    are these good ?

    • +3

Simple answer is yes. They compete with the Samsung 980 Pro.
Read and Write are 7400/6500 respectively and has a 2500TBW so pretty darn good!

      • Goddamn that makes it viable in a PS5.

        • -1

          No heatsink though…

          • +2

@vicerum: Get the SABRENT M.2 NVMe PS5 heatsink (SB-PSHS) it also acts as the heatsink cover. I just bought it and my all my games work without any issues.

            https://www.amazon.com.au/SABRENT-Heatsink-PS5-Console-SB-PS…

            • @The Krat0s: Will this fit in a laptop?

              • @Boxcuttahz: I can confirm the 1TB fits in a laptop (because I just did) and because it is single sided (chips are only in side of the circuit board).

If the 2TB or 4TB are double sided and the laptop in question doesn't have room for a "fat" SSD then maybe not?

                • +1

@gelilloabad: Thanks for sharing ☺ did you use any heat sink? I want to try the one for ps5 mentioned above 👆 not sure if it will fit inside the laptop

                  • @Boxcuttahz: No heat sink, the laptop had preinstalled some kind of thermal thing in the chassis that makes contact with the SSD when you close it. I would not fit.

        • +2

Honestly almost any Gen4 NVMe SSD is viable in a PS5. Games are not THAT intensive

      • Can these run at full GEN3 specs on GEN 3 only boards? and do they need a heatsink for that?

        • All gen 4 drives should be able to do that. These don't need a heatsink and theoretically should run cooler in pcie 3 boards since you won't be maxing out the controller. I fitted a heatsink on mine, but that was more of a preference.

DRAMless SSD. Maxio 1602 controller with YMTC XTacking 3.0 NAND (3dv4). This combination is optimised for sequential read/write (which does mean SLC write speed, not native TLC write speed). Its random read/write "latency" is inferior to competition, but most people look at MB/s. Mixed usage (something people don't turn on when testing using CrystalDiskMark) is another weak side of this setup.

In short, in general usage, it does quite well, especially in most benchmark tests. It's not ideal for servers though. So, in general usage, it beats 980 Pro, but if you use it for servers, then 980 Pro could still have up to 30% performance advantage. Long sustained write, however, 980 Pro appears to be better as well (but not 30% better).

      1TB version:
      Controller : MAP1602
      NAND:
      Ch2CE0: 0x9b,0xc5,0x58,0x71,0x30,0x0,0x0 - YMTC 3dv4-232L(x3-9070) TLC 16k 1024Gb/CE 1024Gb/die

      4TB version:
      Controller : MAP1602
      NAND string : CYAxxTE1B1xC3B
      Ch0CE0: 0x9b,0xc6,0x59,0x71,0x30,0x0,0x0 - YMTC 3dv4 TLC 16k 2048Gb/CE 1024Gb/die

From that, it seems the 4TB model uses a slightly different NAND batch, could be 128L instead of 232L 3dv4 NAND, shouldn't matter much though. With no big discount from competing SSDs (at least not TLC ones), these SSDs are quite tempting.

      • Latency may show itself as a factor for people picky about NVMe drives when DirectStorage 1.1 and later are in full swing for games.

        • Sequential read/write latency seems decent enough. It's just random read/write latency and that's comparing to Micron 176L NAND. Most games will probably use sequential read and then use RAM or VRAM for things which really need random reads.

          • @netsurfer: I'm more concerned for large textures being streamed to VRAM, yeah.

      • Is downloading is unpacking Linux isos from usenet considered sequential?

        • yes

      • So this thing may be viable for a PS5?

      • +1

How would these fair against the top level Samsung SATA SSD's?

I was looking to replace some HDDs in my file server (one user) but SATA SSD's don't seem to be coming down in price as much as nvme's plus the power consumption on these is good.

I can bifurcate the PCIe 3.0 16x slot with an adapter card.

I currently have 10GbE but probably moving towards 40GbE in the near future.

    • +2

they fantastic, currently running in my PS5 with a speed test of 6255MB/s

      • Did you need to buy a heatsink for it?
        If so, which one?

        • Also would like an answer to this question.

        • +2

Yes I'm using the Jonsbo m.2 heatsink (https://imgur.io/a/y4Kh6Vm) that I got off AliExpress. I removed the fabric label from the top of the SSD as it doesn't dissipate heat very well when using heat pads, the warranty label is on the bottom anyway.

    • 4 TB can be added to a Steam Deck. I am going to give it a go…

tip: hold your purchase till 7PM for 10% cashback.

    • +5

Good tip. Just too bad if sold out or the price is increases before then.

      • +7

I wouldn’t be too upset. There’s SSD deals every day.

