First post. Looks like a cheap coffee machine and only $50 more than the previous all-time low. I'm looking to buy one too but preferably a better model so looking for a used one. But people who might want a new machine might want to take a ganter at this.

This machine is very good, especially for its price. Great coffee, easy to maintain, reliable, lots of inexpensive spare parts.

    preferably a better model

    What is better about it?

More curves than a Hot Wheels track.

  • You can get the newer version Magnifica Start (with touch screen) for $545

The Updated one (ECAM22021BG) is selling on eBay (Bing Lee) for $499 after JULPSNS code.

Touch screens "look" better…but you soon realise just turning a nob is so much easier than going into your settings and pressing +/- 5 times to achieve the same thing.

Also one extra point of failure (logic board needs to translate what a nob used to do).

Get the old one while you still can.

… Screens and apps for everything is making humanity go backwards.

      • It looks like it’s just a static touch-sensitive panel.

FYI the buttons and knobs on the “old one” still translate to a logic board. None of the human interaction is mechanical except the grind size in the bean tray.

Also touch-sensitive panels suck to use, but are less likely to break because there aren’t any moving parts.

I hate unnecessary touch UI also, but in this case it doesn’t really change much.

        • Yeah agree with most of what you say, & I havent seen the Delonghi's actual UI. But other manufacturer have made a mess of it.

Having an actual knob/ dial makes diagnosing faults much easier. Turn this, measure that. I was just repairing a Jura and couldnt manually activate a switch to diagnose a stepper motor.

A/Cs are a classic example. We used to repair them. Now you take out the whole PCB and bin the lot (as its a pandoras box of interaction).

So I think coffee machines are simple devices. Grind coffee, heat water. Keep them simple. Same as a TFT on a fridge. Not needed.

  • I bought a used Magnifica for about $100 a few years ago and it is still going strong. One of the best purchases I've ever made. Super easy to clean, makes decent coffee for a super automatic.

Opp, all models have the same brew unit internally. Just the GUI and milk steaming function changes.
In the end you will find the best hot coffee will be made by manually frothing your milk, then manually setting the length of your shot (visual colour of stream coming out).
Auto milk frothing is a draw through system and will be colder and not mico foam. Auto shot length is risky as no two shots are the same (grinder spins the same number times, but doesnt mean the same number of beans will slip through each time).
In summary, the cheapest model has everything you need.

    • Question, based on the blurbs I read for higher end machines. They have more recipes and some of the higher-end ones even offer coldbrew. Did you find that a lower-end model machine was also able to do a coldbrew or a workaround to also achieve the same result?

      • Cold brew is just grounds steeping in cold water yeah?

Heaps of ways to achieve that. Test mode has the answers.

But you could just do a single shot, then press off just after grinding. This will dump the grinds. Fill up with water, come back later.

Alternative. Put in descale mode with just normal water. Put said ground coffee in ground override section. Then it will slowly pass cold water through a puck over time. Sounds gross…
