Personal Finance Tracker Spread Sheet $6 (Was $8) @ CompiledSanity Personal Finance

2231

Budgeting for the Commonwealth Games can be difficult – with a good spreadsheet you too can deliver a ($65b?) healthy household surplus.

This formula driven and automated net worth and savings tool has been really popular on OzBargain and reddit, and hopefully you'll enjoy it too! The sheet is made to help track monthly finances and provides a bird's eye view of your financial position each month. For me, I saw the light on how much I was spending on PWC tax advice and not enough on watertight confidentiality agreements.

Changes since the last deal – many bug fixes per community requests, improved connectivity with MorningStar and more to come!

——
FAQ #1: Why should I pay money for this?
The sheet is heavily automated, has live pricing and is a one-off payment rather than a subscription. If you're really interested, feel free to join the subreddit where I take future feature suggestions (and have for the past two years) and other users can help you debug and get set up.

FAQ #2: what permissions do I need to give and what information will you get off me?
All information is fully self-contained within and never leaves the sheet. There are 2 versions of the sheet:
- FULL: Sheet contains the full suite of automated features but requires some more expansive permissions as a result.
- SLIM: Does not support email updates, calendar reminders or the migration feature but has more self-contained permissions for those privacy conscious.

Further FAQs can be found here

Wishing you all a happy tax refund!

What does your spreadsheet actually do / what does it do better than free alternatives?

Just answering to help with a question from last time.

    • Private financial solution compared to other cloud platforms
    • Live ETF, stock, crypto & managed fund prices & tracking
    • Property value & performance tracking dashboard
    • Loan, debt, mortgage & credit-card tracking and metrics
    • Monthly net worth & savings email updates
    • Included budgeting system
    • Automatic FIFO capital gains calculations for sold assets
  • +6

This is a bargain even if you pay the full $8.

    • ^^ This woman/man speaks the truth.

  • +5

As someone with a very small amount of cash and investments under 1k, is this worth buying?

    • +8

Everyone has to start from somewhere! It doesn’t matter how much you have in comparison, just that you’re progressing against where you were previously (life’s ups and downs obviously changing that).

    • +2

      Look up YouTube tutorials

  • +1

Can this also track historical prices for Crypto to calculate FIFO and trades?

    • Yes it can give you a FIFO estimate on Crypto CGT trades, although it comes with a disclaimer that it’s just an estimate.

If your question is will it lookup historical prices, not as of yet but I’m considering it in an update (depending on the ticker).

      • assuming that only crypto, not shares ( asx, lse, etc.. )

    • Why not using trading view ?

  • +4

Hey OP - can you confirm if this is true live pricing? Or is it the delayed free pricing (ie 20mins delayed on ASX)

    • +21

It’s 20 minute delayed pricing as live pricing requires paid integration with the ASX (hard to do on $6!)

    • +2

how much live pricing cost ?

      • +1

If you need live pricing maybe an off line spreadsheet is not for you

        • +1

This is actually an online spreadsheet! And therefore has ASX, Crypto and Managed Fund live prices, albeit with a 20 minute delay.

    • +4

For the intended use of this spreadsheet you wouldn't need live pricing. This is about long term investment and wealth tracking not day trading.

  • +3

    Any youtube instructional?

    • +4

Coming soon, I was flat out releasing v2.13 and will work on it next.

I do have an in-depth guide you can use to get started if you are looking for further explanations of pages.

  • +3

Can this sheet handle importing things like Vanguard managed fund info, as opposed to just exchange fund listed items?

Does this have some simple or guided way of handling end of year AMIT cost base adjustments?

    • +1

Yes it can do managed funds, as long as it’s listed on either MorningStar, Yahoo Finance or FT.com which should cover all Vanguard funds.

The sheet doesn’t include AMIT costs, mainly to keep the sheet from becoming overly complex and as it’s not designed to be a comprehensive tax tool.

      • +1

Thanks ordered but the spreadsheet doesn’t seem to be tracking VDHG, VAS or VDBA managed fund prices correctly for some reason (probably there’s more). The sheet displays 0 as the “live price”.

