Family rate still relatively reasonable. Still yet to get pulled up for sharing with 2 friends and my brother who don’t live with me.

    • Agreed. Is the only risk in creating a family account where everyone doesn't live with you, just a possible cancelled account?

      • -1

        Yea

      • +5

how they even gonna cancel someone on this
It's not like netflix where you might expect it used on a TV or computer staying in the same spot (with same ip) for a family account

But i (and many others) probably use spotify 90% of the time on my phone, connected to a car all over the city

    • yeah, I'm on the fence there. we are sharing between 6 - so now 3.50 per week each. created the family account because all four children had individual plans
I'm happy listening to the 'wireless', actually mostly Double J
      .

      • +3

        3.50 per month you mean?

        • yep
          .

    • Been doing the family plan with mates for several years that have never lived with me and never had any issues either.

    • just go the the cancel screen and they will offer it to you for $12.99

      • Didn't work. It was offering $12.99 for an individual account, not family.

New poll option. Don't care, not currently subscribed and not planning on it.

    • +1

      That's pretty much number 5.

      • +7

True bargainer does not pay any subscription fee and has his own way to listen or watch anything.

        • +13

true ozb just has a single room apartment with no decorations or expenses and a light bulb that is powered by a bicycle they found on the side of the road.

          • @coffeeinmyveins: Where are they going to put all of the Lego, Eneloops and all the other unnecessary items they impulse purchased on Ozbargain? To Be an OzBargainer you need at least one spare room for storage.

        • I've always thought Spotify would need to cut it's prices if it were to be value for money for me. Stick with ViMusic.

Are their any streaming services which are worth more than $10pm ?

      • Sort of but not quite.
It'd be more like ' I sing to myself already '.
Whereas I'll sing to myself instead, states that in future you will sing to yourself but currently you may or may not sing to yourself, there's no clarity regarding current singing situation.

    • -3

You're the same guy who always has to press the button at the pedestrian crossing when you walk past it, even if you don't actually need to cross the road, right?

      • +1

        What makes you think that?

  • i'l stay and cop that $1.

  • +6

Is Spotify increasing the royalties to musicians/artists?

New poll option - don't pay Aussie pricing

Honestly, why would you?! It's easy to setup overseas pricing

    • +7

Better yet if you got a Android, install xmanager and pay nothin.

    • Is it worth it if you're on a student plan?

      • Is $6/month worth it to you?

        • Mind if i ask what you pay for international pricing?

    • +10

how are you blaming an australian politian for price increases from a US tech giant?

      • +3

Their fiscal policies help determine the value of the Australian dollar.

        • But one would recognise that monetary policy and global commodities prices would have a far greater impact on the value of the AUD, not to mention the current strength of the USD against most other currencies.

          • +2

            @ginormousgiraffe:

not to mention the current strength of the USD against most other currencies.

but do mention the weakness of the AUD against pretty much every other major currency.

        • It’s much more impacted by interest rates. Would you like the RBA to raise rates more to increase returns thus currency flows into Australia, hurting our exports, borrowers and unemployment rate so you can save a dollar a month on Spotify?

          • @freefall101:

It’s much more impacted by interest rates.

Which are impacted by government policy.

            • @jv: So you’re saying Labor policies are keeping interest rates down and you’d rather them go up?

          • @freefall101: That sounds pretty good to me, i know where your horse is in the race.

          • @freefall101: It's not just Spotify pricing that is affected by a weak Australian dollar. Almost everything physical we buy is imported from overseas or the pricing is set by the global market. A strong Australia dollar benefits almost everyone, especially the poor.

            • @RefusdClassification: The economy is nowhere near that simple though. Push up interest rates and strengthen the dollar and we’ll see a growing trade deficit, job losses and a worse housing crisis.

There’s a reason China artificially kept their currency low for many years, it made them an exporting giant. Neither high nor low currency is “good” on its own.

      • -2

Spotify is in the land of Abba and Volvo's.
Since they lost their false allegations against a famous Australian nerd they have to retaliate. Albo's listen to mao speeches do not help!

From a Albatross speech earlier this year: 'Labor has real, lasting plans for cheaper electricity, cheaper child care, cheaper mortgages and cheaper medicines and Medicare.' 100% of what the ALP asserts is lies. ALP apologists instead claim it is the LNP's fault. They refuse to accept responsibility for everything that is going wrong. All they care about is their "tax cuts for the rich" ie tax cuts for people like themselves.

  • New poll option - I have an iPod classic with 80bg of music on it and I don't need to listen to any new music as most music released in the past 20 years has been shit.

    • +4

there is lots of good music, just finding is a pain in the ass
there are literally millions of songs out there made in the last 20 years, but good luck finding the good ones

      • Tbh one way of finding is just through word of mouth. Perhaps onetwothreefour or anybody else could share some of their exquisite taste in songs with the rest of us?

      • I use a radio station to find my new awesome tracks. Pick the show with the music genre you like and you can listen back months of shows. https://www.pbsfm.org.au/

    • +5

most music released in the past 20 years has been shit

I always find this sad. That some people can only enjoy music that they listened to during their childhood/teenage years - and then everything else is "shit".

      • Happy to be proven wrong.

