Price beat plus 15% gift card opportunity? (No idea if you can use gift cards for price beat but I assume so)

    • Good idea, perks is a discount code so they would probably price match the $549 listed price instead though

Great battery, MicroSD card slot, and surprisingly good camera (including low light!) for its tier.

If the offered a vanilla experience, I'd have been all over this. It was on the short list for me for sure.

    • Yeah this was on my shortlist too.

But then I remembered all of the Samsung phones I've bought over the years, (3 of them - S3, S7, S8), have all suffered an early demise from some kind of fault.
      - S3 just refused to connect to SIM card one day - like the modem or antenna crapped out.
      - S7 the screen goes black unless you put it in the freezer for a few hours - then you get maybe 30mins of use before black screen.
      - S8 just suddenly totally dead.

I like to keep my phones for about 3 years. And it seems Samsungs are only designed for a little over 1 year of my usage for some reason.

I ended up with the cheaper Moto G82.

I was a little worried with a (technically) china phone, but I'm a bit of an Android nerd, and a good look around with ADB didn't show anythting malicious; plsu my firewall isn't reporting any unexpected connections.

I'll be sticking with Moto for a while I think.

        • Yes I got moto's for the kids they seem to be good phones. In the G82 deal I wish I'd got a couple more lol.

But for me the lack of both microSD and waterproof on a phone means no moto for me.

I got the Xperia 10 V. Its the only circa $500 phone that met all my must haves. But even then I'd have preferred a more popular model but must haves are must haves.

            @stumo: Lack of?
G82 has microsd (have a 512gb in it right now), and a 3.5mm headphone jack (have an IR blaster in mine), plus its moisture sealed.

No official rating other than splashproof; but its proven fine in the shower. (Tested dozens upon dozens of times by now, haha).
I dont take my phone swimming, if im at the beach or something im happy to disconnect for a while.

Its good for $350, even if you missed that 'crazy' 2xx deal a while back.

@MasterScythe: Yeah just the other day I accidentally jumped into the pool with my phone still in my pocket, so "moisture sealed" isn't going to cut it for me.

I've been spoiled by LG waterproof phones with all the features for so long now, it just happens. I wish LG were still making phones.

              • @stumo: RIP my edge 30 Fusion which went the same way after only 3 months :(
Next phone is IP67 minimum but prefer IP68 again…

Still have my A52 and love it for work and personal, $2K phones waste of money.

    • A52 and A52S was peak A series. The new ones like A54 they have massively increased the size of the bezels and changed aspect ratio so they are much harder to hold/use single handed.

    • Surprised my A7 (2017) is still going strong, even on Android v8 which can be a bit limiting. Whats the secret to longevity?

If only it had 8GB of ram

    • +1

RAM is really only useful on phones if you app switch a LOT.
This thing happily runs 2 apps in splitscreen without lagging. I can have my webpage open, and my notepad/Excel open copying things down without issue.

  • The A34 5G performs better with its Mediatek SoC. Higlights how crap Samsungs Exynos SoCs still are.

  • This or a Pixel 7 for my mum? Pixel 7 is obviously more and she mainly just does calls / photos which is why the Pixel 7 is maybe a better choice.

She also tends to water damage phones from sweat too.. So more water resistance is better.
