I was considering this for the parents, but they'd go bonkers if I took away the DVD drive.
Need to see if they do some cheap external ones…

    • I remember how hard I pushed my parents to get adsl and once they finally got it they couldn’t live without it…

      • How old were your parents when they got adsl?

        • Prob 20 years ago so mid 50s

          • @WhyAmICommenting: Wow! How did u do it? Back then there wasn't even streaming. I can't even convince my ma to get internets at her house, and even though shes in her early 60s, she just believes theres bad stuff on there - my sister is very similar on that level too - and she is 20 years younger.

    • Can pick one up for $60 at JB Hifi or cheaper on eBay.

      • +7

        This is ozB, not ozGetGougedByJB

    • +3

I know the Lenovo Tiny's have an optional external DVD drive that stacks/clips neatly on top of the Case with identical footprint as the PC.
      We had them at work.
      https://images.harlander.com/artikel/1000x1000/lenovo-thinkc…

    • What do they use the DVD drive for? And how often?

      • Movies and music.
Music daily, mum likes it while she cooks.
Movies only on weekends as far as I know.

        • +1

As long as you include the cover art, you should be able to transition all of that to a giant HDD and, bonus, no more CD/ DVD scratches.

          • +7

            @jcon: Oh, I have a FLAC copy of all their music, I run a small homelab and a rackmount ZFS server;
But without buying a HUGE pile of USB sticks and labeling them all, I can't figure out how to reproduce the tactile experience of "putting in a disc" that they want.

I did that for the car for them though, just made 10x USB sticks with an artist or genre per stick.
Could have gone with one big USB stick, but then "How do we change the disc?"

            • @MasterScythe: Put them into Youtube Music. Show them that they can pick the songs from their smartphone (I assume they are willing to have one) and it can be streamed to the speakers in the room / car.

They should appreciate no more changing of disc.

              • +8

@wildstone: Nope. We tried that solution. They're actually quite tech literate for 70, but it missed the tactile feedback.

Another issue, was that, yes they have smartphones, but if they take a call (and they take MANY) the music stops.
And what if dad has a song playing and mum wants to pause it?
Finally, last I checked (genuinely, I haven't checked again, it might have changed) Youtube Music had ads or a subscription.

I used to work in a specialist HiFi store, and you'd be shocked if you've not been exposed to it, how often the BIGGEST complaint\feedback is that they want to 'browse the shelf, and put on an album'. Even the younger gen semi-often has the same feedback.

Trust me, often the "best" isn't what people actually "want".
Offer me an Auto 2023 Audi? And I'll keep my Manual 90's WRX thanks.

CD's and Vinyl are to music lovers, what books are to readers.
Lots of people still prefer the book to the PDF.

                • +1

@MasterScythe: Cool then. Perhaps it is really hard for a moderate person to understand or appreciate an enthusiast's preference to the sentimental usage of things.

But to answer your questions, if the music is streamed, as in pushed to the speakers connected to Chromecast for example, the music shouldn't stop even if the call comes in, don't quote me on that as I haven't tried it. An alternative way is to have an iPad/tablet to pick songs then push it to speakers so phone is always free. This way if mum wants to pause it, she can go to the iPad to do it, instead of going to the PC/player. Tell her the music player is now portable and smaller and can be carried around the house.

The last time I used Youtube Music for personal libraries (personal uploads), they are ad free and do not need subscriptions.

            • +1

@MasterScythe: My head hurt reading that.

Try getting a bluray player for their TV or a proper sound system.

              • +1

@ColonialBoy: Oh the sound system is amazing.
Merantz amplifier, prima luna preamp and DynAudio speakers.

The TV does have a dvd player, but they're old folks and just often already comfortable at the PC. So they use both, they both work fine.

I do some home IT services after hours and you'd genuinely be surprised how often CD and DVD collections are still in readily accessible places, and clearly used.

            • +2

@MasterScythe: The YT channel RMC The Cave came up with quite a cool solution to this - a barcode reader. People who visit 'The Cave' just pick something from the retro physical storefront and scan the normal barcode on it - then the machine involved boots the program in the package they just scanned.
That way he can display sealed package stuff and let people play it. Couldnt be all that hard for someone who has gone as far as you already XD

              • +1

@mycosys: Thats a fun project idea!
It's similar to a jukebox I built for dads Bar.
He had an old genuine 70's jukebox, with no electronics left but speakers and lights.

One tripath amplifier, a rPi 4, original buttons wired into GPIO pins on the Pi, and mounting a 'digital photo frame' (most have AV-in pins internally) where the 'track list' rotadex used to be, resulted in a fun modern FLAC powered jukebox.
Physical buttons, modern music storage. Fun times!

Next project upgrade will be to replace those 10x60w internal lighting bulbs with LED or at least CCFL, because running the thing is a power-sink, haha.
Should be able to drop it down to 120W (12w LED bulbs) from 600w it is now.

                • @MasterScythe: Been meaning to do something similar to a 1948 STC Console radio i picked up for years. No lack of parts but i keep moving house XD

    • SFF (Small Form Factor) ones usually come with an optical drive:

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204134057498

    • +2

The SFF version of this (HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF) has a DVD drive, if larger footprint is an option.

    • +2

Maybe this one for $135 with DVD drive
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/134639053845

    • +2

For a compact low power machine for the parents with a DVD from the same seller/deal i'd probably go with this
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204059990913
~$150 Decent looking Fujitsu, Low power i5 6500T quad core, has VP9 decode for youtube etc , 16G, 512G SSD, and DVI as well as DP, DVI is just HDMI with different wiring so $5 adapter should be reliable, DP to HDMI is a minefield. Gotta admit dat serial port makes it pretty appealing to me too

      • Good call on that model.

