Have these from previous deals. They work very well. I’m tempted to get some more…

Alternatively if you don’t want 4, they also have the 2 pack discounted as well

  • +1

    Can confirm it works.
The lowest cost breakdown it will give you is per day, or how much you've spent so far that day.

  • +15

These work great. I just wish it’s not physically this big as it takes up 2 spaces when plugged in.

    • +6

Bloody hell.. me too. They’re just so damn big. You can’t plug anything into the outlet next to it

      • +7

Yeah, why do they design them like that ?
They could just make them "taller"

    • +4

I've got lots of these (and the meross globes too). What I've done where I need to use only one slot is buy the Bunnings $1 extension cords.

    • I got a couple of the Crest brand from the Big W deal a while ago. They only take up one slot. By far the smallest and best.

      • I hadn't heard of them, do they support Google Home? I quite like the voice control the Meross gives me for devices plugged into them.

    • me three… Now I need to stack it on an Angled Double Adaptor …

  • +3

For the interested Apple users, these aren’t the HomeKit versions, they are $20 more.

    • +3

Not if you have homebridge ;)

      • oh wow never knew such a thing exsited thanks!

      • I feel like I am too dumb to figure this out. Could you explain like I am 5 years old?

        • A device act as a bridge for smart home items to work with Apple HomeKit platform. Most smart home devices are only compatible with Android.

      • As a homebridge user, I’d rather pay $3 extra per plug for the HK version than spend time debugging 🙃

        • I’ve never had an issue with home bridge (via home assistant) to be honest.

But yes depending on your strategy just go for the HK version.
Most of my automations are done in home assistant

  • Any recommendations on plugs with real time or hourly energy monitors?

    • +4

These do that quite well although the accumulated usage in kWh doesn’t show in home assistant (only the current power).
But it shows in the Meross app just fine.. only complaint is they are too damn big by far.
I wish I could easily by more of the Aqara/Lumi Zigbee plug but they appear to be sold out

      • Do they need any special effort to get going in Home Assistant or do they work out of the box?

      • If you're after Zigbee, check out these ones. I've got a few and just ordered some more. Prices fluctuate up and down all the time. With coupons I've got 3 of them for $27 delivered, ordered just a few days ago.

        • Thanks I think I might have ordered one or two to try recently.
I think the plug might be obnoxiously big too? (Like the Meross)

          • +1

@Commodore64: Just a tad too wide for most power boards. I've measured them as 48mm square.

        • Do you need the zigbee hub for these? Could i just add them to a grid connect setup?

          • @jtrappett: Yes, zigbee devices need a hub.

Well worth it for me though, power consumption of zigbee is a lot lower than devices with Wifi.

And with mesh technology part of the design, they work a lot further away than Wifi. Every mains connected zigbee device works as a repeater that extends range and reliability of the overall network.

        • @team teri: Those Aliexpress Zigbee plugs don't mention anything about "Energy Monitoring" like the Meross ones (which is a key function). Is that correct?

      • +1

I have these showing accumulated total in Homeassistant. One needs to add the available "energy" sensor as a Riemann sensor. One can then monitor it. In my case added the energy sensor to Energy as source and also as an individual item. Allows me to track Fridge power, when condensor turns on/off etc. Works great.

    • +2

I use these with homeassistant for monitoring every 30s

    • Sweet, will give the 2 pack a go

  • These are great but few thoughts - they are very wide so can only plug one adapter to double wall outlet, they also stick out a lot.

If you buy multiple of them (eg I bought 12) the app does not monitor total usage which is annoying, you have to go into each one of them to see usage and history, would be handy if the app combined data from each device.

    • -1

If only there was something you could integrate IOT devices into and show custom reporting and data..
Oh wait, home assistant can do it.
Of course Meriss should do this out of the box.
I’m also not seeing the total kWh in HA either yet.
I’ll try the Meross local plugin instead next

  • +5

I use these with home assistant to send a notification to our phones when the washer or dryer are done.

    • I bought these for this purpose but gave up trying to implement it into HA. Is there a guide around?

      • +8

No guide but the way I did it. I set up two automations.

        1. https://i.imgur.com/0x5jxbL.png
The first one waits till it detects more than 60W on the dryer for one minute. If it detects that it assumes that the dryer is running. If it detects it to be running it enables the second automation (it is disabled by default)

        2. https://i.imgur.com/X6pnUvh.png
So now that this automation is enabled it checks and waits until the power utilisation is below 10W for more than 5 minutes. When that's the case it sends a notification to my phone and my wifes and then disables itself.

You may need to tweak the wattage for each trigger and the time before it triggers to stop any false positives but I've had it running for the past 6 months on both my washer and dryer and it's been 100% accurate.

        Hope that helps

        • +1

Huh interesting.. wouldn’t different spin or rinse cycles potentially confuse this?
Very clever though, I was considering using an ESP32 to listen out for the done beep using tensor light

          • +1

@Commodore64: Nah it works fine. It might be that I use the average over a period of time? I can’t remember. Or it may just be that when they are truly finished the power draw is so low it’s easy to distinguish. But I’ve yet to have a false positive on either washer and dryer and it’s been half a year.

I bought a bunch of vibration sensors, door sensors etc to use an esp32 but this was a much easier option.

        • Awesome! Yeah I’ll give it another go.

        • I confirm this works and it can be done even easier by not having the first automation at all. I just set the second automation to be under 2W and it works every time. I used 5 mins for mine too. There is really no need to enable the second automation, it can be active all the time.

