OzBargain Gang Sign

Ever wondered how I can recognise a fellow ozbargainer in the shopping mall, on the street or at school/work? You don't want to make a scene "hey, do you happen to be that guy on OzBargain?!!" and prefer something more discreet. So here we have it — OzBargain gang signs — for the keen members here to identify their affiliation (when they are all queueing up for the same bargain together). MS Paint here showing how it is done:

OzBargain Gang Sign

It spells out O Z B just in case you can't recognise it. Or in animated GIF:

So, what are the uses of the OzBargain gang sign?

  • Get to know other ozbargainers IRL.
  • Show your dominance at the local supermarket.
  • Terrorise sales staff at GH's electrical stores.
  • Tell the other (at-fault) motorist at the traffic accident, that "this will be reported & discussed on OzBargain"

Here I have assembled some young ozbargainers from UNSW for some demonstration right in front of the Scientia building:

Competition

Now we come to the actual competition part. Being a proud ozbargainer, here's your chance to perform the OzBargain gang sign. You can do it by yourself at home. Or do it with your friends at the local shops, department stores, shopping centres, on the public transport, at your school or at work, or next to some other famous people who aren't aware of OzBargain… Be creative and entertaining, and send your entry in either photo or video format.

Found the bargain

  • Your submission needs to be uploaded to a media hosting site (for example, OzBargain file uploader, imgur, YouTube, TikTok, etc)
  • Post the link to your submission as a comment in this post.

OzBargain moderators will go through each submission and give a score. The average score from all OzBargain moderators will be used to figure out the winners. There will be 13 winners with total prize of $2,500 in either digital gift cards or bank transfer (top 3 only).

  • 1st prize: $600
  • 2nd prize: $500
  • 3rd prize: $400
  • 10x honourable mentions: $100

Moreover, each of the prize winners will win one of our latest T-shirts "Bikies" in cobalt blue, as we all know that "Bikies" is often the obvious choice for the forum polls.

I suspect some don't read the requirement of the competition & would have their entries disqualified.

    • +2

That's very clever. One handed beats doing a whole performance.

I did just realise that the comp is to re-create the official 3-gesture sign FYI. A few posts above you the Site Admin saysa few entries will be disqualified. :(

      • +5

Looking at all the entries so far (including mine), no one has actually gotten them correct as per the instructions. Haha!

Also - my own slight variation
        - to make it more unique
        - the Z more pronounced, and
        - help stabilise hand in this position to assist whilst queuing

        • +2

Love it! Looks a bit suss though ☺️

      • +3

That's what I was also trying to get clarification on,
        when I asked earlier
        ie.
is it our creativity in displaying OzB , in our own hand-gestures ?
        or
is it just the different ways to display the pre-set hand-gestures ?

        • no creativity my dear

Imagine falling in love with your other half because of our love for Ozb, then on the day of the wedding the bridal party makes these gang signs in most of your photos so that when you look back on it, you'll never forget the reason you fell in love..
    https://imgur.com/BzIRt87

  • +1

It is the pre-set hand gestures that has already been come up with.
With all due respect, I can understand why previous commentators have mentioned it is dorky/cringy, given that 3 people were part of the demonstration to spell out each letter. This may seem embarrassing for some to pull it off in a public place, hence why in the space of a week there's only been a handful of entries (every qualified entry is going to win something by the looks of it)
I reckon holding up a single/double handed stationary gesture is more discreet and people would be more comfortable putting it into practice.
Maybe Scotty can consider to bend the competition rules? Or is it back to the drawing board for my entry?

  • +2

Dropped a Gang sign, now posting this post via prison cell. They thought I was sending a signal to the youth gang.

  • The middle guy's fingers are made for that Z! So crisp.

  • +5

I'm confused about the hand signs as there's discrepancies between the MS Paint version, the GIF version, and the example photo.

MS Paint version shows it from the signmaker's POV, with all 3 letters appearing the right way round to the signmaker (but will be flipped left to right when viewed by other people)

    • O: thumbs on the bottom
    • Z: right hand on top
    • B: left palm pointing up

GIF shows it from the viewer's POV, with O and B appearing the right way round for the viewer but the Z is reversed

    • O: thumbs on the bottom
    • Z: right hand on top
    • B: right palm pointing up

Photo shows it from the viewer's POV, with all 3 letters appearing the right way round for the viewer

    • O: thumbs on top
    • Z: left hand on top
    • B: right palm pointing up

So none of the letters are done the same way across all 3 explainer images. How do we know which is the official/correct way to sign?

Although the GIF has all 3 letters signed in a way that makes up the majority (2 out of 3, bolded) case from the 3 examples, I don't think it can be regarded as correct given the Z and B are facing different ways. The signs should either be entirely correct orientation when viewed by the signmaker (as per MS Paint), OR be entirely correct orientation when viewed by the viewer (as per photo).

    • +1

entirely correct orientation when viewed by the viewer

Because we want to see the OZB on the submission. The GIF was wrong (rush job taken the night before I posted the comp, don't have time to redo it).

      • +1

Ok so go with the photo version. Does it matter if the O is thumbs on top or thumbs on bottom?

        • +2

          It does not matter.

    My (updated) Entry: https://youtu.be/dkWJI2bzIQI?si=poUUHGEmUWcFSVLw

Fellow Gang Members, please visit me in my backyard for the unoffical OZB Gang HQ, filled with 100% OzB Flex!

The HZ is a (relatively) sturdy $19.99 Capri Sun Shelter (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/757842)

Within the HQ is the Eubie gang atire, which can only be purchased when 88% off (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/757817)

The aspirant to the HQ is wearing the formal $40 Oodie initiation robe (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/793018)

We have the following OZB flex to prepare tasty treats:

    $29 Kenwood Blend X-Classic Blender (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/344347), $29 Soda Stream Spirit (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/625966), $89 Philip's Air fryer (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/787567),

However, since we are Ozbargainers, we will probably just live off coles baked beans and Mutti Pulpa (visit https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/654144 if you don't know what I am talking about and find the comment from Greem85) and T2 Tea (bought with Cashback from CashRewards)

We can keep our gang HQ sparkling clean (so clean even JV will approve) with the following OZB flex:

    $2 Greenleaf Watering Can (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/707643), $11 Tradies Mate Broom (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/801343), $599 Dyson V10 Absolute (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/386244), $130 Xiaomi Air Purifier (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/382678), and $255 Daikon Air Purifier (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/760706).

I have generic Kogan sheets if anyone wants to stay the night and spare Canningvale towels. Feel free to listen to some tunes with my $95 Bose from JB Hi-Fi (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/589616). Wingspan (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/665757) remains unopened from the $49 Kmart deal so come along and lets have a game!

As we are not connected to the mains, please bring your Eneloops to help out.

May the Bargains Be With Us All.

Looking forward to you visiting soon!

  • Just a reminder that the competition closes at midnight AEDT tonight — 7 hours to go!

  • Scotty,
How strict are you on how a 'Z' is made?
The instructions have two 'V' symbols made from four fingers, but it seems that there is a strong temptation to use thumbs to connect the hands in various ways.
I was thinking that connecting two thumbs (tip to tip) also looks quite good since thumbs are shorter than fingers, so the 'Z' ends up with the top and bottom beams more on top of each other. What do you think?

    • If you looked at other entries there was one that used thumbs — I'm fine with that.