        • +3

I'm not trying to "prove you wrong", I merely feel sad for you as there are been tremendous music produced since the turn of the millennium. There is good and bad modern music, and there is good and bad older music. The last two decades doesn't have a monopoly on shit music. I don't know what sort of stuff you like, but I do try to encourage people to branch out and not just write off something because it's "new". Also remember that what gets deemed "pop music" only forms a minority of what the industry is producing at a given time - there are whole other genres!

Happy to provide some recommendations if you give me somewhere to start :)

        • +1

I used to think like you. Then I started working at a place which had Triple J on all day, and I suddenly discovered there were plenty of good songs being made. Just listening even to the Fox I discover music I'd dismissed as trash isn't actually good.

      • +2

Old people do not like change. Also, there is the back-in-my-day mentality:
        * kids were respectful
        * we worked harder
        * times were tougher
        * sports were better

None of these are actually true but people will have selective memory..

        • It was always sunny when I was a kid too.

      • My son who is 17 plays guitar in a band with friends. When they practice its all the old 90s songs by Nirvana, Radiohead, Chilli Peppers etc, so its not just old gits like me that think the older music was better.

        • @johnno07 this comment is a good place to start with your recommendations.

BTW I'm not saying there's no good music these days, but most of it, particularly mainstream music is just bad. I'm happy to listen to new music and even more happy if it's some I like.

        • My son who is 17 plays guitar in a band with friends. When they practice its all the old 90s songs by Nirvana, Radiohead, Chilli Peppers etc, so its not just old gits like me that think the older music was better.

1990s kids play 1970s music like Queen
2020s kids play 1990s music like Nirvana
          2050s kids play 2020s music like ???

Some of each generation's "shitty music" will be the next generation's classics. Older music was better because get off my lawn. :)

          • @eug: Not sure many 90s kids were playing Queen in the middle of the grunge era tbf.

            • @Brianqpr:

Not sure many 90s kids were playing Queen in the middle of the grunge era tbf.

They're just examples. Just replace Queen with whatever was popular in whatever circles you're thinking of.

The point is, "good music" always changes with time, and of course music is incredibly subjective so there's that too. There are definitely 17 year olds who play 2000s-era Powderfinger, The Killers, or Foo Fighters too.

    • +1

      Okay old man

  • I'll sing to myself instead

Can I pick this one too, I will need someone to do the sax intro for careless whisper tho

    • +1

I'm happy to play the saxamaphone to you.

  • +1

How much is that in Turkish Lira ?

    • Mine's still in filipino pesos…

      • I'm considering switching to Nigerian Naira now…

  • +2

How can I say this… an 8-letter word that rhymes with warrants.

    24-bit FLACs or go home.

Also an option for very little money

    • -1

Agreed. 24-bit itself is kind of a scam, but when it's free, it's free. Better to put the money saved from subscription/data fees on a higher tier storage phone/SSD/SD card etc. for those files.

  • +1

    Aren't we all 'Turkish' Subscribes?

  • +1

Very happy with the free service. I have absolutely no intent of paying for this type of service.

  • +2

I just have a phone app where I can ahoy matey music for free.

  • Family plan in Turkey is going up by 30% - from TL49.99 to TL64.99. After suffering the Aussie price for so many years, I'm happy to pay the extra 82c (per current exchange rates) per month.

  • I rely on Ozbargain vpn to get cheap one

  • +2

Just pirate Spotify and free yourself.

Not sure why people complain about begging but then continue begging.

    • +7

Just steal your groceries from Coles and free yourself.
Not sure why people complain about cost of living but then continue paying for groceries.

    • How?

      • +1

Presumably through stuff like unlocked apks on Android, or ripping the .ogg files off the desktop app yourself. But if you're going to go that far, imo it's not really worth doing all that. Sound quality on Spotify is sub-par, so if you're going to pirate, you might as well do it right and directly find the albums themselves, unless you really like their interface etc.

      • Do you have an android phone?

        • Yes

          • @TheCunningLinguist: Go to mobilism, Balatan version of Spotify.

Uninstall your current version, install the "new" version.

Login as normal, and everything will be as is.

  • -3

This is what happens when people fraudulently sign up via VPN — honest Australians pay more. It’s a zero-sum game

  • YouTube premium is going to go up before the end of this year too. Already pricey at $15!
Netflix, prime, Spotify, YT, Disney, etc etc.
Going to have to start chopping out the subs.

    • Travel overseas for them ;)

      • Some doesn't seem possible anymore, like YT Premium :(

        • +1

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14076883/redir

There's always ways to not pay full price

Except Prime, I pay full for that for the free shipping

          • @spackbace: Same, I'm in turkey for Netflix
            Couch surfing for Disney+ (free!)
            Grandfathered for YT (A$11)
            Don't really use Spotify
Prime is prime because free ship
Apple TV is occasionally on trial
            Paramount is occasionally on trial
Need to spend my audible credits to cancel that

        • You can use Revanced for youtube

  • +1

I don’t think they’ve bumped the price in the decade or so I’ve had it, seems reasonable to me. That’s less than inflation.

  • I guess it's only fair since they screwed up the billing on my account for the first 3 years I had it, and I was paying nothing… I guess I've got some catching up to do in bill payments.

  • +2

I thought people stopped paying for music about 25 years ago ?

  • I have a hacked version of Spotify on my Android phone. No ads, unlimited skips, direct access to songs. No downloading though. Been using it for years.

  • Go to mobilism, Balatan version of Spotify is the amazing. Android only.
