I am once again trying to preach to ozb about the goodness of these budget LOQ laptops. They arent 'legion' amazing, that is true, given them being rebranded ideapad gamings. However, the overall build quality is still miles above shoddy low end MSI and gigabyte using years old chasis and shoehorn them with modern internals specs:

While this is a good 200$ above some 4050 deals posted on here, you are also getting a much more complete setup, there is the mux switch, obviously, its a 95w 4050 (I apologise for before where I mistakenly thought these had the same 115w as the 4060 LOQs), which is right at the top edge of the power to performance scaling for low end 40 gen cards. Which means you are getting the full performance out of these, unlike some shoddy 45w/75w machines I mentioned before. The screen is probably the best part about this, its a 1440p, 165hz, 100% srgb, 350 nits screen which is as good as a gaming panel gets at this price. Last but certainly not the least, you are getting the 7640HS, which means its a proper zen4 chip, and being amd, means it scales especially well in a thermally compromised lower end chasis such as the LOQ, as opposed to other brands loving to stuff in surplus 12th gen intel H chips inside theirs.

Combined with 13% cashback on cashrewards for aforementioned 1.3k pricetag. I hope my math isnt off here. If it is, let me know,

I think you’re right that getting this screen (slightly above average) and this processor at this price is excellent. But it’s so hard to get past just how underwhelming the 4050 is in general :(

    • That is true, its about a 10% difference to a max powered 3060 mobile in games. However, given the lack of any good 3060 laptop sales there are, I think this is better price to perf. Considering that mux less, low wattage 3060 machines with the 45% ntsc 1080p screens will only offer worse performance per your dollar.

      • In that context it’s a good buy for sure. Just a shame the laptop space kinda just sucks in general atm.

definitely, somehow retailers are still trying to clear out 30 gen stock but arent willing to lower pricetag to a margin that would present them as true deals , and 40 gen laptops are as expensive as they are - with most cheaper 40 gen laptops being straight up trash.

This or Legion 5 Pro below?

    $1565 after cashback.

All thoughts and comments welcome =)

L5P is worth the extra 200 or so relatively to this machine, spec/perf wise the upgrade is limited, but build quality on the L5P is there.

Cheaper 3060 machines at 1k are not comparable to the L5P in any way or form.

I would get it if I were you. Also worth a deal posting. I will let you do the honours ;)

    • Any idea if RAM is upgradable to 32 GB on the Legion 5?

      • +1

It definitely is in Legion 5 Pro. I have upgraded mine to 32 GB.

    • Legion 5 Slim Gen8 is better, raw spec wise imo. 7840HS + 4060. The 7840HS's iGPU is also on par with a Mobile 1650, so its even good enough for light gaming on battery. Downside is a worse screen, and allegedly worse cooling.

    Ryzen 5 ! naaa

    • matey using ryzen 5 or i3 i7 i9 etc is a bad way of measuring performance.

this is actually better than most gaming laptop at the price range.

      • -3

No it's not. 4050 is pretty average gpu at best. Ryzen 5 despite being a new version doesn't really compete well especially in single core performance. Screen yes is great! But that's it. For this money I'll buy an Intel NUC X15 for less then 1k off eBay (mwave) and I load it with 32gb ddr5 and 1tb Gen 4 M2. And suddenly this deal becomes crap….

        • +2

you mean the one with a 1080p 144hz panel, an a730m and have no mux switch? mate stop kidding youself.

ryzen doesnt have better single core performance yeah sure if both cpu are allowed to draw as much wattage as they can.

as it stands, neither chassis is great with regards to cooling, and you arent going to go far in real usage with the 12700H unable to draw enough power to make it outperform the zen4 7640HS here.

@Brrrrt: But I will still have 32gb ddr5 and 1 tb gen 4 M2. Not 16 and 512!! And yes I'll pick the Intel anytime!!! 2 years international warranty and you're sure to get updates!!! Updates that will make your machine go better !!

              But I will still have 32gb ddr5 and 1 tb gen 4 M2. Not 16 and 512!!

ram and ssd can be upgraded, you cant upgrade screen, the lack of a mux or anything thats buit into the laptop,

years international warranty and you're sure to get updates!!!

because lenovo doesnt provide updates, ever?

you do realise the x15 is not actually made by intel but tongfang right? you arent going to get better warranty than lenovo.

              • -1

@Brrrrt: can be upgraded? yes sure…. with money. I'm talking at the same price i'll have a laptop with 32gb ddr5 ram and 1tb m2 gen4. SAME PRICE.

  • Hey OP, is jarrods video explaining GPU power in 4050 4060 4070 laptops still relevant?
above 80w is little gain and above 100w is almost zero gain

    • more or less yes.

95w 4050 in this machine is enought to ensure full performance and any higher will see no real gains.

its slightly higher for 4060 and 4070, but essentially.

  • Any idea when cashback expires

    • +1

      ends this midnight

  • So no charging on usb c on this.

    • It does, 100w through pd or 140w through lenovos own proprietory charger on one of the type c ports.

  • sorry sound sour and like a broken record, i got this with the last lenovo cashback they never honoured the payment back. laptop is cool but just runs loud, no issues playing bg3

    • worth chasing up on cashrewards for that. they are usually fine for cashback
