Wingspan Board Game $49 @ Kmart

2650

Just bought from this deal for 67 :-(

Starts Thursday.

Enjoy.

Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from designer Elizabeth Hargrave and Stonemaier Games. It is the winner of the prestigious 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres award.

You are bird enthusiasts - researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors -seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:

Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colours
Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them
The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

If you enjoy Terraforming Mars and Gizmos, we think this game will take flight at your table.

      It's actually not too bad.

    • +8

The rulebook will melt your brain but it is relatively simple once you start playing. One terrific thing they offer is a specific setup of the "random" cards for your first session to help you grasp the rules a little easier.

      • +1

Agreed. But the actual gameplay is pretty easy once you've played a round or two.

      • Coming from Gloomhaven to this was alot easier

        • And this takes 99.9885844% less time to play (2 hours vs 2 years)

    • +12

The best way to learn new boardgames is to watch a YouTube video of it. There are some excellent tutorials available, and it's a great way to easily slide into gameplay.

      • +9

        "Hi! I'm Rodney Smith."

      • +1

The best way to learn this particular game is with the swift start pack. Made learning a whole lot easier.

Don't know if this Kmart version comes with it

    • +2

I'm someone who also skips complicated games. Scythe is a game that melted my brain (I only played it once) and I will never play it again.

But Wingspan - I'd definitely play again. Helps to have someone explain the rules to you, which makes it much easier to learn. Game play itself is relatively easy. Plus it's got cute birds!

  • Crap I bought it too at $67….. Can I refund from Amazon?

    • I'm trying their customer service, will update

      • Thanks. I was going to contact their customer service too…

        • There should be option to cancel the order in the purchase "details"

        • Yes, as others suggested, they do not price match other retailers but were happy to cancel. Decided not to cancel (yet). If I can get my hands on the Kmart one, I'll return amazon's copy.

    • +27

I will answer this for you now.
      - Amazon does not price match
      - If the order is not yet sent you can can cancel the order
      - If the order is already sent you can send it back for a refund.

      • +4

To add, the refund option for 'better price available elsewhere' should be free. Some other choices can sometimes incur a return fee.

        • I think I tried this the other day and there was a $7 cost

          • @bheart: If you click the different options theres a preview of how much you get refunded. I thought the 'better price elsewhere' was free, but things like 'change of mind' had a $7 fee. Or maybe its a prime benefit? Not sure.

      • If the order is already sent you can send it back for a refund.

You forgot to say abuse gets banned a/c's .
And believe me many are in that position .

  • +2

oh no bought for 67 as well..

Does this have the Swift Start pack ?

    • Doesnt appear to…! Would it be worth $18 anyway?

      • Probably not but it does make me feel better :)

Most likely will be sold out at my local kmart anyway, I'll stick with Amazon.

      • +5

How do you know it doesn't have it?

All copies of Wingspan post-August 2019 come with the swift pack. From Stonemaier's Wingspan page:

"This pack is included in the current version of Wingspan (STM910, see note on the back of the box) but not the original version available from January-August 2019 (STM900)."

      • I'd pay $20 for the swift start pack I reckon.

      • +2

Is this the switft start pack? Looks like $8 and shipping is around $8.

      • +5

I have played wingspan a fair bit during the lockdown. I personally do not rate the swift start pack much at all, it came with my edition of wingspan. I've never used the card that suppose to teach you how to play (i learnt it from watching youtube how to play guide).
Save your money for the Oceania Expansion pack. It introduces a new type of food and has a slightly reworked player board which makes the game better in my opinion. In addition, it has Aussie birds, including the Sydney Bin Chickens (who knew they actually had a real name… Australia Ibis).

        • Nothing exclusively Sydney about the bin chicken…

        • To provide an alternate perspective, I love the swift start pack. I have lots of newbie board gamers, so having the "training wheels" of the swift start pack allows them to set up a mini engine that sets them up for the rest of the game.
I only use it if they've never played it before.

      • I bought it, it does.

    • +5

Just picked it up from Kmart Noarlunga (SA) for $49 and it does include the Swift Start Pack.

