesting that,

…eg, if a friend got this deal lappie & wanted 8gb upgrade,
    one could:

    • pay between $44 & $50 for a kit
    • use kit to replace the Samsung 4gb module
    • sell the Samsung 4gb module for ~$40
    • PROFIT (or at least): pay $4 - $10 for their own 8gb upgrade

How hard is it to open / upgrade / close this laptop,
ie, while keeping it looking "as new"?

    (For netbooks, we've -typically- found
ASUS's easier than Acer's to double RAM in)

  • Also worth mentioning that JB Hi-Fi had an additional 15% off laptops at Pacific Fair at the Gold Coast.. that was yesterday

  • U meant JB can help you upgrade this to 8GB for just $40?

  • went into Harvey Norman (HN) with this deal, they gave me the same model , same price with a free Belkin sling bag. Anyone want an AMD quad core A6 that I bought less than 1 month ago? lol

    • how much?

      • AMD Quadcore A6-3410MX @ 1.6GHz
        with Radion HD Graphics
        750 GB SATA
        8GB DDR 3 Ram
        (dual graphic)
        AMD Radeon HF 6470
        AMD Radeon(TM) HD 6520G
        with 11 month limited warranty.

I will include Window 8 Release Preview and office 2007.

I will let it go for $520, let me know if interested.

  • From the people who have bought this PC , does it heat up while playing 1080p videos on a LCD tv?

Also how loud does the fan get? Thanks

    • heat; Was fine, heats up as per usual.

Fan; Would cut in/out. was not excessive but it was noticeable at the volume I was trying.

I should mention that the 1080p I attempted to play, once I got it working, stuttered & buffered for the firt 5 mins till I changed to a 720p which it played fine.

  • Awesome laptop. Got it for $645 this morning at JB.

    Really happy with it!

    Thanks OP

  • +1

Awesome laptop. Got it for $700 with 8GB Ram this afternoon at JB.

    Really happy with it!

    Thanks OP

  • Has anyone purchased or updated RAM themselves for this lappy yet?

If so, what did you get? how much?

    looking at MSY, Kingston - 1 x 4GB DDR3 1600MHz for $20, pretty sure that's the correct RAM?

  • +1

Yes upgraded the ram , $22 for 4gig 1600 ddr3 from MSY - hynix OEM stuff

    • Thanks mate!

    • Cheap and effective upgrade.
Just check what RAM module you've got first.
A lot of laptops tend to have Hynix RAM.
On top of that I'd recommend getting an SSD or a Momentus XT 750GB hybrid drive.

  • dont you have to make sure that those RAMS are compatible?

its always disastrous to have different RAMS.. and do they come in 1x4G or 2x2G?

also i ran the windows exp index and the 5.6 constraint was the GPU…. so does increasing RAM really help? might wanna re-run the index and see if it changes much…

  • Anyone know what is the max ram this laptop can take ? 16GB ? or only 8 GB max?

    • 8GB max

      • Thanks for the reply Millzy!

I actually rang Samsung up they say theoretically it can take up to 32GB, but because of the 1600 MHZ frequency , the max 1 slot DDR3 laptop ram on 1600 MHZ is 4GB, so far.
