Such an unnecessary price for knives

    • +2

You should see how much the block coats on its own 🫣

      • +9

Just looked it up. Disgusting lol

Victorinox fibrox/tojiro dp and a victorinox petty and serated….job done.

        • I mean I like the look of them but that price!!! Gotta wonder how that wood will be looking 20-30 years down the track…

          • +6

@hoxygt: the wood should be looking great, provided you regularly oil it…

            • +5

@jrowls: I’ve got some old wood that’s been oiled over the years and it still looks great.

              • @stingywog: precisely! i've got an ikea knife from a fair few years back that has a wooden handle, it's looking lovely.

it doesn't go in the dishwasher (mostly because i don't have one lmao), it gets dried properly not left wet, and every so often i give it a wipe with a rag with linseed oil. looks better than when i first bought it!

        • Don’t hate on my ignorance, but what’s the diff between the ‘petty’ and the $8 tomato knives also from Victorinox?

          • +1

            @andresampras:

Don’t hate on my ignorance, but what’s the diff between the ‘petty’ and the $8 tomato knives also from Victorinox?

            Perfectly reasonable question.

In part you are paying for the name, materials, construction and after market customer service.

A knife is only as good as it is sharp (no matter how expensive it is).

These will (if taken care of) outlast you cheaper knife, look much nicer and be crafted better with balance in mind.

A Toyota and a BMW will both get you to work and back. One is just more premium and has some extra the other doesn't.

            Hope that helps.

            • @vash5: You've misunderstood my question to Fergy, nothing to do with the wusthof

Was asking about the difference between Victorinox Petty ~$35 and Victorinox tomato/steak knife $8

              • @andresampras: All their knives use the same steel. The cheaper ones have nylon handles, which are more hygienic

            • +1

@vash5: The Toyota will get you to work more reliably.

      • +2

Apparently it smells amazing! Totally worth the $$$…

        • -5

Apparently it smells amazing! Totally worth the $$$…

Im sure Joe Biden will testify that you should never underestimate or undervalue a good sniff 😅😉

          • @vash5: Trump sheep dismiss Trump's endless stream of crimes. Biden goes near a woman at all "lock him up"

    • Nah, its a new price for knives thanks to inflation you know

    • Still with my $60 knife block

    • +1

its all perspective. if this cost more then what you make in a day, then it is expensive. if you make more then this in a day, it's not expensive. especially when it came down from 4k.

would i buy it, no. i like japanese knives better. they are like small forged samurai swords. my knives are fantastic and handmade. stays super sharp for a long time too. i use to have to sharpen my german knives a lot, and now i do it a lot less with my japanese knives.

      • +5

        What knives do you have

      • Which ones did you get? What would be your everyday workhorse for most things?

    • +2

costco had this set minus the block for 399 not a few months back

      What an INSANE mark up.

      • You sure it wasn't just a Wusthof set ans not this specific one?

They have multiple lines at multiple price points.

  • +8

Ozbargain challenge: Bring the price of this down to Anko knife set haha

6 Piece Wood Look Knife Block - $19.00 (was $22)

        • Is it going to feel the same knowing you paid $19 instead of $2K? 🤣🤣

  • -3

    Thanks bought 10

Pffff only 10? You need to up your game son.

I rate this review as highly as the person who wrote it rates themselves:

I rarely write reviews. I am a connoisseur of all fine things. These knives are perfect. Beautiful, functional and super sharp. Worth every penny if you appreciate the best. A wonderful gift to my wife the chef.

Translation "I love showing off how much cash I have by wasting it on overpriced goods" 😀

    • +55

Dunno mate, i just post z deal.

You need to do your own homework.

        • +61

This is ozBargain mate, not ozConsumerReport.

Old mate here thinks he found a bargain so he posted it. Neither you or anyone here is paying him to do an in-depth investigation.

If you think it's a scam/BS then just call it out and let people know. That's how this works. No need to get all passive aggressive on the dude.

          • -7

            @thispasito:

If you think it's a scam/BS then just call it out and let people know

In fact I did but it's clear that I offended both of you.

            • +2

              @billadm: Nope.. not offended.

              You do you.

          • +1

@thispasito: Cheers mate, much appreciated 🙏😊

    • +8

Wusthof's owner travel to Calabria and chops the olive trees with his/her bare hands

      That explains the price.

      • excess baggage charges would have been a b@st@rd

    • +5

They claim on their website: "Our sustainably sourced wood comes mainly from olive trees that bear little to no fruit, due to their advanced age."

        • +23

You seem particularly triggered by this. Perhaps you should take it up with the company instead of random ozbargainers? I mean, what do you want random people on a forum to do about your cause?

          • @D3m3ntia: This has gotta be the most entertaining cause I've come across in a while.
Save the very specific trees!!! I care about that one, and that one, but not those there, and that one over there, and none of the rest.

    • +2

Wusthof's owner travel to Calabria and chops the olive trees with his/her bare hands?

No they chopped the tree with the Wusthof's knife the wood is going to be used on.

    • +1

I reckon you are misinterpreting point 2c "the olive trees uprooted within the nursery by the owner of the same."