  • +3

Wow I can't even get it for this cheap from Stonemaier with my Champion discount - this is an amazing price.

  • Damn! Looks like I will be buying Wingspan after all.

  • +1

I have (im)patiently waited almost a year to buy this on sale. I was so bummed out when I missed the Amazon deal. Great price! 25 Nov 8am - I'll be ready!
    Thanks braussie!

  • +15

Also coming is the revised/second edition of 7 Wonders for $49.

    • nice find a good pick up for $50

    • Would you recommend that or the Duel version? I know the big difference is player count, but I'm wondering if it's hard to get people into this game (meaning the 2p version might get more playtime).

      • +2

you can't really recommend one over the other - Duel can only be played with 2. normal 7 wonders can only be played with 3+
For me personally Duel is slightly more fun, but perhaps because I've played it less often/it's newer to me. I like the pyramid-card mechanic. And in full 7 wonders, while fun, you really still are only interacting with the players either side of you anyway.

        • Ah okay, interesting. Alright I'll just see how I go. I saw Duel for $29 on Amazon, but it was from the UK so need to order something else on top.

          Cheers for the response.

          • +1

@fLaMePrO: Yea the duel is extremely fun but warning if you are playing with your kids - consoling them after beating them in the game can be daunting. I personally enjoy it 😉

            • @smarter_fool: Or girlfriend? hahaha. She hates when we compete against one another, could be dangerous.

      • +2

7 Wonders is really accessible. That saying, I got Duel as my very first game and that started a hobby. While both are card engine-building games with the same brand of artwork, they're two very different games - much beyond just the player count - and I would really recommend both. It also depends on your library already but if has to be one, Duel (especially with the Pantheon expansion) is a brilliant, strategic two-player experience you cannot skip.

        • Okay, that's good to know cheers. Well my collection includes quite a few larger games that are just too hard to introduce to a group. Stuff like Pandemic Legacy, Dead of Winter - they're great but not when we're just trying to jump into something quickly. Not sure if 7 Wonders would have the same problem?

So we end up playing stuff like Quacks of Quedlinburg, Sushi Go. They're fun but on the opposite spectrum, just lacking a bit of depth.

          • +1

@fLaMePrO: Well, 7 Wonders may actually be the stepping stone you miss. Going by BGG, Quacks and Sushi are under 2/5 in difficulty (i.e. "weight"), whereas Pandemic and DoW are roughly 2.8-3/5. 7 Wonders rates at 2.33, which sounds about right because it's easy enough to get into but still has some meat to it.

            • @Jeffie: Yeah righto, thanks! I'll suss it out.

      • +2

Totally different and play very differently.

Regular 7 wonders is a drafting game that can sometimes feel a little luck driven at large player counts. It's not that deep really and can sometimes feel dependant on who you're seated next to. It's also good in that it plays fast at high player counts which is relatively uncommon.

7 wonders duel is a brutal and very tight. Instead of drafting the cards are lined up in a pattern on the table. A lot of it is forcing your opponent to move and reveal and let you take a card that heavily advantages you. Similarly it's about denying cards that suit your opponent's strategy.

        Duel is the better game.

Honestly i think 7 wonders is made obsolete by sushi go party. It has more variety, plays faster, and scratches the same itch.

        • +1

Yeah sounds like I want duel, I'm lacking 2p games so it sounds perfect actually.

          • @fLaMePrO: Yeah, my favourite 2 player game. Can't play it with my wife though, too brutal.

    • Surprisingly (or maybe not) I was still able to pick up 7 Wonders for $49 at our local Kmart in Melbourne — there's at least one more copy at Fountain Gate and Casey, and "Low Stock" in surrounding stores.

    • whats the difference between 1st edition or not thank you

    • +2

Are you assuming or is there something that makes you know its 1st edition

    • I can confirm it is not the first edition - just picked it up today

  • Are these Kmart black friday deals only available online or can you buy instore?

    • +1

This page will help. Specific terms and conditions at the bottom :)
Short answer tho both in store and online.

      • +2

Thanks. I'll have a better look next time.

