Im hoping it was a new unused keyboard, because those fabric keyboards get manky and just everyone ive ever seen for sale second hand in an ad is coated in wrist and palm grime and made me want to throw up in my mouth a lil bit :)

Please tell me it was a new unused one, so i can sleep tonight….

Almost "as new", only some wear in the corners

    • +1

fabric is bad material for keyboard.

some of those stains maybe from their body fluids

I feel this is fair to post, and based on experience, you may disagree however

In more on topic news, please also realise these have the same near zero user repairable parts and disassembly requires heating and other possibly device killing manoeuvres to get apart, and thankfully Microsoft has been backed into a corner to change this for future products….personally as an IT person of over 30 years, i steer clear of these Surface products and advise others to generally do the same. They were hideously expensive new, unrepairable, and still attracted premiums on the second hand market, until they get to the point where theyre sold when the battery life is usually terrible. If anyone i know is set on buying one, i advise them to ask for a battery report (a good habit when buying any laptop second hand - most places will give an average if selling in bulk - and some will even accept returns if you find yours is below the average by a margin), if the seller wont give you one, then probably best to assume thats for a reason and to avoid.

    • I got a surface 3 second hand 5 years ago and it still works fine. Picked up a Surface 6 earlier this year for $300 from a deal on OzBargain and it was impossible to distinguish from a new one. Even the keyboard looks brand new.
Can you suggest better value than that?

for every good one you find, theres 10 really poor ones, again, this is from experience, in volume settings in large corporates etc - ive usually worked in anywhere up to 4,500 seat support roles - not a hobbyist :)

still nothing beats the return rate of Acers crap, so theres that. ask me about the time UTS Sydney got offered a killer deal by Acer to be lured away from HP gear, and i personally helped switch over 10 computer labs worth of computers, every, and i mean every single desktop PC on 12 pallets had the same fault, now it takes some special QC to arrange that….or that time i watched one of their monitors spontaneously combust in a government office when they had a run of those. I saw the magical blue smoke appear and warned the lady to move and pull the plug, but she told me i was crazy. Then her colleague toldf her i was right, but by then it was time for the fire extinguishers to make an appearance

so acer is worst brand laptop to get?

          what is recommended brands then?

        • for every good one you find, theres 10 really poor ones, again

Well I've had 2 good ones.

If you get a bad one, just return it.

    • Are battery reports reliable? I just got a thinkpaf laptop with 1 cycle count, 99% original capacity (not sure why 99, not 100).
Reviews of the model all say 10+ hours. However, I could only get around 3hrs average use from that. It's a 2018 model.

    • thanks for the info.

yeah people don't always think of reparability and upgradeability with laptops.
not sure if most average joes upgrade their laptop at all.
only techie people may want to do this.

for most people if it is faulty they send it back to the seller to get it repaired…

  • This or Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 Grade A condition for $335?

    • They have a funny definition of A Grade.

““Item has been cleaned and refurbished and comes with 3 months warranty. All components have been tested and are in good working order. Item has been installed with a clean copy of Windows 11 Pro with all drivers. "There may be some cosmetic scratches, marks, dents, dint, blemishes, scuffing on external surface and stains on Keyboard."

On eBay, look for "Certified - Refurbished" with 1-year warranty.

        stains on keyboard…

Just to be clear im not saying there cant be good ones, and im not particularly hauling Microsoft over the coals, for anything other than the really poor repairability here, which they deserve and are to change.

You may see me post on any deals with 8th Gen Core i5 laptops - about how they are less than ideal for performance tasks and thermally throttle (and some suggestions to curb), thats because i own one, not even my personal choice of laptop (Asus Zenbook) is perfect…but im aware of its foibles…not to mention mine still has a good 6 hours of battery life, which is about the best ive ever seen out of second hander

Im just mentioning potential issues for these things others may not be aware of…if you buy one and get a good one, im all for you, but i also have experience with them when they dont go well or people want them fixed

I mean i have a friend who has a still working Toshiba Qosmio (one of the first attempts at gaming and media laptops, with tv tuner and really poor cooling) from the dark ages, every other one i ever saw in person died within a year of purchase….his still works to this day, every time he travels to where he keeps it, he sends a pic of it working, as if its mocking me ;) . You'll always find outliers…

fwiw, this is the command to generate and put a battery report right on the desktop (not hidden in the system folder as it is by default)

    powercfg /batteryreport /output "%userprofile%\Desktop\batteryreport.html"

you can email that or message that to someone and have them paste into windows search box (as one line) and screencap the resulting html file…my result ratio on getting people to do this is about 85%, most people are honest and willing to do it

    • Thanks for sharing. May i know what value is considered ok?

      • +1

        Values?

Its basically a comparison of the design capacity (the capacity it was designed and left the factory with) and the full charge capacity (its current capacity at full charge), both values are shown in the summary for each Install Battery in the report

The closer the full charge capacity is to the design capacity, the better

You can express this as a % remaining capacity by putting the full charge capacity into the first field in the second section of the percentage calculator linked below, and the design capacity in the second field…it will then spit out a percentage…obviously, like the raw numbers, the higher the percentage the better

        OR, alternately

You can express it as a % capacity decrease by putting the design capacity into the first field in the third section of the percentage calculator linked below, and the full charge capacity in the second field…it will then spit out a percentage…in this case, the lower the percentage the better

        https://percentagecalculator.net/

p.s. Also be aware that Microsoft Surface Books have 2 batteries (as do some rare other brand laptops), so you can check both - they have different capacities as the tablet section obviously has a smaller battery. Again, on personal experience, Surface Book detachable tablet section batteries tend to tank after a year and a half (ive seen a few with usable batteries after that period) turning them back into conventional laptop (not a deal breaker), while the base batteries can fare better. Its also common for the batteries for each section of a Surface Book to be made by different manufacturers, so can be a mixed bag based solely on that. Ive had mixed success getting battery reports out of Surface Book sellers…

I got a used surface pro at my work. Battery lasts a whole 20 mins. I put it back in the cupboard and said no thx

    • Next time, charge it first.

Bought a used surface 6 some time back. Best value I ever got. It does show signs of use but it works a charm. It can be hit and miss though

  • +2

My surface pro 7 is slow as a wet dog. It's an i7 but I'm guessing it's constantly thermally throttled cause any CPU intensive tasks take longer than much lesser desktops.

If I could replace the SSD I would be much happier - the model up can do that but mine is stuck behind Microsoft glue. It gives me around ~100MBps and just runs like a wet dog. New SSD would probably fix that but I'm not going to get the heating pad out unless I really have to. Cause it probably won't survive the surgery.

Dirty on Microsoft for being more Apple than Apple when they decided to make hardware.