The fund ID are VAN0002AU, VAN0015AU and VAN0108AU

        🙏

  • +3

Just my luck, paid the full $8 at 8:11pm last night! Definitely worth it regardless for the amount of effort that’s gone into it

    • +17

Shoot me a PM and I’ll be happy to sort you out :-)

  • +2

Would this help with tracking investment property expenses and / or business expenses ?

    • Looks like they track Property Value & Performance Tracking Dashboard and for expences in the monthly budget
I take you were looking to take the investment separately? Probably create 2 spreadsheets, 1 for personal and 1 for your property to manage it separately?

  • +3

Silly question (i hope) but can you save this to your desktop and operate that way or does it have to run through google drive?

    • +6

"Can I use the Sheet with Excel, Offline or Libre Office?
Unfortunately no, as the Sheet is heavily reliant on Google Sheet functions for live pricing, custom Google formulas and most importantly the behind the scenes scripts written in Google Apps Scripts. You may download the Sheet and try importing into Excel, but you will find that significant elements of the Sheet will not work and it is therefore heavily not recommended."

  • +1

How data can be entered into the Personal Finance Tracker Spreadsheet? Is it possible to import from PDF/CSV files if I have multiple accounts?
Will the PFTSS be able to classify expenses and income?
Do I have to manually enter everything into PFTSS.
    thanks

  • +1

I did find some small bugs, but for $6-$8 this is absolutely worth it.. Well done OP

    • +1

If you let me know about these bugs in my subreddit I’ll be sure to take a look and patch them in the next v2.14 release.

  • +5

If you had an excel version, I would get this. I have made my own limited version in excel by getting inspiration through yours but would prefer your version if you had an excel version. I rather keep my financial stuff offline on excel.

    • +2

Oh I didnt even realise this was google sheets, this is even better for me since I need to share with the wife
Literally every week she asks me whats coming up..

      • +1

        doesnt excel have collaborative editing/viewing?

        • Im not using excel, using a budgeting app..

  • Actually have been thinking about something like this so good timing!

  • +3

I still don't know how to operate the sheet properly, personally (been using it for a year or so). I still use it for basic functions, though I don't use 90% of the functionality. However it is a great sheet, there has obviously been a massive amount of work put into it. I would suggest some tutorials of how to use it. Thanks OP

  • +1

Thanks OP, hope I can save more to spend more on deals :)

  • Was looking for one of these! Purchased, thanks for the efforts on its continual improvements.

  • I never got this to work for me, personally

  • got it , thx op

  • +2

I never used a budget app. I have a few questions if anyone could answer.
I use credit card to pay for almost everything. Do I need to manually enter every single transaction in the app or I give permission to track them from my credit card. If I choose to give permission, how do I know it's safe? What ways I can verify the safety and security as a non tech-savvy person?

    • I use basic Frollo PFM and permit accounts via govt CDR openbanking option

    • Good question. Also interested in the answer, OP.

  • +1

What the security like to protect data?

    • +4

Good question! I’ve tried to be very conscious of the privacy side, and I would say this sheet is unique since it’s self-hosted by you with all the inherited security of Google. I also have this the FAQ:

The Sheet has been designed to be completely self-contained. When you download the Sheet and make a copy, it's now it's own independent copy hosted by you.

You can review all the formulas to see how that works, but it's strictly a one way fetch process and if you go Tools -> Script Editor in the Document you can review all the code yourself to make sure it checks out. Furthermore, no personally identifying information or sensitive information such as passwords/usernames are needed nor requested. The only inputs into this Sheet are holdings and amounts, the minimum information needed to determine your net worth & associated performance.

      • Cheers for the prompt response!

  • Thanks OP. I pay hundreds per annum for Sharesight. Very happy to give this a go for the price of a large coffee.

    • +8

Feels bad that large coffees have hit $6…

    • Does the dividend tracking feature for stocks only or for ETFs (or called distribution) as well?

Reason is Sharesight update their tracking once the fund companies (Blackrock/vanguard) provide the tax statement in Aug/Sept and usually have some differences.

  • was looking at getting one recently, just purchased. thanks

  • +7

Don't know if I need it, but I purchased it. Similar to my other purchases via OzB.

  • Any hurdles using this as a couple (i.e. track the combined net worth of our family?)

