Was looking for a docking station and this came up. TBH I don’t understand the difference (this does not come with a charger) but the output is the same (ie: Have all other cords plugged into one, then use 1 cable to plug to the lappy)

The HP site sells it for $100 more so it seems like a bargain.

Please feel free to flame away if not.

  • personally i wouldn't buy this. it's light, feels very cheap, and as you said, you need to use a charger. if you use the standard laptop charger you already have for the laptop, it's unlikely to be enough to drive everything and you'll get warning messages. (from memory i think it runs stuff but doesn't charge the laptop? can't really remember)

after i bought this i then somehow managed to get a new g5 for $109 on ebay and love it.

    • it's unlikely to be enough to drive everything and you'll get warning messages

Unlikely enough power if you use it with some low-power laptop and charger that's 30-40W, yeah.

But likely alright if you're sporting a bigger one.

      • Actually…I think I’m talking shit.

Now I think about it, it was fine with the charger, but it didn’t work with the 65w anker 543 charger on my desk. It wanted 100w. But that’s my own fault obviously.

Notwithstanding that, the stuff about it being as light as a feather and cheap feeling is accurate. The cord that goes to the laptop is also very short so you can’t easily tuck this away on a shelf under the desk.

        • Now I think about it, it was fine with the charger,

What was the wattage of the above charger ? Was it fine just to charge the lappy ??

          Planning on:
          - Charging lappy
          - Run 1 1440p screen
          - Mechanical keyboard
          - Sometimes a FHD 1080p

          • @CY: looks like 90w. PPP012C-S

i also had issues with the monitor being a bit temperamental, but i only tested for 30 mins or so.

personally i'd just buy a used g5 dock off ebay for ~$100.

      • @pizzaguy what about a 65w charger ? I’ve read on another thread that 65w = 45w pass through ?

If that’s enough to slowly charge the laptop that may be enough cause atm I turn the charger (65w) off when battery reaches full and back on (couple of hours) when depleted …. So thinking is 45w pass through I wouldn’t have to turn charger off or less frequently.

        • Really hard to say, it depends how many and what kind of devices you plug in and what you're doing on the computer.

If your laptop battery is flat (needs some watts to charge it) and at the same time you're rendering your videos or playing a more demanding game (needs more wattage to power the CPU and GPU) and you have multiple disks connected to the USBs (a single external SSD takes ~10W, an external HDD would be 3-5W - can't be sure tho), then you may run out of power.

But if you're browsing internets or doing some lightweight work while having some USB devices plugged in, you'll be fine even while charging the battery at the same time.

          • @pizzaguy: I currently run the below from my lappy on a 65w

            • Charging lappy
            • Run 1 1440p screen
            • Mechanical keyboard
            • Sometimes a FHD 1080p

            • Heavy excel use

            • Spotify
            • Its only WFH (have a dedicated comp for gaming)

            The research i've seems conflicting

            Been looking at this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/155113988141?chn=ps&_ul=AU&_trkp…

            • @CY: That doesn't sound too heavy. Should be sweet.

              • @pizzaguy: @pizzaguy Would you entertain that Acer one ?? I can't find many reviews on it. I think the US has a different naming convention / model number for it. The only reason I am thinking is if I ever go up to 4K or 2 x 2K then it has a 135w PSU

                • +1

@CY: Hard for me to tell re the Acer. If it does the job for you, go for it - it's cheap.

                  • @pizzaguy: thanks .. I might give it a shot. $40 down the drain is better than $200 =)

  • Seems 4k only 30Hz if I'm not mistaken

  • +1

Looks the same as this deal I posted earlier if someone wants to look through the comments.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/789445

4K60Hz if single display, 30Hz if dual display.

    • Do you know if this can drive dual 2k@60hz monitors?

  • I wonder if it heats up to very hot like the cheap, $10-20 versions of it. No matter if anything's plugged in, the cheaper ones are universally hot to touch, which means it draws power for nothing.

  • That cable looks thin and flimsy.

    • It’s not it’s quite rigid. The whole thing is quite nice for a piece of plastic.

  • Why do so many of these hubs have 1xhdmi and 1xdisplay port? I'm looking for one with 2x HDMI which seems much more logical if you have matching monitors.
