this is not a deal unless it's $200- $230 delivered in my opinion.

    • +1

Yep. I'd rather build an Intel G540 system for around $200 then spend extra for the microserver..

      • +1

What partlist & case would you recommend for something like that? Could be tempted

        • If you want to go that route, I'd save myself some work & go for this: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/79117

Bear in mind though, these are different classes of machines…

        • +1

As you said….. that's a very different kind of beast. You're comparing an entry level PC to an enterprise class micro server with worldwide support. The PC option might be all some people need, but I certainly wouldn't discount the HP over a couple of bucks.

While this price isn't the best deal ever, it certainly seems to be the best one around at the moment.

      • +6

It's a very valid point if computing power is your concern.

That said, when I bought my N36L I was very interested in power consumption given I wanted it to be a 24/7 machine. As a result, I opted for the less powerful N36L with it's sub-60 watt footprint under full load as opposed to a desktop with a few hundred watts more consumption. As a result, my power bill for the machine is highly minimal.

Just a point that may help people decide on a micro-server or an alternate solution.

      • +1

There's a great market for a Microserver over your suggestion. Having had one for the last year, it's a fantastic small NAS that runs a full operating system to run XBMC on the TV, store 12TB worth of data and a lightweight torrent box - all of this at an average load of 38W per hour (running media boosts to approximately 50W with an additional low-profile Radeon 5450).

Building a G540 system for sub-$200 would assume a full-size motherboard that doesn't share the same distinctiveness or power efficiency of a Microserver.

        Some food for thought:

Assume electricity price is $0.22 per kWh (note the recent increase in cost per kWh).

        Daily Usage: 0.038kW x 24h = 0.912kW
        Yearly Usage: 0.912kW x 365d = 332.88kW
        Total Cost: 332.88 x $0.22 = $73.23 per year

Not sure about what system you have in mind, but I'm assuming at least double this at 80W+ per hour.

        • +6

Although your figures are spot-on your terminology is a bit off. Watts (W) is a measure of instantaneous power and kWh is a measure of power use for a certain period of time so it should be written:
          Daily Usage: 0.038kW x 24h = 0.912kWh
          Yearly Usage: 0.912kW x 365d = 332.88kWh
          Total Cost: 332.88 x $0.22 = $73.23 per year
….and there should be no "per hour" after 80W.
Sorry if this is just me being pedantic.

Yeah I think shopping express offered them a couple months back for $239, so not a great deal in my books!

Its good value , its been around $400 for a while.
Thanks for the heads up , my mates been chasing one since he saw mine

  • can some1 explain why prices have gone up so much since just 4 months ago when i purchased it for $209?

N36 was $160 a year ago. HP realised they were selling it too cheap.

  • +6

I guess if you will only pay cost or have the patience, skill, time and inclination to build your own then this might not be a bargain but for the average Joe who has been looking for this at a discounted price and wants it now then it's the cheapest price I could find anywhere. They are selling (or at least advertised at) $299 - $350 at most places. Hope it helps someone anyway.

    • Well said & appreciate you sharing this on ozbargain faster than me :).
From what i can see from my end :
If you purchased at a lower price at an earlier period of time - you made the right choice at the right time.
For those still looking to get 1 of these - this is a BARGAIN.

        • Thanks! Have just sent through these to our technical department. Hope it gets sorted soon. Would be even helpful if you can advise if you are using a mobile device to browse and what screen size was it?

        • Obviously not a mobile device because the screenshot contained a chrome desktop window. Window was 1024x768.

        • thanks :). Got back with the following recommendations:

your size of 1024 x 768 is supported but it seemed you may not be using the default font size that might be causing the problem.

          Suggested solution:
          reset to default font size

        • Hmm, that little gag wasn't well received.

I was only being quasi-facetious though; I do think Chrome is an awful browser that is vastly overrated. I do understand that it is considered 'fashionable' to use Chrome nowadays though, despite it's considerable failings!

