Own these, originally had picked them up for about $148 each. Really good quality image and I am very happy with them. I haven't dialed in the sensitivity of object detection yet but honestly for the price they are the best and beat their competitors.

    • What’s the night vision like?

The colour night vision looks interesting but I gather it’s a very slow frame rate so anything moving is blurred???

      • +2

The night vision is pretty rubbish to be honest with all these budget security cameras, doesn't come anywhere near the much more expensive night vision ones.

If you keep it on the infrared mode it's not too blurred but not really clear enough to make out distinctive features on a face or anything like that. If you switch to coloured mode, then fast moving things are blurred, yes

        • What would you recommend for higher end ones that do a better job?

          • +1

@GetFitWithCameron: Sorry mate, I wouldn't have a clue haha. I went with these Reolink ones because they are really good quality daytime recording for the price. I also have a number of friends who have Reolink systems in general and they are all happy with it. Having the complete security camera system and the PoE camera doorbell as well in the one system is exactly what I need for my use case

To be honest nighttime footage is not of much interest to me because I have motion outdoor lights around the house and these cameras do a good enough job recording in colour at night when those turn on, and even with those turned off these units will continue recording black & white with infrared. Ultimately for me it's all about making my house more of a deterrent to break into than going with commercial grade security cameras for a higher price

  • Any clever people know if these record direct to NFS shares from their FW like the Hikvision/Annke models?

    • +1

Not that I've come across - you can do it over FTP though.

I haven't done it personally, but If you're looking to centralise the management of data, you can run your own NVR service using something like
      blueiris.

      • Yep running blueiris at the moment actually, as well as playing with ispy on Truenas…..But I got a couple of Annke's recently that record straight to my NFS shares and man, just a tad easier and less overhead you know.

  • Anyone know how PoE works (Power over Ethernet)? Does the camera get power by simply connecting to an internet router via Ethernet cable?

    • It gets power via the ethernet cable but you need the cable to be connected to a PoE switch, or use an online PoE injector

    • Can just plug the camera directly into your nvr

    • This specific camera comes with 3 cables coming out of it at the back of the mount.

      1) data + PoE - this allows for a single PoE ethernet cable to power the unit on as well as do the data
      2) power only cable - this can be used with a non-PoE powered ethernet cable to power the unit on - but means you need to figure out a way to get the DC power to this cable if you wanted to go the non-PoE route
      3) manual reset switch - there's a push button at end of the cable to manually reset the camera (touch wood never need to bother using this), this is some sort of manual reset button at the camera itself, bit of a pain to get to if needed for maintenance, but it's there

You can either power + data using just a PoE ethernet cable to #1, OR go with a standard non-PoE powered ethernet cable to #1 and alternative DC power to #2

To add to what others have mentioned, a high quality ethernet cable is probably best for the PoE option, you will want the cable to have single core copper instead of stranded in the twisted pairs, and you want one that has a thick outer rubber (the jacket) so it reduces chance of it getting damaged while being cable pulled or by pests. These cameras run on 48v PoE which the Reolink PoE NVR units can power. This camera isn't for standalone use really tbh

For anyone reading, if you are trying to run this without the Reolink PoE NVR unit, then you probably need to have a look here and go from there first, maybe people on Reddit have instructions on what's possible without the NVR. https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/900000592726-W…

    HomeKit version?

    • +1

No, there is no Homekit integration on any Reolink cameras, though there are ways to do it for the more adventurous.

      • Thanks. I’m too old to worry about piecing these together. Thanks anyway.

  • Umart has these for a similar price. They also sell a TPLink 5 port switch with built in PoE for <$60 which solved my PoE requirement.

Very happy so far with this solution.
