Why would they announce a potentially cheaper, slimmer and more power efficient model when they are trying to clear excess stock?

Eh, there was about 15 PS5 exclusives, including small ones by that point. It's not really that many games.
The PS5 runs PS4 games significantly smoother and has faster loading, so you'd be benefitting regardless of which games you play
Legit the opportunity cost was worth it. I managed to secure mine at RRP but in hindsight I would've happily paid $1500 for one to get through Covid.

I love how with the eBay deals we can see how many have been sold, no one is really buying them at this price yet we see PC builds fly out of stock on here. I think Sony shot themselves in the foot by dropping the PS5 with low supply. I would have bought one at the time if it was available and I know many others would have to but I'm sticking to PC now.
I agree with this. I definitely was looking at buying one when they came out. I think the lack of AAA titles / exclusives was also a big issue.
Now PC technology has caught up and it really doesn't make as much sense to spend money on a PS5 and I'd rather get a better gaming laptop that I can plug into the TV.
I'll likely wait for used prices to come down to about 300 then upgrade from PS4.
