6W TDP CPU. Amazing efficiency and performance for the dollars.

    • The pentium version with 1x performane core on top, double the gpu units and more enterprise features is even better for barely more tdp. 8505 i think?

      • There aren't many options with that chip yet.

  • Not sure what the difference is but same specs for lower price? $265.20 (Prime Exclusive Deal)

The one in OP has 2x 2.5Gbe ports compare to only 1 in your link.
So in case one wants to run the machine as a router (pfSense, opnSense), 2 ethernet ports can easily be used as a WAN and LAN port instead of "router on the stick" configuration like the single port one (also need another managed switch for that).

I've always wondered what people use this for. Lots of thinkcenters on ebay going for $200-300 with i5 8500's in them or better, and they offer better remote management tools as well, especially if they have vpro. Surely it's not just because of efficiency, right?

    • retro Game console emulators.

      • is the iGPU in the N100 that much better than the ones found in the i5 8500 though?

        • N95 is faster than n100 and has higher tdp

    • It's rare that former office PCs have dual ethernet. If you're looking for a power efficient router/firewall, this is overkill but will do whatever you throw at it.

    • Different use cases but you can run dockers with linux/unraid server and setup plex, home assistant, different arr* etc. Great little media server for homelab. Dual 2.5g NIC is great. Don't get that in most of the regular pcs out there. Plus quite efficient for what it can do.

Slap in a 2/4tb ssd in nice server sitting next to your router.

I am in thinking of moving some of my dockers to this soon. Want to reduce power consumption on my unraid server and isolate media services and data services on unraid.

The igpu is quite good on this for plex transcode.

Just an example of similar board of what you can do

      • This is exactly what I’m doing. Taking unraid server down from 24/7 and run key dockers/vm on this.

        • On that topic. How do you start unraid without any hdd? Something I don't know yet. A usb drive? As ssd are not supported in an array.

          • @ace310: There is space for a 2.5” sata with the nvme.

Unraid boots from usb to ram. Also USB drives.

Possibly zfs setup with snapshots to main server when it’s on.

I have a spare Unraid licence and playing with Proxmox and others, either way will be looking at pf/opnsense, HA vm, UniFi controller and maybe Pi-hole. Should have a lot up it’s sleeve.

            • @RedFoxAU: Thanks. Will get the usb drive as the array drive. Yes I know about sata port but don't need it for know. I already have my main unraid server for storage so will be using this only for dockers and VMs.

              • @ace310: Not sure from memory if you can add the usb drive as an array, but unassigned drives plugin should do the trick. I’d even suggest just running a zfs on the nvme for docker and vm and back up snapshots to your server. Check space invaider one on youtube.

    • I bought an Optiplex with an 8500t, 16GB RAM and 500GB ssd for $250 to play around with proxmox. It hasn't arrived yet, Aussie Post delays.

Wondering if this would have been a better option.

The 8500t is 6 core though and I can upgrade the ram to 64GB if required.

The dual nics would be nice though. I'm going to look at adding a second to the Optiplex

      • Do you link to the one you bought?

        • As I said, it hasn't arrived yet. It was supposed to be ebay plus express posy 1-2 days and it got lost of delayed or something, so I don't have it yet. The original ETA was 4/10, still waiting!
