It was a great day when I sold my MX Keys Mini … such a bad keyboard

    1. backlight is ridiculously annoying always going on and off

    2. keys are crap to type on .. feel good but just dont work for fast typing

    • +10

Is it just the mini that’s crap? The way people talk about the mx keys kb, you would think Jesus invented it with help from Steve Jobs and Ghandi

      • +2

I ended up with a rattling sound and returned my standard MX keys. Got a mechanical keyboard instead. Way better value.

        • What mechanical did you get?

          • @NigelTufnel: Keychain Q1 on sale. $179. It was an old version so needed tape mod but sounds fine now.

The only bad side is after 14 months the key cap stems easily break and the replacements they send (support is decent at least) don’t match since mine is an old version.

        • Haven't had these issues with mine. Been using it for 1.5 years or so now but yes agree about the fast typing part. Was wondering if it's just me cos yea haven't seen anyone else talk about this. Not sure what other keyboards people recommend for multi pairing and non mechanical.

      • You take normal PC keyboard, disable few useful keys & it becomes Mac keyboard (designed by Steve Jobs - the master of marketing ;)
I have the MX master, which has Mac|PC tags & it's good for multiple devices but doesn't compare with 13+y old mechanical Logitech G110 (extra gamers keys, I don't use) - on special, I grabbed 2 & still great.

        • +1

What are the useful keys that are "disabled" on mac keyboards again?

          Like, printscreen?

          • +1

@pizzaguy: Home, End, print screen, page up, page down are all missing from the windows MX Keys mini. All these can be reached by a combination of Ctrl+ arrow keys (or something like that), but it was annoying enough that I sent the keyboard back after 15 minutes usage.

Got a Lenovo Thinkpad Trackpoint II instead which I love. People hate the swapped Fn / Ctrl keys, but it's the same as a Lenovo laptop, so if you're a lenovo user it's a good outcome.

            • +3

@braddsey: I have the Lenovo as well. I love it. I remapped the caps lock to be another Ctrl key.

      • Like I said .. the keys feel really good and you may be be fooled from this great feel … but they are not good for typing.

Not including the logitech bolt receiver is borderline criminal.

  • +1

    Images look like ISO :(

    • ?

      • WahhhhWahh referring to the keyboard being a UK layout instead of ANSI.

  • Does the Mac version support pre-boot usage (e.g., for going into recovery)?

    • +1

Does not support FileVault login, and apparently also not working pre-boot unless you use a bolt receiver if I understand this correctly.
      https://www.reddit.com/r/logitech/comments/nayq19/mx_keys_ke…

This is what has been holding me back from getting this keyboard for years, instead of the apple magic keyboard.
Other issue is that their new version of Logi Options+ is pretty bad and quite buggy.. Couldn't even get it to launch after giving all the required permissions… Have been stuck in the "circle circling" without launching.. Was trying to pair it with an MX Master 3.
Had to search for a while through reddit to find the solution.. It was just 'working' the previous older version of Logi Options, so this has been quite a frustrating experience given that this is only software related.

      • If that's the case for the "Mac" version, then there's basically no reason to get it.

        • Yep no difference with the Mac + Windows version, still need the bolt receiver, which.. is not included… duh

    • +1

Never used Mac .. but all the Logitech USB receivers (eg Bolt, and the various others) have worked great for me in the BIOS/UEFI and Grub with linux installs.

      • +1

Problem is, the Mac version of these devices (which do support Bolt) doesn't include the USB receiver. I was wondering more in terms of the K380, which doesn't have USB receiver pairing capabilities, but does have a Mac version

          1. If you really want the crappy MX Keys with Bolt, you can buy the Bolt receiver for $20 from U-Mart or buy another Logitech product that includes the Bolt receiver like the Logitech Lift ergo mouse (or other Logitech products).

          2. K380 is not full size keyboard .. some keyboards are sold with full-size 'keys' or some other marketing trick but measure the distance from the centre of the A to L keys and it is not the same as a standard keyboard.

          3. K380 is only bluetooth .. how's that going to work in BIOS/UEFI?

          • @matt-ozb: Bluetooth doesn't work with BIOS/UEFI on a regular PC. But with Macs, you can pair a keyboard when you turn it on, as opposed to just within the OS. After that, you can use enter recovery, choose boot drives etc. by holding down a key.

            • +1

@happychappy1: Ahh ok .. interesting. Thanks. I guess the Bolt adapter is a back-up plan if the bluetooth fails during boot.

Despite the misgivings of another user here, I love this keyboard. As beautiful as the full size mx keys to type on, the white leds look spectacular against white keys, and unlike black keys, you hardly, if at all, ever see fingerprint marks on the keys - a really annoying aspect of the black keys of the full version. On that note I also wish the keys on MacBooks had a white option as oils on this keys are the worst.