      • +4

Not sure if you have seen HomeAssistant Blueprints? This exist to help with exactly this! Here’s the blueprint I am using for this automation:
        https://community.home-assistant.io/t/notify-or-do-something…

Here’s the Blueprint exchange where you can find others if this one isn’t suitable for you:
        https://community.home-assistant.io/c/blueprints-exchange/53…

        • Nope, I tried using ChatGPT which worked for everything except setting up these.
I’ll have a look at blueprints as well. Tnx

        • +1

I tried that blueprint with the Meross plug and it worked perfectly - thanks!

    • That's a big brain move

      • +7

No the big brain move was setting the washing done notification to send 10 minutes earlier to my wife’s phone and then following up on my phone after.

        • +1

          lmao that's brilliant

    • +1

My (front loader) washing machine trips these plugs when first starting which is a pain. Old kogan ones are fine. My guess is it spikes beyond the 2400w threshold and turns them off. Shame as great plugs otherwise.

  • +3

I wouldn't really recommend these models, they tend to drop out every now and then, I had to manually restart them every single time. It's also quite bulky.

    • I have not noticed this as a problem with my home network after running them for over 6 months

      • maybe I got the bad batch :(

        • +1

maybe router/wifi congestion issue, try changing channels

        • +1

Have you updated to the latest software? I had that problem in the past but an update fixed it

  • +3

I got these and had to return them because of their size. I ended up with Arlec ones from Bunnings which stay within a single plug width.

  • +6

I've got a fleet of these at home to run garden lights in various areas of the garden including a back shed which is literally 20-30m from the nearest wifi mesh point. They are great for the price, yes they are bulky but this can be addressed pretty easily by mounting them on a $2 double adapter if this an issue. They are also great for Xmas light displays. Effectively around $12 each I think they are superb. Only downside is if you use them to run unnecessary devices (ie my garden lights) you have the joy of seeing exactly how much it costs you to run your unnecessary items.

    • +2

they are bulky but this can be addressed pretty easily by mounting them on a $2 double adapter

      That makes them bulkier.

      • +5

Bulky up top is not the same as bulky at the waist line :)

  • Big w has their Crest smart plus for half price at $7.50 each. Anyone used them before?

  • Are these better than the crest ones that were listed here a couple months ago?

  • Can i use these to alarm if i loose power to my freezer? Or do they need power to report home?

    • Perhaps you can get an alert one you just lose them. But I don't think that's out of the box.

    • They do need power to report home, but if it's offline that's a pretty good hint that something is wrong with your power outlet and therefore your freezer.

    • If they work with smartlife/tuya you can get notified if the plug itself goes offline…..but if there's no power to the freezer you've probably tripped the circuit or your powers out completely. Doesn't really sound practical.

You'd be better off getting a wireless temperature monitor (the bt / rf ones) along with the control box that connects to wifi (is it called zigbee?). Just get it to notify you when the temp drops below a certain level.

You can grab alll this kinda stuff from aliexpress quite cheap, I like the tuya gear personally.

  • +2

2 Pack that supports Apple Homekit as well for $31.50 https://amzn.asia/d/8VH6Kj4

  • +2

my one main grudge with this is that the live power usage in the app doesn't update/refresh itself every second or two for example. It only shows you the power draw at the time you tap on the plug in the app to view it. To have it update each time, you have to pull down on the page and ask it to refresh.

    • agree

If you just need one, binglee on ebay has energy monitoring smart plugs for $11

I bought 10 of these but I ended up returning all of them. They kept forgetting the wifi and you have to do a full reset to program them again. One of them just refused to be programmed at all after it forgot the first time. Googling at this point showed lots of people with similar issues. On top of that I had to buy loads of power boards.

I've now got lots of TP-Link P110 monitors. They fit in single sockets and they don't keep breaking. They work out a little dearer but I got good deals from JB and they work great.

    • I never had this issue. Though I do find they like to update a lot, making them momentarily unavailable.

  • I have these but they're too chunky.
Unfortunately the Crest ones from Big W have been OOS for quite a while.

  • Huge as plugs that takes up adjacent powerpoints. No from me.

  • +1

Something that might be useful is to buy wide spaced outlet powerboard with wall mount from Bunnings. Useful not just for these but other wide adaptors/plugs

  • Why do I need to know how much usage?
not like ika finnna much different

    • +2

I bought this and found out that my fridge uses way more electricity than indicated by the 2.5 star rating.

I also found out that the temperature control on the fridge is mislabelled - when I set the temperature setting to high, it is actually the reverse and the temperature is low and is using more power.

  • It's in the specs, which I didn't read, but they'll only work on standard 10amp sockets. I tested one on my 15amp box aircon and it immediately overloaded.

  • As others have said, this is too big and you can only use one plug on dual outlets if you're using this. If that's an issue, Arlec plugs from bunnings works just fine.

  • I’ve bought 10 of these over the last couple of years for use with home assistant. They were great for a while but 5 of them stopped working and ended up in the bin. Meross refunded me for two of them.
I use Kasa or Tapo now, none of which have failed yet.

  • I bought 2 of these from a previous deal, unfortunately both failed within 12 months, I opted for a replacement on the first failure, but the second time I went back to buying TPLink which I already have two of and are still going strong. No idea if I’ve just been unlucky, but thought I would add my personal experience as a data point.

  • Can these run tasmota firmware?

  • +1

I bought one recently and use it to trickle feed our car. There is a function to add a cost, but I haven’t bothered. It logs power consumption and allows you to export as Excel, which is handy.

We have our car trickle charge through it overnight, so the reporting lets me know how much power is going into the car (so I can apportion that money as fuel instead of household electricity). But it’s also hooked into home assistant, so when the energy rates go high, it’ll turn it off automatically and then turn back on once they come back down. It works pretty well. I’m happy with it.
