Focal Utopia 2022 Open Back Headphones $3999 Delivered @ Addicted To Audio

860

Think a2a is clearing stock of focal headphones. This price is pretty much insanity compared to other countries selling usually at around $4000 USD mark.

Update: $3999 now but still good price.

Thanks OP, purchased 4 for my podcast.

    • +38

No worries. they can be hard to resist with such a cheap price

    • +8

You can use 1 as a mic and 1 as a chair for your podcast

  • This orArya Organic?

  • Is this waterproof?

    • +1

      And platinum plated?

  • +58

Should I sell my 2007 corolla for these? BTW I don't mind the bus

    • +41

No, open back won't work well on a bus.

  • +18

Oh my. Makes my $200 headphones seem so very cheap…. I would probably never know the difference personally.

    • +16

My $12 Rejectshop ones look so miserable but I still can have good meals LOL

    • +12

Audio is almost the king of diminishing returns. $200-$400 would probably be in the sweet spot for a great set of cans. These would sound better, but not 10x better.

      • +3

In fact probably less than 2x better. For $700 you can achieve 95%+ of the best available in terms of pure accurate sound reproduction. I have good analytical ears and struggle to find value at least in SQ above this level.

I know - for some - exclusivity and superb build quality is important, but I’ve been on that journey only to return unfulfilled.

  • +6

You’d be crazy not to spent 3.5 k on headphones you can’t even wear around other people.

    • +100

Mate, if I had these I wouldn't need other people

    • +4

You can disconnect the cable from the headphones and pretend they're bluetooth.

  • +1

    Wow, so many Focal deals.

Though they were one of the brands I avoided because of the deluge of CS and replacement cost complaints- the US$200 replacement pads have stuck in my mind.

    • +1

Flavour of the month, just like when we had em tesla deals lol

  • +19

Can these match the quality of the Airpods Max? My library is mostly 128kbs mp3s but I have some real good quality 256kb ones too.

    • +14

These are arguably one of the best headphones in the world, the airpods max are garbage compared to these, although it will always depend on the source and quality of the music. You do not want to play compressed music through these $3500 headphones.

      • +7

Not only compressed, but also badly mastered music too.

Lots of people that drop big money on these headphone setups, only to listen to loudass music with woeful dynamic range (sub DR-6 etc).

        • +9

Wow. An ozbargainer that cares about dynamic range. Never thought i’d see that! I get teary eyes when I see a mainstream album with 13 plus

        • +6

I'm assuming everyone in here is joking.

    • +2

You need to upgrade your ears to hear the difference.

  • No doubt high-end at that price. Focal Utopia is a strange name though

  • +3

am I going to get eat orgasms with this

    • +13

No, you'd need something like a Villeroy & Boch cutlery set for that.

  • +3

Perfect for listening to my 128kbps mp3's on my Zune!

    • +2

      Would have thought WMAs.

    • Stem is where it's at

    • I thought I was edgy buying a Zune over an iPod.

  • These or 100 Soundcore P20s?

  • Went in a few years back when these were on sale for $3K and A/Bed with Clear (which I own). I was fully prepared to buy, but the SQ difference was not enough over the Clear for the Amex to come out. Might have to try a HE 1 one day;-)

    • +1

These are not the original utopias, they are a new version.

      • So, closer to the HE 1?

        • +2

He1s are in a class of their own, i don't think anything else comes close, but you are paying over 20x the price.

          • -1

@garetz: Might be worth it. Dangerous if I ever hear them…

            • @mostlygordon: I have only seen them sold 2nd hand twice in the last however long they have existed, and they were still over 50k.

            • +1

@mostlygordon: No matter how HE1 good is, it is nothing more than a headphone. It's a bit too germanish to my taste. I would say for this price the sound signature of the headphone is more important than sound quality. Every good headphone has its own sound signature. I spent most time with HE90 and R10, only a fraction of time on HE1. The HE1 amp is a good pre-amp though. I am a bit tempting to get the focal utopia as it is really a good price. But I've already have >30 headphones……just don't have enough time to enjoy all of them.

          • @garetz: Pre-order on the Stellia looks interesting.

    • +2

I heard the HE1, I was invited to audition it by a2a when I bought HD800

All I can tell you is that I have never heard hand drums in Hotel California live version, it was like I was in the front row of the concert.

      • You can hear hand drums in Hotel California if you have Susvara for fraction of the price of HE1!

  • +2

If you get these you know you made it in life 🥹

    • +9

… or just going into debt

      • Dunno, but I'm missing a kidney.