I'd be happy to entertain comments from any of the folks who disagree pointing out why they think it is so good? ;)

        • I think you hit a nerve or maybe too off-topic. At the risk of more negative votes I do find the Iron Portable iteration of Chrome useful without all the Google spyware.

        • Yeah, I'd venture the first one…there's always a segment of the IT community that gets quite parochial over whatever the next big thing is…irrespective of it's foibles! Iron sounds interesting, will have a peek…thanks for the heads-up! :)

Im not saying that im annoyed about the price. i just wanted to know why the price went up so much. The service from Shopping Express has been very good in the past and the N40L that I got for you guys is amazing. So are the 120gb SSD's :)

        Let's be honest here…

If -you- decide to pay an -excessive- price,

You've -agreed- to pay an -excessive- price…

If we -all- formed a short-term "buying group"
        & ordered "many" N40L's together…

we'd be doing something for -ourselves-
        for which we might bet a -lower- price;
shipping costs could fall, as well as unit cost.

Have you explored any other ways to reduce

IMO anywhere up to $300 is a good price for these boxes, don't forget you still have to fork out on bunch of HDD's to slap into it!

Tip: Put the 250GB included HDD in the top ODD tray (with a $2 3.5" HDD mount)

    • +4

I put a trayless HDD rack in my optical bay. I can't remember how much it was but it gave me an extra HDD that I can swap easily. Unfortunately it's not hot swappable, but not a deal breaker.

I swapped the 250GB for a SSD and installed it under the HDD rack. It's not secured, but it's SSD (can take a knock or two) and I never move the microserver. I've also installed a USB3.0 card.

These microservers are worth it even at $265. Yes they WERE cheaper once, but I doubt it'll get that low any time soon. Don't let the price put you off, they're still good value.

  • +3

ShoppingExpress Rep: Thanks for the PM you sent me the other day saying that this deal would be on, but I thought that the discount would be a bit deeper. 11% off the $299 you were selling at, to this price of $265 isn't that much!

As mentioned (@tettybear), prices are much lower in the UK (~£180 shipped to a UK address incl VAT) when you take into account that HP UK are underwriting a £100 rebate. That's £80 on the doorstep next to the milk. The Ozbargain spirit would have us ordering in mass from Blighty and arranging a shipping container!

Is there anything you can do to sweeten the deal some more?

Separately: Has anyone got a view on the QNAP TS-412 vs the N40L? I can't decide…

    • +2

:). Believe me: All sorts of sweetener have already been put into this deal before launched - raw sugar, artificial sugar - you name it. At the same time, the stocks of these are very limited & i mentioned earlier - this is a BARGAIN from what i can see. However, it is up to you to make the decision.
I can only say on each post: Those that purchased earlier - you've got the best timing.

      • Thanks

stocks of these are very limited

Limited in Aus. The UK site I checked says "Availability: 953 in stock"

      • Well I understand that we have missed the last deals and you are doing your best price, thank you. However if you could make it $250 delivered, I am definitely in for 2.

probably another 2 for my mate too.

        • +3

I will be in for $250 delivered… please rep make it happen :)

        • +1

I would def be in for $250 delivered too!

    • +1

Rebate is for UK residents only I believe.

After keeping an eye on prices for a few weeks, I bought one of these for $299 at Shopping Express just a few days ago (it arrived on Monday), and that was the cheapest delivered I could find, including importing from the UK - not that I would have looked at every store on the net of course ;)

With an extra $34 off on top of that, if anyone is considering buying one soon, I would be jumping at this price, personally.

Have a look back at sales prices at dates, and you'll see they've gradually gone up over time. As much as that sucks, it's still the reality, and I'm guessing some people waiting for the previous low prices, could find themselves waiting a while. Maybe they wont? if so, good luck them.

      • Rebate is for UK residents only I believe

True - but OK if you have rellies there and can use them ;-)

That said, I think the shipping/delay/any warranty issues from the UK are a dampener, so I just bought one from SE.

