A good, affordable grinder please. Powered and non-powered.

  • Vaguely remember I paid about 110 ish for this coffee machine way back in 2018. Guess this is a deal if factoring in inflation?

    • The cheapest recorded price on Ozbargain was
      $145.87

You would have bought the EC685. The newer EC885 comes with a proper steam wand and a tamper in the box.

I have mine from 2018 too, I'd pay the extra $50 just for the steam wand, old one is so very bad.

  • Surprisingly good machine.
My cousin has a Breville Barista and I can’t understand why anyone would spend more than this on a coffee machine.

    • -1

you don't understand because you yet haven't experienced the performance of a high tier coffee machine

      • Well, I have and it tasted no better than my Dedica.

        • To be fair, the Dedica and Bambino are both very good bang for buck machines, but to say that the coffee out of those and a decent machine a few steps up taste the same is just not true. The Dedica doesn't reach a high enough temp, even using the steam setting hack, to get a proper extraction. If you're using dark roast, you can probably get a decent extraction, but not great. Also you won't be able to use any medium/light roasts for sure.

Someone explain to me how a sub-$200 coffee machine can be anything but junk, not worth wasting your money one, when other coffee machines costing close to $10K are posted as bargains here on OzBargain. I ask this as someone who likes coffee, but can't understand what I would need to spend to get a good cup of it.

    • +2

you can produce a plenty good cup with this machine. but the difference between high costing machine like the micra vs this is the experience and functionality.

this machine to steam, takes a while to heat up and even then doesn't produce a powerful steam compared to other more expensive machines with dedicated boiler or heat exchangers.

the coffee in itself will be fine, other than the flavor different from 51mm vs 58mm portafilter and being "15 bars of pressure" you might expect some bitterness but nothing dealbreaking.

if Anything grinder is more generally important than the coffee machine itself unless you want to do funny things like pressure profiling.

tldr: this machine is capable of producing a yummy cup of coffee but isn't as pleasant to use compared to other high end machines. To get a good cup requires more focus on the grinder rather than the machine itself. Spending more money on a 10k machine is more focused on consistency of pulling multiple shots in a row or functionality. which for a home user is dimnishing return.

      • nicely explained. thanks

The dedica can make a decent coffee.

Looks like they’ve upgraded the steam wand, the previous version was extremely challenging to make steamed milk that wasn’t complete froth. It will take near 2 minutes to steam a jug of milk.

That said, it’s not a consistent machine you should expect to make quality shots back to back. That is when you start to pay more. If you’re making more than one coffee, say you have friends, you will observe inconsistency between shots. Steaming milk will take much longer than something with a dedicated steam boiler.

Swap out the basket (non pressurized) and group handle and with a decent grinder and you will be able to pull a single decent cup of coffee.

Great starting machine, I’ve run mine for many years with a few modifications.

Eventually you may go down the rabbit hole and want to play with different settings with different beans. Once it becomes a hobby, this is when you’ll start to spend more as well.

I bought the previous model from Aldi about 18 months ago for around $180. I did a steam wand mod (Rancilio steam wand) which took about half hour, and bought a bottomless portafilter and other paraphernalia (tamper, dosing funnel, basket, WDT) and I'm pulling shots that I think are better than my local cafes. Probably put $300 into it (including the machine).

I also have the matching grinder, out of the box it doesn't grind fine enough to pull decent pressure but again there's a mod that's literally just dropping a washer in to get the burrs a little closer together and gets proper espresso grind.

I was very pleasantly surprised with the machine once I'd made these mods - I definitely wasn't expecting the results I am getting.

On the topic of coffee machines, can anyone recommend a good automatic coffee machine (non pod version - preferably one with a built in grinder for coffee beans). Budget is up to $1-1.5 k. Was eying out the DeLonghi Magnifica Evo S but seeing somewhat mixed reviews.

    • +2

I think Jura tends to be Ozbargain favorite but the smeg automatic coffee machine that was uploaded recently is also plenty good for its value.

whats more important is actually cleaning the machine as it will impact the taste significantly

Im in the same budget range and been looking at the Breville dual boiler / smart grinder combo. Currently $1444 but far from the pre covid lows. If anyone has any other recommendations im all ears :) .

Jura. You can also often get them cheap on Gumtree if you want to save some cash. DeLonghi would be my second pick.

  • And bigly

  • LG C3 65" TV for $3055 is tempting. Also $200 'store cash' if paying with Latitude, but not sure if that's a good idea.

  • Ok that's not fair, just bought a Westinghouse fridge on Friday (delivered today) - already a good price - and now this pops up which would have made it an incredible bargain!

    • This is just a freezer though. I’m looking for a refrigerator myself. Is the Westinghouse deal still available?

  • Looking at the TVs - any good value in the Samsung 50" CU8000 or LG 43" UR8050?

Both come down to $760.75 after the 15%

  • How does Dedica compare to Bambino Plus?

    • +1

The bambino plus has the 3 way valve, which essentially means, when the extraction is stopped, the remaining water is pushed out so your not getting any tailing liquids. While the Dedica does not.

Bambino plus also has a stronger steaming power + the automatic steam function from what i know.

At that price tag I honestly don't see a reason why to buy the bambino vs the express other than the size footprint.

If you can buy a bambino plus used for a good price its not bad but not worth the hefty price tag over the dedica.

tldr just get breville express if ur considering bambino plus

      • Thanks for the detailed answer, man. Really appreciate it.

  • Anyone used that Hisense chest freezer? Is that good? TA

    • +1

      I have the 200L.
Its quiet, seems to be frost free so far and very economical (havent noticed a significant increase in electricity usage so far after over 2 months).
Also have it set a 4 (highest is 7) and freezes nicely.

  • Any other coffee machines that I should be cross shopping?

    My budget is $200-$400.

Is there an automatic machine in this price range also worth considering?
(Edit: had a quick look at the other machines on sale. Looks like I might be out of my mind expecting anything automatic in this price range).

Speculated to be the same coffee machine as this unbranded Kmart one:
