Woolworths supermarket is holding a flash sale on its popular hot roast chickens in all stores.
The retail giant has confirmed that it has slashed the price on its BBQ chooks from $12 to $10.90.

They can afford the price drop, after 1.62b profit.

We need a new player in the game to shake things.

        • +6

          Something catchy.. like jv-mart

        • Has Aldi not manage to erode the duopoly?

          • +1

@Craze: If Woolworths and Coles disappeared tomorrow and people had to buy everything from Aldi there would be heaps of stuff they could no longer get. Aldi isn’t a serious competitor, they are a minor inconvenience to the major chains.

Also, they don’t have BBQ chickens.

And they’re only now managing to have self serve.

We need a third player who is actually competent enough to take on Coles and Woolworths. Amazon own Whole Foods in the US, hopefully one day they bring that here.

It will actually boost their profits as a "loss leader". Walk in for a chook, walk out with 5 half-ripped new paper bags full of other groceries.

      • Not if you are a frugal Ozbargainer like me. I go in, I know what I want and need. Very rarely impulsive buys. Times are hard.

    • +2

I could only get through half of that before my body's defence mechanism kicked in, warning of imminent damage to my IQ.

  • +21

"slashed the price" after jacking it up from $11 to $12 a few weeks ago.

    • +5

You could always go to you local bbq chicken shop and pay $20

      • My local charcoal is $13

      • +1

At least it doesn't taste like &#i[

  • +7

Sale but it's the pre-inflation price…. Do yourself a favour and go to Costco (to save yourself money) , your local charcoal chicken place or El Jannah pretty much anywhere but the major supermarkets right now. They need the money/support more than Woolies right now.

    • +7

El jannah at around $19 for a chook is getting abit steep

      • +2

And the El Jan chickens are tiny…. But delicious

  • +5

$6.99 at Costco and they are really good and big compared to woollies

    • +2

      and they are really good

      they taste awful…

      • +1

        and under cooked.

        • You don’t like chicken blood?

          • @jv: Yeah somethings definitely wrong with whatever costco you go to, Mine is nothing like what's been described in these few comments.

        • Medium rare to keep it juicy

    • +3

Only 15 Costco stores in Australia, in outer suburbs. Vs 1,111 Woolworths Supermarkets!

Expense of getting to a store + membership negates any savings for most.

Costco is over 50k return for me from near CBD - chicken would be cold!
Requires added expense of a car + $18 petrol.
Or pay for 4hr return on bus & train + 1hr walk.
Or… take the FREE 10min bus ride from end of street to Woolies 2k away.
      An easy decision - Woolies!

Touché. Love travelling for pleasure & adventure. Something to look forward to. To experience interesting places, people, taste other foods…🌴🍜 To have a memorable experience!

Costco doesn't do any of that for me😞

Traveling unnecessarily, way out of my way, to do mundane grocery shopping I could do easier just down the street - is not my idea of fun! More like torture.
Don't think that is what anyone wants.

Paying a membership fee on top of that inconvenience is rubbing (discounted) salt into the wound😜

          • @INFIDEL:

            To have a memorable experience!

NGL, but the trip to costco you described is quite the memorable experience

    • +2

I found the chicken to be bland and tasteless from Costco but agree they are huge and cheap.

  • Can't stand the woolworths/coles chickens. So bland. Red rooster or nothing.

    • So bland

They seem to vary store by store.

  • Aldi had whole chooks for $3.50 /kg. Stuff under the skin with tablespoon.of Pataks curry paste and lemon rind. Salt / pepper the top and air fry.
    Cheaper / better.

  • -2

$1.62b is actually very low….. imo

    • +1

It's not just that they are making more money than before, it's that they are increasing "operating margins". From 5.3% to 6% just in the last year. Highest margin they have ever charged on their grocery division, and double what supermarkets in other, higher competition markets charge.

    • +2

Pretty sure I got that shaking around in my ashtray.

      • +1

Rummaged the back of my couch cushions. 2 Billion easy.

  • +3

The accompanying bag of salad has probably gone up $1.10.

  • Would love to see them at $8 each but that will never happen.

        • +1

But am paying with so many thousands of Rewards points from previous bonus offers. Received 25,000 bonus pts in one recent offer to change electricity retailer. So tend not to use those gift cards!

    The bachelors purse.

  • Was actually thinking about this the other day. Does anyone do anything with the chicken after buying it from woolies to enhance the flavour? Like adding a bit spices to it or putting in the airfryer for a few more mins to make the skin more crispier?

  • -1

Last time I got one of these (this week) from Coles I wondered… was it a cage chicken I was eating? What conditions did the $13 chickens (if available) have versus the $12?

    • -1

      Why?

      • Because I might be supporting cruel farming practices without realising it?

    • +1

No cages for meat chickens, would add costs. They are very cosy with all their buddies tho.

  • Also not sure if this will make Coles be more generous with their policy…

  • Wow almost 10% off

  • Note this is also available at this price on MILKRUN, which also has free delivery for first 3 orders over $20.

    • +1

      CHICKEN RUN

  • -3

Costco price $6.99. Not a bargain.

    • +1

Petrol to drive to my nearest Costco and back would be more than $4

    • Only 15 Costco stores in Australia, in outer suburbs. Vs 1,111 Woolworths Supermarkets!

Not exactly 'cheaper elsewhere' for a large portion of the population.