Here's hoping that if ShoppingExpress rep comes in with a sweetener (not the sugar variety), they'll do the right thing by people who've already bought from them.

BTW, why doesn't SE accept credit cards? Probably the usual "We get charged 2%" reason…?

        • Thanks for your business :).

As to regarding payment with credit card:
You can still make payment using credit card - just need to go through the paypal checkout page first (you don't need a paypal account to pay using this option).

  • reasonable deal… yes.
    bargain…. no.

  • +1

    Perfect timing for me.
Bought one so it's +1 from me.
    Thanks OP.

  • Would this be appropriate?

I need a small and quiet server to run Jahia (Java CMS), JBoss Application Server, a couple of Java server apps for a very early stage startup (low hits anticipated to start with and will move to AWS when needed ;-).
Probably min 8GB RAM and a "server CPU" (optimised for server apps not desktop, gaming etc, if that makes sense).
Don't need much disk space, and would include SSD, if that would help server performance (better match CPU).
Minimum graphics card just for running Linux desktop.

If not, any suggestions? Thanks, Ashley.

    • +1

I'm not familiar with those applications or the critical nature of your server, but unless you need huge amounts of CPU grunt, for the price, it would be a great little box to start out with and later you may decide to upgrade or buy a second one for redundancy or load balancing if possible.

Just to give you an idea, as I found the specs a little underwhelming at first on paper - I run mine at home with Win8 with Hyper-V, 16GB RAM, 8 VM's atm with guests being Win2K8R2(AD,Exchange/SQL/Xenapp/XenDesktop/SCCM) with the VMs and Host on an SSD and I do not notice any slowdown. Using Dynamic Memory, I know I could load more VMs without a problem as well. It starts up and shuts down and snapshots quick and is always ready for me to jump in and configure. Of course, I'm not doing much on it as it's just a lab + media center but I remain impressed.

  • Rep, I'm looking to get another one of these.

Any specials you can offer on 3TB drives and RAM?

  • There is a fair amount of interest in servers like this on OZB, maybe we should figure out the cheapest way to build our own/source the parts?

  • which graphics card on your website would you recommend goes with this?

    • Once you've opened one of these suckers up you'll realise what a premium space is inside there…you need to be sure that it's not only low profile but has a svelte heatsink as well. If you're a windows user I'd be looking for the ASUS silent Radeon 5450/6450 cards…if you plan on linux then look for a Nvidia variant!

      • Thanks Stewballs, was thinking of buying graphics card with HP 40L but can't see any on the site

      • Hi StewBalls,

Just wanted to thank you for always helping out on our post by providing useful information. It would be appreciated if you could open your PM features on ozbargain :).

        • I have enough trouble keeping up with my public messages nowadays, let alone PMs! ;)

        • For the love of all that is holy, does ANYONE know when HP is releasing a new model? I'm googling and posting and hunting and I'll be damned if I can find any solid information if they even plan to, it's madness - considering the huge sales that this thing had.

        • Hmm, it sounds like you know roughly as much as the rest of us then! ;)

I've heard nothing concrete even in the way of rumours about the supposed N45L…I wouldn't hold my breath, if you want a microserver I'd just snap up a N40L, particularly since you can pretty much guarantee the replacement will be a fair bit dearer for early adopters! :)

        • I've got 3 of them,………….. I just need a bit more beef for the one in the loungeroom, damn thing practically runs my house.

        • I've got 3 of them…

Just spitballing here hamwhisperer, but have you considered that you may have an addiction? ;)

Just got one. I'd been eyeing it for months.

So at this point just this:
    Microserver
    8 GB RAM
    120 GB SSD

    To add:
storage (probably 4x 3TB HDDs, WD Green)
USB TV Tuner (dual or Quad)
    Low Profile Graphics
    IR receiver+Remote

I would like some OzB tips on three of the above items:
Aim: XBMC and Win7 compatibility with minimal fiddling
I will be using the Custom ROM out there that enables the additional SATA options on the MB

    1. Which USB TV Tuner is compatible with both XBMC and Win7?
    2. Which Low Profile Graphics card (model and RAM size) so works well with both XBMC and Win7? Must have HDMI as that is how I will connect to my receiver
    3. Which IR Receiver+Remote combo?

