Ignoring price, which of the Firecuda 520, Q4 Rocket and A2000 is the best performer? Or are they all broadly within margin of error?

    • +3

Firecuda 520, PCIe gen 4 x4, Phison E16 chipset based (so older gen PCIe gen 4 x4) is the fastest out of the 3 you mentioned.
Q4 Rocket, QLC so… best to avoid because the price difference is so little.

Kingston A2000 1TB, PCIe gen 3 x4. It's hard for me to recommend because my most recent SSD which went #@$@#$ happened to be an A2000 1TB. I received full refund from the retailer though.

See the table in my next comment further down for a comparison. Also, check prices on other discounted SSDs.

    • Have a look at NewMaxx's SSD flowchart. I'm pretty sure the FC520 is the best out of those. If I were choosing I'd go for the 2TB P41 Platinum for $178. What're you planning on using them for?

    • My understanding is the sabrent rockets are the faster of the options while the firecuda has an exceptional tbw. This means you can write and rewrite alot more data to the firecuda before you exceed its design life. However most ssds now have tbws well beyond the average user so unless you write TBs of data daily, I suspect the rocket will suit better and is cheaper.

I think the A2000 is a lower quality drive so spend the extra $10-$20 on one of the other 2 based on your use case.

Sigh… best to google and check first (because these SSD models are poorly named):

Rocket Q4 is QLC. To me, it is the worst one of the lot. Bear in mind, all Phison E16 "TLC" based SSDs have higher than usual quoted TBW. It's more marketing to be honest.

        Rocket Q4 1TB Seagate 520 1TB Seagate A2000 1TB
        Interface PCIe 4.0 x4 PCIe 4.0 x4 PCIe 3.0 x4
        Controller Phison E16 Phison E16 SMI SM2263EN
        DRAM DDR4 DDR4 DDR4
NAND Micron 96L QLC Toshiba 96L TLC Micron 96L TLC
Max Seq Read 4,700 MBps 5,000 MBps 2,200 MBps
Max Seq Write 1,850 MBps 4,400 MBps 2,000 MBps
        TBW 200 TB 1,800 TB 600 TB
        Sustained Write* 100MB/s ?? 600 MBps 490 MBps

        * Sustained write in the table above discards SLC cache write speed (so basically the TLC or QLC NAND write speed).

Seagate 520 1TB is the best one out of the three, but in today's standard, it isn't that great unless you really cannot resist the high TBW. I wouldn't consider 600 MBps sustained write good for a PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD,

At 4tb, why bother with the gen3 rocket when the gen4 q4 rocket is a mere $25 more?

    • +1

The 4TB Gen 3 Rocket was $260 during Prime Day, so this isn't a good price for that particular drive: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/786835

    • +2

Because if that one is still TLC, then it doesn't tank like QLC in sustained write. Q4 4TB (Q = QLC) sustained write goes down to 200MB/s.

  • Ugh just bought Firecuda for $103 via Amazon 🤦

    • Firecuda 520 or Firecuda 530?

      • Ohhhh yeah, 530

    SN750 2TB @ $200 is ridiculously expensive let alone called a DEAL.

    Sabrent Rocket Q4 (‎SB-RKTQ4-4TB) - DRAM/Phison E16/QLC
Best of the introductory PCIE 4.0 SSDs with Dram at 4TB which is quite rare.
Great value SSD that can also function well as the main storage drive. It’s not included in this deal but another Ozb mentioned it above

    Sabrent Rocket - 3.0 Phison E12S/DRAM/TLC
    High end PCIE 3.0 SSD
The 4TB model is okayish if looking to increase storage on your computer, though the Lexar NM790 and PNY CS2241 has been Ozb secondary storage of choice lately.

    Firecuda 520 - 4.0 Phison E16/DRAM/TLC
About the same as Q4 except limited to 2TB

WD SN750 - 3.0 WD Proprietary comparable to E12/DRAM/ TLC

    Kingston A2000- 3.0 SM2263EN/DRAM/QLC
Pretty much the worst offering out of them all

I would also consider the following 2 deals if you’re in the market for SSDs
    Samsung 970 EVO 2TB - 3.0 High End SSD
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/796563

SK Hynix Platinum P41 4.0 - SK Hynix Proprietary (Aries) Comparable to E18/Dram/TLC
It's better than the Sabrent offerings tbh but it's reflected in the price
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/795015 - 1TB
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/795581 - 2TB

    • They're great suggestions, thanks Yve. Have you seen any deals for 4TB SSDs?

      • +1

The Lexar deal is still up
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/792769
I'm still holding for when Mid-High end 4.0 4TB SSDs hit $350 (What most E18/InnoGrit IG5236 comparable ssds are currently priced at)

  • no deals to be seen here. move right along folks

    • +1

Agree got the Rocket 4tb for $260 on the last deal can't be paying this.

  • Any M.2 2230 deals floating around? (For steam deck)