    • +1

Found the answer in your FAQ

How do I track with my partner?
For couples it is recommended that you combine finances and incomes as expenses will likely be incurred as a household and not for individuals and therefore Net Worth changes need to be considered as a whole.

A key point when combining finances is the Tax rate input in the Sheet Options tab. For a couple in different tax brackets a weighted averaged will needs to be used. Please use the Couples Tax Calculator (bottom left corner of SheetOptions tab in v2) to find your averaged tax rate.

    • Will be totally fine. You’ll just have to set the sheets figures to the sum of both you and your partners figures. Aside from that everything should work fine.

  • +1

Does this cater for couples. As in ability to add multiple incomes, split out budget items to make them easier to update/manage, etc. Or is it more setup for a single person or a "household" where I have to combine all the relevant figures prior to entry?

  • Bought, thanks OP

  • Thanks OP, bought

  • +1

is this a one-time payment with life-time updates? or is it only updates until the next major release?

    • +7

Lifetime updates. I’ve released close to 14 versions now all included under the original cost.

      • +2

That's cool. Rare to find software/apps that offer one-time payments. Usually they come as subscription or paid upgrades to keep it sustainable. Thanks!

        • +7

I think we all have subscription fatigue, so I’m definitely not a fan of that approach. Thankfully I still receive support for the sheet and that is keeping things going :-)

I’m also exploring a dedicated platform for this product with more features, but that is a seperate product vision.

  • This is great. Thanks OP

  • +2

How does this compare to something like wemoney?

  • Looks a great idea in theory. Bought to checkout!

  • Bought 1.

  • Is the sheet hosted on the cloud? Or is it a downloadable app?

  • Can you please keep the offer for at least a few days? (I cant afford it until friday. (Thats also a clue how badly i need it!))

    • +12

Hey mate, if you don't mind I would like to help you pay for this. PM me your beemit or bank details. Would hate for you to miss out!

      • -7

        No thank you

        • -2

Not sure why you got downvoted. You want to stand on your own feet and not take what could be percieved as charity or 'paying it forward'. Your decision.

          • +2

@Filbert: I think the downvotes are because trying to avoid "charity" when you're down to your last $6 is basically bonkers.

            • +1

@Nom: I mean yes it is, but also i am used to living this way; it is a regular occurance, so it's not that big a deal to me. I am trying hard to change things.

            • @Nom: In this society I agree, but in other 3rd world countries they will actually give their last $6 away to someone so that they can eat. To some taking charity means, they believe, they have completely failed. It’s a mindset.
Bit like ‘I don’t agree with your comment/opinion but ok/whatever’ versus ‘I don’t agree with your comment and it doesn’t align with mine, so you are wrong, here, have a neg you jerk’

          • +1

@Filbert: That too. And i was really confused if the offer was genuine. Thanks for understanding.

      • +3

Sorry RIPwallet i hope my earlier reply did not seem rude. Im not the best at working out peoples i intentions, and i am used to people here making jokes, including about scamming people, and i thought that might be what you meant. Thank you again for your offer to help me. I managed to get the deal today myself.

        • +3

No that's completely fine. I didn't take it that way and I wasn't one of the people who negged you. Offer was genuine but I'm glad you managed to get it today. Wish you all the best!

  • +1

I have OCD. Will i like this?

    • +1

why do you like OCD, asking for a friend?

    • +8

Is OCD an ASX or NYSE listing?

    • +3

100%, this sheet is the best thing for those who love to obsess over every little part of their finances, watching the growth overtime is so rewarding.

      • +2

        Thank you

How come you deleted your reply OP?

  • +2

Genuine question (I know it's not an AMA but I'm just interested) - do you earn enough through this to support yourself or is this a 'side hustle'? BTW I just purchased - excellent work!

    • +1

It's a side hustle. Or else you would see other companies do this way too much work.

  • I love excel and you've pot a lot of effort into this. So bought it to check out your formulas.

    • Based on comments above, it's Google spreadsheet?

  • Can we pay in USD? Would be $3.50 in USD which would be less than $6 AUD?

    • The $3.50 is just an estimate for PayPal, so paying in AUD is probably cheapest as it’s the item currency.