      • +1

I was able to add 69 (nice) to my cart, they have plenty of stock allocated. No need to panic.

    • ebay codes and giftcards work with?

      • According to Shopback there are 2 codes listed:

        APAYDAY4
        AUGPNA

As for part payments with gift card it's always tracked / worked for me, I can't say with 100% certainty but if you're paranoid I guess you can pay in full with Afterpay.

        • +1

          Thanks ;)

Not paranoid. Just got no f*king idea with this stuff - always used card or PP. Just got 1 of those cashback accounts, and realised theres a few around. All these percentage savings, promo codes and cashbacks pay for a holiday at the end of year :)

    • Still not seeing any email from cashback about by purchase, anyone else get their $20 from cashback?

      • Mine says pending with no amount. Haven't received an email either.

  • +2

man should i get another one…fab price !

    • 2TB or 4TB, decisions, decisions….

  • +1

why do people say not to get it for main OS?

    • Generally because of lack of DRAM, I try to keep up with all the comments & variables. The size & prices do look very tempting.

    • +2

Don't think there is any good reason not to use it for OS. No DRAM cache, but it has HMB so should be fast enough anyway..

      • +9

I use it as a boot drive, and I don't think any average user is going to notice a difference in boot timings. A few seconds faster here and there is hardly noticeable

        • +3

fractions of a second really. I'd be impressed if a modern PCIe gen 4 SSD was anyone's bottleneck in booting an OS

      • +4

yep i ran a HMB samsung 980 for a while and had zero issues with any application including heavy photo editing.
95% of people wont notice the difference

    • +2

      Ignore them

I have a non dram crucial nvme aa a boot in an editing rig.

Ans a 980pro in another there is same boot times. Perfoemance in windows fells the same

With hbm average person wont notice

    • +3

Because this place has absolutely no clue what it's on about when it comes to SSD's, see also: the inane, "more TBW = more better" type comments that inevitably ooze into 90% of these deals

Long and the short of it is, if you need to ask, I promise it'll be fine.

    • Is the Crucial P5 plus good for OS?

  • +2

    2500tbw. Tempting for lancache 4tb

      • +1

Thanks. Might test my luck .

        • If you get the 1TB or 2TB, let us know how your testing goes

          • +1

            @Look Up: @ChatGPT @kingmoron

Linux Mint does detect 1TB version of NM790. The test I did was, booted PC using Ventoy with Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon Edition ISO, UEFI mode. Physically disconnected all bootable Windows SSDs on that PC before hand. Put 2 NVMe SSDs into the system, NM790 connected to the primary m.2 slot (CPU lanes).

Linux Mint detected both NVMe SSDs. Installed Linux Mint on the other NVMe SSD. Once finished, removed USB stick, restarted the PC. It automatically booted into Linux Mint. Logged in, NM790 1TB detected fine.

Screenshot - Linux Mint, lshw output showing 1TB NM790 (serial number partially masked)

However, the OZBer who pointed out the linux mounting issue has the 4TB version.

            • @netsurfer: Thanks for the test

This says Mint 21.2 uses an ancient 5.15 kernel - what does "uname -a" show in your terminal?

        • +1

ChatGPT is pointing out you may not see the SSD when using linux based on what people have reported. i.e.

I am having an issue with a new Lexar NM790 NVME drive, I see the following error in dmesg:

          [ 3.280583] nvme nvme1: pci function 0000:01:00.0
[ 3.285018] nvme nvme1: Device not ready; aborting initialisation, CSTS=0x0

I do have 1TB version of NM790, but I have other more fun toys I am testing first and haven't got around to trying NM790 with linux to confirm (I don't have a high end NAS that supports SSD caching). With NAS, not only it may not use the latest linux right away, it is unlikely you get to control or modify the boot parameters to workaround any ssd device not found issue.

Interested to know whether NM790 works with high end / proper NAS.

Mine 4TB for my games arrived two days ago and its better than the WD black my OS is on lol

    • it's faster than my 980 pro that's in my 2nd PS5 too lol

  • Looking at the techpowerup review was especially interesting, as it includes a comparison with the sata based Samsung 860 Evo, which was a solid mid tier sata option back in the day. But this seems to handily beat it, despite being "dramless".

  • sub $200 soon for 4TB please

    • A QLC SSD deal was below $200 mark before, but it was a QLC SSD. TLC… we still need to wait, at least in Australia.

    • Am I right in thinking this is sub $200 now with shopback and westpac lounge added? Both have a max discount of $20 which you would hit with the 10% off ebay bonus + 12% off with westpac so that's an extra $40 off 239.70 making it 199.70. Fair enough you need a westpac card for it but anyone can use Shopback bonus to get it for $219.70 which is pretty close..