    • Can get a pluggable usb c one for 20 to 30 bucks, that theyll maybe never use

    • Saw a few of these https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204059990913 on there, some say "no optical drive" in the description but not all of them.

      • bah, not eligible though

        • Come to think of it, coupon doesn't work on the original deal either: "This code can't be applied to your order"

  • +1

Would this be good as home plex server? Cheers

    • +5

It would make an excellent plex server

      • It's great for this if you arn't transcoding (if you're using something like a decent pc or a nvidia shield or something as the player you will be all good.) The 6500T doesn't do 10bit HEVC or VP9 but the 7500T does. Just something to keep in mind.

    • -2

I used similar and experienced quite a lot of lag, switched to Emby and it works perfectly. Plex seems to be much more demanding but doesn't really provide any advantage over Emby.

      • +1

Strange, I run plex on a prehistoric i7-920 SSD Boot, media on USB3 and it seems to do just fine. I don't do 4k transcodes though so perhaps it may struggle there.. But I'd say that would be an issue with the outdated GPU

    • It's better with Emby or Jellyfin; but yes.

    • +3

Depends how much transcoding you'll be doing. 6th gen is fine, 7th gen onwards is better.

    • depends if you want to transcode stuff, and what. For just serving files off USB drives, sure. For transcoding multiple 4k AV1 videos to your mobile, not so much - you would need a GPU which you cant add to this.

    • Get 7th gen intel for hardware transcoding.

    • The Lenovo M720Q for something a bit more powerful (and likely more energy efficient) and with newer hardware encoding.

  • What ports does it have? The optional ports are all listed but according to the HP website only one can be chosen.

  • +1

Weird coincidence that this video popped up in my feed this morning:

    https://youtu.be/amVP96OYfUg

Looks like a neat little computer.

    • +2

Yes in fact I got it to dual boot it with PrimeOS and use it as PSP/PS2 emulator. Great as a retro games machine

    • For anyone curious, the mini PC reviewed in the video is actually the i5 6500T which is slower but much more energy-efficient:

    • +2

Did you click on the link and check the condition??

    • +3

      The title says "[Refurb]".

    • Newly refurbished.

    • +1

      New to you

  • -1

Too small to make it as a NAS.

    • Theres 7 USB3 ports and a 4x and 1 x NGFF PCIe you could use for storage externally tho

      • NAS with external drives via USB 3? Would SATA connectors be for reliable?

        • you can run a raid with sd cards, but yes get SATA and some proper nas drives.

        • +1

Im not saying you should - even that seller has way better options for the same money (something with actual PCIe slots for a host bus adapter), but its been done

  • +1

Have always held off on similar deals for the point of "do I really need it". Couldn't resist this time. Shall connect this to the tv in my room for those times I need to use my personal laptop, which is stashed away.

Any recommendations on a display port to hdmi adapter?

    Thank you OP!

  • What does Optional HDMI mean..? This has or does not have HDMI..

    • +5

      It has DisplayPort ports.
Optional = buy a separate mini card addon.

  • +1

What about this one with i5 9600T 2.30GHz 8GB RAM 256GB SSD for $311. 6th Gent to 8th Gen, is worth paying double ?
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/185279867656?hash=item2b238a6b08…

    • You're not getting double the CPU power/RAM etc, probably 15 to 20% power boost max. Is it worth paying double? it's subjective

    • +3

8th gen is better for Plex transcoding using the iGPU - particularly if you want to transcode 4K

    • +1

The reason people will pay double for 8th gen is it is the oldest intel that will easily run Windows 11. If you arent planning to run it as a Windows11 Desktop then no

      • +1

It's also the newest platform that came off the auction fleet. Next year, when the 10th gen fleets comes out, 8th gen should see a drop in price.

  • Is the onboard NIC using an Intel or Realtek chipset?

  • Is the 8gb Ram using one slot or is it 2x4gb?

    • +1

Just got mine. A little, but it's only using one slot.

  • Does anyone know where to get the rubber feet for these? My one from a previous deal is missing a foot and won't sit flat.

  • +1

Dell equivalent is the same price, with 1x HDMI & 1x DisplayPort, instead of 2x DP.

  • I've been led to believe some mini-PC box like this could be useful for a CCTV system running BlueIris - has anyone used something like this for such, and if so, what spec would they recommend ?

e.g. first glance I don't see 8 sockets for 8 PoE cameras to plug in so I don't know how the setup would go …

    • You would need to run a PoE switch to power the cameras. Won't get any PC that comes with 8 ethernet ports to supply PoE. Switch such as https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/netgear-8-…

      Blue Iris - https://ipcamtalk.com/wiki/choosing-hardware-for-blue-iris/

      • 'You would need to run a PoE switch to power the cameras. Won't get any PC that comes with 8 ethernet ports to supply PoE. Switch such as https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/netgear-8-…'

ah - OK thanks - so … I can get a cheap mini-PC for under $200 maybe, but then would need to spend another $200 for a 8-Port PoE Switch … ?

we have an existing DaHua 8 port CCTV NVR with 6TB HD so I'm wondering if/when/how any such switchover could be planned … ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        e.g. would a 6TB HD fit into such a mini-PC ?

and would the 8 port switch then plug into a single port in the mini-PC ?

        thanks if you would.

  • Can you plug an Egpu into this machine with the USB C?

    • No. And even if they can, you don't want to.

    • There are SFF machines for the same money (or less) that have a PCIE 3.0 x16 slot. You can either put most of these in another case with a little work or use a PCIE X16 Riser and external GPU & PSU. Jank but cheap.