    • I can confirm, i just bought a copy in a store.
Note they may not be with the other boardgames rather in a special Black Friday section with other specials.

  • -6

$41.42 as cheapest in camel, but yea still good deal if you can't wait.

  • Its a good game. My friend has it so not buying but if they didn't I would be!

      • I'm used to Local Game Store prices lol

  • -8

My bad if this game is on par with Pokemon cards hehe :)

  • +1

I have the digital edition on switch, played the shit out of it.

    • How does it go in local multiplayer? And how many hours have you gotten out of it?

I've been curious and temped by that version and this one

      • +1

Local multiplayer is fine, you will have to pass the controller around when it's the other person's turn (it's not split-screen). But the pros are no need to set up, and you got a big fat screen with wonderful animations and music to play to. I think if I was solely playing locally I would go with the physical board game

Online multiplayer is where the digital version shines IMO, although there are some issues with matchmaking (with people leaving games, etc). I've probably played around 50 hours at this point.

I personally prefer the digital version, there's a narrator that reads bird trivia and bird noise associated with the card you are playing which I find are great additions.

  • -2

I have no idea what this is really, besides some sort of game.

    • +1

Bird watching themed 1-4 player board game in which you play bird cards on different habitats, lay eggs and get resources (food) to play more birds

  • Ty op, cancelled my order with Amazon. You saved me $17

  • I loved the digital version of Wingspan, but my family just wasn't into the physical board game.
    I still highly recommend it….

You can also get expansions to the board game, an obvious choice being the Oceania expansion

  • for 24 hour Kmarts, does this start at midnight?

    • +2

      The T&Cs say 8am

  • +5

You can pick it up in Kmart now if you don't want to wait, at least in W'bool Vic.

    • +2

      $49 still?

      • +2

        Yup!!

    • +1

None at my local store today, hopefully they have stock/click and collect available tomorrow morning though.

  • click find in store below the page, enter your postcode and you can add the boardgame to your cart and checkout. This can be done before 8am

i tried to do click and collect at Lidcombe NSW, its showing stock but unable to process order so ended up just asking for delivery.

    • Thanks, hopefully they fulfil it.

      • yea hopefully, non of the store appears to have stock (even though its showing yes) unless everyone bought the games yesterday physically at kmart like what the person above said

        • +1

My local didn't have it when I checked yesterday, but yeah can't click and collect even from the stores showing stock so fingers crossed delivery works. Could you please update if yours ships?

          • +1

@kicha: Will do not an problem

          • @kicha: I just received an email from kmart that my order has been fulfilled and shipped

            • @smeng: Awesome, thanks for the update - hopefully mine ships out soon too. Enjoy the game!

              • +1

@kicha: i bought wingspan as a Christmas secret Santa gift for a friend, and the 7 wonder for myself, but if 7 wonders is not 2nd edition i will return it

  • How long are deliveries from Kmart taking nowadays? I'm in metro Melbourne.

    • I'm showing 'sold out online' for this item, so it's C&C only.

      • I got one in time! Hopefully it ships soon

  • +1

Bloody hell, there's a queue now to enter Kmart website, 7000+ in front of me.

    • I have 916 people and the queue is paused :(

    • Great, and now the queue is paused.

  • No stock online, that's a shame, I cancelled my Amazon order too :|

  • Well that sucks, none available for click and collect at any of the 4 stores near me and not available for online - it let me get all the way up to payment details before it told me there was none left. What a dodgy rort.

  • +1

Logged in at 5am in WA to find no stock online and all stores…

  • Got one. Thanks Op!

  • Try again. Showed no stock initially but then I refreshed and could order online. Looks like there's more stock still.

  • Got mine. First it said none in stock then I tried again.
Lucky had to pay the $10 postage, too risky to try click and collect.

  • +1

Husband is right there now at Gungahlin Kmart to get a copy for me - said there was about 10 copies left in the women's activewear section…it wasn't where it was supposed to be! Also next to them are the 7 wonders copies too.

  • Instore Carindale Qld there are about 10 or so left.