  • +4

How's audio books with these? For reference, I have a collection of Dr. Seuss.

    • +13

Ah, dear connoisseur of the literary realms, prepare to be swept away on a transcendental journey through the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss like never before! As you don these auditory marvels, the mellifluous notes of 'Green Eggs and Ham' will tiptoe gracefully into your ears, each syllable a symphony of sonic perfection. The velvety resonance of the Utopia headphones will delicately caress your auditory senses, rendering the whimsical characters vividly lifelike. You'll not only hear the Cat in the Hat's mischievous whisper, but you'll feel as if Thing One and Thing Two are performing an elaborate dance routine right beside you. Oh, the marvels these headphones shall unveil - the rhythmic meter of Seuss' verses will serenade you with ethereal precision, and the tonal richness will have you convinced that Horton is reciting his poignant soliloquies directly into your soul. With these headphones, the cacophonous cacophony of Seussian prose will transform into a mellifluous masterpiece that even the Lorax would tip his hat to!

      • +1

You had me at Ah, dear connoisseur! Bought a 2nd for the "Office", to place above the toilet roll holder.

Are these made from gold then painted black?

  • +2

you forgot to mention the RRP .. we need to know how much discount we are getting!

    • +4

Well they normally sell for $6999.00 so it's 50% off!!!

  • -7

    Wow… what a ""bargain"" 🙄

    • +15

These sold for more than 4k on the 2nd hand market, so to get them at this price brand new is pretty amazing, so yes a bargain it is.

      • WTH spends $4k on headphones?? Goldears?

        • +1

Yep, the people who have been damned with golden ears.

          Thankfully I haven't.

  • +2

    Are these good for gaming?

    • +5

tbh any thing that plays sound into your ears is good enough for gaming

    • +1

Lucky I got the Tidal Master quality subscription for $10 a month, now I can get a headphone good enough to appreciate songs from Britney Spears the way she meant us to hear it.

    • How do you think she meant you to hear 'Hit me, baby, one more time' …. ?

    • +2

      $10 a month? that from a trial?

Also, going via Argentina route gets it down to 3.50 AUD a month

      • +1

This morning I've received an email from them, saying that from now on they'll require the payment to be made via Argentine-issuef credit cards only. The same day I'm expecting the Utopia to be delivered. And my justification for the purchase was the lifetime savings from the Tidal subscription.

        • Bugger, just saw the email too. Too much invested in Tidal now, but the Australia prices are stupid.
The email mentions MC and Visa, looks like the payment portal accepts Amex as well. Wonder if it will work…

          • @Pesty: I no longer have AmEx unfortunately. But yes, I'm also too invested, but can't afford the local price.

    • +1

      It's $3 a month from Argentina.

      Hand over your OzB license

      • Not anymore - see my post just above.

    • Cancel your OzBargain, Tidal from Argentina costs me less the $2 per month:-)

Ozbargain when $7k coffee machines: 🥰🥰

    • Man I wish we could post actual images. On FaceBook people pull out Photoshop to make a meme just for a single snarky comment, but on here we are stuck with words and emojis, or links to photos that people may not click.

I am grateful shitty image memes can't be shown here.

        • +1

I'm really grateful we haven't devolved to having a Facebook tier comment section.

  • +1

No way I'm paying free shipping for these..

  • +5

Check your hearing before buying, maybe it's not worth it for you 😂

  • -2

Thanks, OP. Listening to 128 kbps MP3 files through these sounds amazing.

  • -2

Thanks OP at this price I got a couple for the kids to play Roblox with

  • Addicted to Audio is also the distributor, or rather, was the distributor. No other distributor has been named as a replacement.

    • +1

Ask Omar. Never use what you deal. Bad for business.

  • I bought the 2020 Utopia from A2A less than a year ago for $3k (they were getting rid of stock to make way for the 2022 edition).
I'm really really surprised how quickly these 2022 cans have dropped in price. $3.5k for them is an amazing deal for what you get.

    • +3

Looks like focal is leaving the Australian market, i wouldn't be surprised if this was close to the distribution price maybe even cost price.

      • If they are leaving the market, why is there a pre-order on Stellia?

        • I suspect they already had that shipment ordered before the falling out, and have a contractual obligation to sell it.

  • +1

Beryllium domes are nice but you can get an old Yamaha NS2000 full sized speaker with beryllium domes for that price, and it will sound much better due to being a (awesome) speaker. It doesn't matter how much money you pour into headphones, they will never sound as good or as tonally correct as a comparable speaker.