      • +1

cant use afterday deal with westpac, with afterpay deal you need to pay with afterpay, not westpac

  • I haven't got a spare M.2 slot, can I still connect it to the motherboard?

    • +4

No. But you can get an nvme to pcie card if you have a free slot or USB adaptor. Check to make sure it's a nvme adaptor though

    • If you buy an M.2 to PCI-e riser card, sure.

Is Afterpay Day, alias dictus AfterYay, not an annual holiday? Feels like there's an Afterpay Day every few months now.

  • actually would have a 4tb one to upgrade my ps5 storage from 2.8 to 4.8tb. I ran out of space ages ago.

  • +4
  • +5

Fresh off the press TPU 4TB review.

  • Can u use ebay codes with Afterpay? - never used payment before

    • The APAYDAY4 code is only usable when you pay with afterpay. Only 1 coupon can be applied, no discount stacking.

You can use your gift card balance to make a partial payment if you got any.

  • Will this, specifically the 2, fit in a laptop?

    • Depends on your laptop? My Lenovo ideapad gaming 3 has two 2280 slots. What laptop are you using? Some laptops don't have 2280 slots.

      • Would this fit a Dell XPS 15 9520?

        • You may need to open your case to look at the slot. Dell says M2 2230 / 2280 supported. Could be certain models have different slots or same slot and dual standoff. I know with my ideapad gaming 3 that some motherboards had dual nvme like mine, some had sata, some had M2 2230.

      • I have the a Lenovo IdeaPad gaming 3 as well… Not sure if yours is the same, mine is a couple of years old now, features the i5 and 1650ti gpu. (ideapad gaming 3 15IMH05)

It currently have one 2280 in the secondary slot and the 256g 2240 that came with it in the primary slot. As far as I can tell I just need to remove the big bracket for the sata SSD, and then I can put a 2280 in the 2240's spot… Did you do this?

        • Mine has a ryzen 5800h and rtx3060. I had two 2280 slots but it only came with the standoff and screw for one of them so I had to buy another standoff and screw for my second drive. Mine was located below the numpad area, gets a bit hot due to no airflow in that area, only got a 5-8C drop with a heatsink but it will probably heatsink due to lack of airflow.

Check if yours has a standoff for the 2280 ssds underneath the sata bracket?

  • Also just to confirm, no dram?

  • Can the voucher codes be used multiple times on seperate purchases

    • You can only use this voucher once per ebay account. It's mentioned in bold the Afp deal

      • Am I right in thinking this is sub $200 now with shopback and westpac lounge added? Both have a max discount of $20 which you would hit with the 10% off ebay bonus + 12% off with westpac so that's an extra $40 off 239.70 making it 199.70. I will have to use my afterpay code on this if this is the case..

        • you cannot pay with your Westpac card if you're paying with afterpay. There's no way to mix Westpac + Afterpay payment methods, i.e. it's not possible to get the Westpac lounge bonus.

          • @scrimshaw: damn. I thought because afterpay use my westpac card for payments that it would work that way. So only an extra $20 off with shopback then.. Still pretty good deal at $219.70

  • Can I use the 4tb one for a ps5?

    • Yes.
I am tempted to get one for my PS5 as well.

    • Someone said no heatsink but I'm not sure if that matters or if it's true.

      • I got a $3-ish Jeyi heatsink on mine on my PC, temps went from 74C at full load to 49C at full load (5x 1gb crystaldiskmark runs) so up to you. I did remove the top label on mine though as it acted as an insulator, noticed when temps didn't drop after sticking the heatsink on the label. Top label didn't have warranty info.

        • Any chance they changed the sticker? A new TPU review says that the sticker has a thin sheet of metal.

          • +1

@Hiphopopotamus: Looks like the 4tb has a different layout to the 2tb. Sticker is similar but no metal in mine as far as I could tell. It was thicker than the paper label on my PNY CS2241.

        • If has been confirmed by Lexar rep in previous thread that removing the label will void warranty.

          • @NoApostrophePlurals: In that case do at your own risk

          • @NoApostrophePlurals: Wish these dumbasses would stop plastering labels on their ssds that prevent people form using proper thermal pads & heatsinks

            • +2

@Hawk Tuah: Most labels are fine, like the one on my Samsung 970 plus and my PNY CS2241 and my SK Hynix P31 are super thin paper labels so it doesn't affect heat transfer with thermal pad and heatsink.

The NM790 2tb is the only one I've had where I've had to remove the label to get heat transfer to the heatsink since the label was super thick and not heat spreader label. But it was worth removing it for the 25C drop with the heatsink vs leaving label on.

        • Do you happen to have a link to the sink you got? Sounds good.

  • Talking myself out of getting a second 4tb. Really don't need another.