Which are the best guides out there to setup XBMC on this microserver. I found a thread on Whirlpool but it's dated around April. Was wondering if there is a newer descriptive thread that I can read up on?

  • Is it compatible with Windows Home Server 2011?

    • +1

yes, I am currently running it.

      • good to know that! thanks

  • Have 3, love them.
DYING for HP to release a model in the same or very similar form factor which is at least 30 to 50% faster on the CPU.
Wouldn't be upset about USB3 either but I'll take what I can get. All the googling in the world isnt' helping me find if they plan for a new one though. The N54L was just a prototype or something with the faster 2.2ghz AMD chip, no word if it would ever be released (I'm guessing it ran too hot for production use as a proper server)

Wouldn't mind a CPU which supported all the VM functions which allow USB access with ESX either (I am not technical enough to know what they are, I just know the N40L cpu isn't capable of native USB access from a VM under ESX)

  • I've been doing my research (there's some nice videos on installation on Youtube as well: Search for N40L) and you can add two PCI-E cards (one of the videos they add a USB 3.0 card with two ports). So think about the intended use (Media Server, NAS) and add the needed cards.

My current idea is massive NAS + SnapRAID software and then store all my media on it. Then use my media player (Astone) to get it through my receiver. Then once my media player conks it (maybe 1-2 yrs) then I'll think about if I want to make the N40L XBMC+NAS.

I could just go XBMC+NAS but still reading on whats involved and whether Windows or Linux would be the more reliable OS to use for it (NAS+XBMC+PVR).

    • Hi amaslam,

How do you connect the NAS to the Astone?? as I have as Astone as well?

      • There are many free NAS out there (or just use Windows). The HP shows up as a Network drive and on the Astone you use the NET option to get to the files on it instead of HDD. I have an older AP-360T but most or all Astones should have the NET option.

Both the Astone and NAS will be connected to a Wired Ethernet switch but as long as both are on the same network this should all work. Mainly network speed will matter most for HD sources (i.e. 1080p MKV files).

  • I've decided on Media Server. So here's the plan.
    ATI Radeon HD 6450 (techbuy.com.au) - Ordered
120 GB SSD - Have it but need SATA cables to install it.
SATA Cables (ordered): 1. MOLEX to 2x SATA Power 2. eSATA to SATA 3. SATA to SATA
    8 GB RAM - Installed

    Software:
Windows 8 x64 (yup it works just fine and detects everything) - Installed, need to reinstall or move to SSD once I receive my SATA cables.
    XBMC 11.0
    SnapRAID
    Couchpotato
    Sickbeard
    SABnzbd

    Thinking about:
USB 3.0 PCI-E card or SATA3 PCI-E card (for the X1 slot). Looking for a combo card that has both because I only have the one slot after everything in. The X16 slot will be for the video card

Still waiting for a better price, they're around the $160 mark now, once they hit about $120 then I'll see about a bulk order. I'll start with the 250 GB included to finalise out the OS/RAID/Software setup and then pull it out to replace with the large drives.
5x 3TB WD Green HDDs, would've liked 4TBs but they're still way to high and not dropping anytime soon. Gotta watch out for that 8 second idle setting it has and reset that to 5 mins.

The plan is to rip all my DVDs (estimate 500 discs) to ISO and all the other media from my media player (about 700 GB)

    Future upgrade plans:
    1. USB TV Tuner to make it a PVR (once the HDDs are in)
    2. 6 TB drives (3 yrs from now), let's see if there is a good successor to the N40L by then.
    3. Emulator Gaming (NES, SNES, Gameboy), already have the ROMS just need to see about wireless controllers

Anyone else done this who has some tips? I think the RAID software should have some fans for/against.