Yes the leds algorithm for auto on/off could be improved and maybe they will in future firmware updates.

    • 'future firmware updates' .. seriously? .. you still have hope after 2-3 years of waiting?

    • Nah, has a kind of its own and always will.
      Still, like my full size.

  • +2

Shouldn’t these peripherals be mass produced and sold for like $10 considering it probably cost China $1 to make 🤪

  • +2

Thanks OP! I love the full-sized version of this keyboard for its typing experience, but dislike the numpad. Ordered this one.

  • Thanks OP!

I've got a mechanical keyboard and it's a bit too loud to type on (kids in the room next door). I prefer a mechanical keyboard but I also need a quieter keyboard in certain situations. I also have a tendency to smash my mechanical keyboard.

I gave the misses my MX Keys when I purchased touchid magic keyboard. I have since regretted getting the magic keyboard - what a crappy typing experience. Looking fwd to using the MX keys again and I'll probably extract the touchid button out of the magic keyboard.

    • Received my MX Keys Mini. It's like typing on butter - so good.

      Negatives:
      - Does not come with Bolt receiver. Grrr.
      - Cannot operate in wired mode (using USB cable).

If I am to connect my keyboard to my dock, I need to buy a Bolt receiver. Robbery.

It is really nice to type on compared to the Magic Keyboard and @ $85 it's worth paying $20 for the receiver.

      • What’s the use of receiver when there is Bluetooth?

        • +1

Less interference from other Bluetooth devices

        • I like to connect my input devices to my dock/hub so my want is for it to connect to the computer that is plugged into the dock without me thinking about it

  • Can’t ever go back to normal size keys. I have to use the normal work keyboards made by dell/Lenovo/microcrap and it’s like pushing down on a mallet

    • MX Keys Mini is a full-size keyboard .. both keysize and keyspacing.

      • Key height I’m referring to

  • I love this keyboard so much, and the hotkeys for the emoji menu, mute, and do not disturb mode. Oh, and 100% the easy-switch so I can use the same keyboard on multiple macs/devices.

The only downside is that on first boot there's a few second lag at the login screen before it starts typing. But that's all 3rd party bluetooth keyboards afaik.

  • Nice - even has the big enter.

    • I think that's just a sample image. AU version has the smaller Enter key

I have had this keyboard for over a year now, and have been perfectly happy with it.

It works well, keys have the right amount of "feel". I have few other keyboards (Keycron K2, Logitech K380, etc). I personally like my Macbook's keyboard the best, but this is the second best option.

I really like the feature of multi-device connection since I use it to flip between my phone and laptop, all the time.

  • How does this compare to the apple magic keyboard? I currently have the Logitech K380 and actually dislike it. I need to be able to type fast.

    • +1

Apple magic keyboard is better in terms of typing speed. I have both mx keys (the large version) and magic keyboard.

      • Cool thank you, will probably bite the bullet and buy a magic keyboard.

    • K380 is a mini keyboard .. not full size

      • Im aware of that

  • +1

I love my regular MX Keys but hate the numpad so this is tempting. However the presence of that stupid emoji key and the lack of backwards compatibility with older Logitech USB dongles meaning that I have to upgrade my MX Vertical as well to one that works with the Bolt receiver means its no bueno!

  • +1

    Just received mine.

    Initial impressions:

The writing on the box and the paper inside have text in a different language, not English. Not a big deal since it makes no difference to the keyboard itself.

    Positives:
+ Good typing experience (I already have MX Keys full-size and Apple Magic keyboard with Touch ID).
+ Turned off backlight using Logi Options+ software as I find it distracting plus it saves battery.
+ The usual MX Keys benefits like the little circles on the keys and the raise at the back.

    Negatives:
    - wish the left and right arrow keys are full-sized.
    - no Touch ID (will be using Apple Watch instead, not as convenient but works ok).

It will take some time to get used to F7 and F9 not having the Previous and Next symbols for controlling music. Looks like it is possible to map them to change their functionality. Not an issue since I use Alfred for these anyway. At the same time, the screenshot key is quite handy.

    • I'm in a similar situation as you. I also have a Magic Keyboard for the TouchID, and that's all I want it for. I will be ripping out the TouchID button to create a standalone fingerprint device out of it.

The following site explains how this is done: https://sixcolors.com/post/2022/08/my-touch-id-button-is-ful…

3D model for enclosure that I've ordered using CraftCloud: https://t.co/Z0m3avmvGf

Unlocking the device with an Apple Watch only takes you half way there. If you want WebAuthN and other TouchID functions, you'll want that TouchID button back!