I dont think this is saying the owner of Wusthof needs to uproot the trees himself, but that the nursery owner must uproot it, ie, the person who actually owns the trees is able to uproot them.

    • +1

I'm waiting on the set with the ivory plating.

      • +1

I think Calabrian Olive tree guy would consider ivory or rhino horn to Be less of a crime

  • +2

I think I speak for a lot of ozbargainers when I say
    WUSTHOF!!!

    • +7

      Price made me say wusthof*ck!

  • +2

Now that’s what I call a high yield investment

  • Affluenflamation! https://youtu.be/VVe8bPQX4Z0

This price is wild. You could literally fly to Japan (return flights with budget airline of course) and get a set of better quality handmade knives made in front of you, and still have $ left over.

    • Glorious Nippon steel, folded over 1,000 times.

  • +5

Anyone who can afford this and is on OzBargain must have no sense of self worth. 🤓

    • +1

Just a boomer with a few Syd properties 🏠 hehe 🤑

      • Ehehehehe 😸

    • There ought to be a rule. If you shop or browse Myer and you are at Ozbargain, you're lost, and should be banned .
This site is for the chauffeur, not the Lord of The Manor

  • +1

I mean it’s absolutely gorgeous but there’s a ceiling for the price of good knives imo and these are well above that lol.

    • Yep. I paid $155 for a three knife set of Globals a couple of years ago, and they'll do me for my entire life. And even that was arguably overspending when the Victorinox ones are there.

  • +3

Or you can buy 204 sets of Kmart's 7 Knife Block Set @ $9.00
Comes with scissors that they call "shears"!

  • The RRP reminds me of baccarat knives, but those are 90 percent off 😉

  • As a hobbyist knife maker, at this price I would recommend getting a custom designed knife or set from a pro knifesmith. You will get a better quality, handmade product that you can give your grand kids when you die. There are heaps of great people around, closer to you than you think.

    • +7

Why can't I give a kmart knife to my grand kids when I die?

      • Or they'll give you one as you die.

  • +9

If you buy these hopefully you protect them better than I did when I came home to find my sister stabbing a hole in the top of a condensed milk can with my Wusthof chef's knife. We no longer speak 😭

  • too cheap

    • +2

      Found the RBA Chief.

  • +1

unless they are made of gold

    • +1

      Terrible edge retention

  • +1

    Bargain, bought eleventy.

  • +1

To put things into perspective. These knives are likely made of X50CrMoV15 steel. It's one of the better steels used for European kitchen knives. That said, I would not pay more than $300 for this set (not including the block).

I also know nothing about the wood they used. @billadm thinks the wood is BS though so there is also that.

    Not a deal IMO.

    • +2

Yup. You can get a good set of German CrMoV knives for $99: https://www.victoriasbasement.com.au/p/avanti-perfekt-9-piec…

    • +2

If its cheap compared to the everyday insane price then I rate it a deal.

If you don't think these knives are good value or worth the coin fair enough but doesn't make it not a bargain - imo :)

      • +1

        Yep, 100% agree. That's why I didn't downvote it.

Just want to put things into context and inform the people interested.

Edit: I realised I said it's not a deal. I take it back lol. It's a deal for the product but not for a knife.

  • +2

These require constant care and maintenance, you can easily get them for $2200, so the real discount on these is only $350, saying they are half price on the site is misleading.

  • +1

No one is spending this much on knives.

    • +6

I'd suggest someone is, or they wouldn't make em. I know that no-one I know is spending this much on knives but hey I don't know many insanely rich people.

      • +2

I've been on ozbargain for nearly 5 years and this is my negative vote virginity. Usually, I'd just laugh at the trolling but I'm on the look out for external hard drive and coffee beans so couldn't help myself.

The very few insanely rich people I know still care about value for money. I can't really speak to the quality of the product but I doubt many people browsing here are going to buy. Good for us all to scoff and comment at least.

      • +3

Dropping $1800 on a set of knives does not make you insanely rich. Does spending $1800 on an iPhone make the however many million people that bought it insanely rich? Certainly not.

  • lol lol lol
    🤣🤣🤣

  • +2

These are the exact same knives (with the exception of the wood) as these so they wouldn’t pose a good value IMO. One would be paying for the value of the wood, the block and leather, and the extra three knives (which you wouldn’t need anyway) without a shear or sharpener (which would be more useful). They would be fair value at ~$800 imo.

    • I would say their fair value is probably $400 at best but it's pushing it.

German steels are relatively cheap and their manufacturing process doesn't justify anything over that. These have been stamped out of a very efficient German factory and it's unlikely they were hand sharpened by "master craftsman" either

  • +1

Where are all those who were complaining about the price of Z Fold5? 🤣

  • +1

The number of people viewing Ozbargain who would buy this item is: 0

    Prove me wrong.

    This deal is bordline spam.

    • but a good conversation starter in Ozbargain?

  • I can't believe this is considered as a deal regardless the original price. Unless these are AI powered knives that can cut, cook and clean

    • Imagine HAL was a knife ….
