  • Thank you, as always, for these. Trying to get to Vietnam around 9th of January next year - flights are more expensive than I expected/am used to for Vietnam. Tried getting tickets during $0 Vietjet fares, but that amounted to nothing…

    Any ideas?

Quite a tough time of year as people still on their NY break. From the 20th tho, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/799707 might help! One way starts at $159 from Perth (sorry not sure what city you're in but they also fly from SYD and MEL)

  • Good price!
They now complain about over tourism tho 🤦

    • +5

Only in the main tourist cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. There's so much more of Japan that people never see sadly.

      • Like what/where?

        • +1

          Kanazawa

          • @Murpha: Got a trip planned for Feb and Kanazawa is on top of the list for something different.

          • @Murpha: Woohoo! Been there several times as i always avoiding bullet train between Tokyo-Osaka. Surprisingly, the train duration for Tokyo-Kanazawa and/or Kanazawa-Osaka is pretty much the same so its always in my itinerary.
Plus trip to Shirakawago via Kanazawa is faster (if calculating the start from Tokyo, for example) than via Toyama/Takayama however the later cities are also excellent! Cant miss both

        • +1

Seems I was beaten to Kanazawa. That whole area of Japan along the top of the coastline is very untouched. Otherwise a few other places I like are Matsuyama which is on a big island south of Hiroshima and Kitakyushu in the Kyushu region that people often travel though to reach Kagoshima.

          • +1

@Clear: "A big island" lol, the fourth-largest in Japan, Shikoku?

Apart from passing through Kagoshima en route to the islands (which still isn't very popular with tourists), people tend to ignore the remainder of southern Kyushu - Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures. Worth avoiding if you dislike beautiful surf beaches with unique rock formations, amazing hot springs of every kind, culinary delicacies like black pork and sweet potato shochu, natural and mythological places of beauty and history, incredible castles, samurai towns, some of the world's most active volcanoes and hot sand baths.

            • +1

@Meconium: Kyushu is definitely very neglected and the best place for hot springs. I feel no one ever goes anywhere else besides Beppu and Kagoshima.

              • @Clear: I suppose the earthquake damaging Kumamoto Castle significantly reduced tourism to that amazing city. Plenty of hidden gems down Minami-Kyushu way - once I mention Sakura Sakura Onsen in the Kirishima Mountains, I know I've revealed too much!

FYI Most of these are not direct flights. At least for the Melbourne flights I saw, mostly over 20hrs one way.

  • Thanks

  • +4

All of of these I've looked at have a 30 hour flight on the return leg.

  • +1

Almost nothing direct, from or to Brisbane.

25-30 hours is just too much compared to 8 hours.

  • +2

hoping to see those ~$900 jal prices return for the may '24 period, very upset i hesitated

  • Hey mate, looking to do a trip to Japan in either February or March. Are there any sales for those, or have they already gone?

  • +12

claiming it's JAL but it's actually QF+JAL with 16h layover at SIN, makes a 25h+32h return trip, is not a deal!

    • +2

Yeah even if you put your time at award rates that's an easy $400-800 in time sitting in an airport breathing farts.

  • +2

OP I think the Brisbane deal is a bit disingenuous since they are overnight flights to Sydney or long stops in SIN. Neither are worth the savings, especially syd since you'll need accommodation.

    • Second what you said. For those who live here and don't think Brisbane is only a big country town, look at how the international airlines treat us, it IS a big country town.

      • The worlds best airline flies three times a day to BNE?

That's pretty good. That's more than they fly to Frankfurt (2x daily).

        • But the 3rd and 5th don't

  • ANA business class ex Sydney direct in cherry blossom season is up from several months ago and I expect further increases in the coming months. Hotels are tracking similarly and double approximately to non cherry blossom period.

  • I haven’t checked these layovers but I’m going to start my Cebu flight back to Melbourne from Narita via manila.

This layover is perfect for me; arrive manila 5.10pm today, flight leaves 12.30pm next day.

Easy Grab to a red planet hotel.

And before the Cebu hate starts all the return legs are daytime so I don’t need to sleep, the meals are great, I booked an exit row cheap, and I like that the seats don’t recline so no F wit reclining on me (although I did book exit row).

So, long layovers can be okay depends when they are.

  • What are the best places in Japan to go end of October? Does the weather get too cold.. Prefer some scenic locations for pictures..

    Thanks in advance

    • Hiroshima was mentioned to me as a great place in autumn (October) for the colours of the leaves etc. It's not too far north, and the average high in Oct is 23.

      • Thanks.. Now thinking to stay till first week of November… Any place near Tokyo area or would it be too cold?
