do these even work well? what's wrong with the old string floss?

    • +2

      Reusable and can go deeper.

    • +4

I just purchased one, my justification for it was.. I always tell myself I'll be good and floss but I hate it, and cant be bothered.
Using a waterfloss has been good so far, I also picked up some tepe easypiks to have a poke around with.

      • +6

You don't have to floss ALL your teeth, only the ones you want to keep.

      • How often are yall flossing??

    • +3

One thing for sure if you have braces, it makes you feel much better.

    • +3

My understanding is that these are not a replacement for flossing but rather an addition to your routine. They don't offer much benefit either, the only people that really benefit from these are people with a lot of fillings.

      • +5

I floss with string first then use water floss after and I’m always amazed how much food is still stuck in my mouth especially around the molars, water floss is essential imo

        • +1

Does it cut yo teeth n gums like a water jet?

    • +1

Yes. Nothing wrong with the old string floss, can only anecdotally tell you after a BBQ or whatever, I take a good solid 5min on the string floss, after that I have a 1-2min go on the waterpik and there's still some stuff I can spit out.

Most importantly you can shove the nozzle straight into teeth cracks, from front and back, at the back of your mouth that are otherwise impossible to floss.

      Source: Trust me bro.

  • how are these compared to the colgate ones?

  • +9

Bought this (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0B3XCHQNL?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_…) for $40 a few weeks ago, and very happy with it.

    • I have a very similar one that I’ve been happy with but i lost the charger. I might grab this one, cheers.

Edit: looks like a sale is starting in ~17 hours.

      • +1

Where does it say a sale in 17 ish hours? Curious about this flosser…

        • It says upcoming deal under the price on the Amazon app

      • Be much cheaper just buying a replacement 3rd party charging adapter surely?

        • The socket has a weird shape. I tried using one from a beard trimmer but it wouldn’t fit.

Plus this new one has a medium setting which will be good because my one only has soft and normal and the normal mode is brutal haha

      • @KIKH sale ended before I could order one.. but the white went on special - got the white for $42.50

    • -1

built like shes lost her glass slipper

    • Thanks for the link. I bought the white one for $42.49. I think the discount ends in 10 minutes.

Check quora for comments by many dentists - essentially wont harm … but little benefit.

    • +9

I have lots of love for them quora doctors and dentists.

  • +3

Dentists generally suggest actual floss over this unless if you have arthritis or something that prevents you from flossing. These are really useful for getting pieces of popcorn kernels stuck in your gums out though

    • I like to use both. I'd use a string floss a couple of times throughout the week and then this in between. Helps me to floss a lot more frequently.

      • +1

I upgraded from long strings to, floss picks instead hahha

  • +4

Bought mine in like 2007 when you had to import them, and I keep finding new uses for it all the time. Most recently used in repairing my car's radiator (to remove gunked on leaking coolant). And yes, regardless of what any mainstream quack tells you, these are better than flossing and much quicker too.

    • +8

They don't replace flossing, as they can't scrape the "film" of plaque off the sides of your teeth, which is half of the job of flossing.

      • They absolutely can, and they can do it in places flossing can't, such as in the concave "valleys" of molars.

        • +1

How does water scrape a film off something? It's not a pressure hose.

This is the main reason dentists will give you to recommend not replacing string floss with these. Ask a dentist.

          • -6

@Wolfenstein98k: I guess you didn't know that water is what cuts canyons, or that it's used to cut holes in metal, and never seen a pressure washer work? But for some reason you think a string of teflon - one of the lowest friction materials known - will scrape off anything at all?

            Ask a dentist.

If your reasoning heuristic is to simply regurgitate whatever authority tells you, there's no point in debating with you since you can't think for yourself. I suggest you learn some critical thinking, starting with the fact that medicine is mostly garbage:

            https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/jo…

            • +1

              @umexcuseme: 1) floss doesn't use Teflon

              2) yes, using this would wear a hole into your teeth if you left it running for a few million years

              3) it is fine to "appeal to authority" in basic cases requiring expertise.

For instance, I wouldn't service my own car because taking it to a mechanic would be "appealing to authority". Same for if my child needed surgery.

Dentists are the equivalent. They know more about your teeth than you do.

          • @Wolfenstein98k: Think "touch free" car wash.. similar idea

  • +1

I swear by water floss but I know it doesn’t replace an actual string floss, they have different roles

  • Don't buy Waterpik. Their AC/DC converter isn't properly rated for AU and stop working after a couple months. I went through 3 (warranty replaced twice) before giving up in a 2 year span.

    • +3

I have been using one for 3 years without any issue.

    • +2

Been using for 2 years as well, no issues.
YOu can get em off of shaver shop etc as well

  • +8

Water flossers are pretty good at dislodging debris, but do nothing to "scrape" the sides of the teeth (eg brush the faces of the teeth that the toothbrush can't reach), which is an important job for flossing.

Use these if you want, but don't stop string flossing, and make sure to scrape the sides of each tooth.

  • +3

Big Thanks OP, we are just looking at buying yesterday and full price is really expensive so we backed out.
After seeing this, we bought one immediately.
Keep up the good work with the rest of ozbargainers in sharing. Cheers.

    • Life is better when sharing. Cheers.

  • +4

I went to dentists and they suggested using Pikster or floss. Waterpik does remove debris between your teeth but it does not clean the sides of your teeth. After I switched to Pikster, my dentist seems to be happier than when I used waterpik…

    • +1

      Pikster

Wish these things would fit between my jammed up teeth, floss always frays which is annoying

  • Does it wash off plaque or sugar substances that are stuck to your teeth. Seems like it wouldn't do anything

    • +2

No. Only loose parts between teeth & soon after eating. For other uses it's like running watter over oil.

      • Does it wash off that hard calcified plaque stuff?

  • +3

As someone that gets food like fibrous food like steak and lamb stuck between crowns and normal teeth would one of these portable water blasters help dislodge better than floss tape, the flossing with tape seems to make my gums really sore and sensitive with repeated attempts to get the stubborn bits out.

    • +1

      I must be masochist then

You might gotta do more often get used to it

    • +1

That seems like a sign of gum disease…

      • Damn hopefully not!

  • +2

I wish I bought one earlier, 90 seconds on 10 gives a way better clean than floss (YMMV)

  • Anyone knows how to compare with this one
    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/138511?goo…

  • Thanks OP! just bought one with topcashback

  • I have both the corded version and the battery powered one. The corded one is MUCH more powerful and efficient. I’ve used the corded one for years and it works well. Possibly not as good as flossing, but if you have tight gaps between your teeth, it functions VERY well in preventing periodontal disease (for me, anyway).

    • Make sure you use string floss and scrape the sides of your teeth if you have periodontitis, or are approaching it!

  • Didnt think i needed one. Got on. Cant live without it now…

  • For those who received offer can stack with 28 degrees CB- add something else to make up to $75

  • I see that Waterpik suggests replacing the Classic Jet tips every six months.
Can care be taken to avoid the need for this, such as being gentle, cleaning (e.g. with vinegar), and/or using distilled water or something?

  • Ebay Chinese ones are much more powerful.

  • Got the Ultra Professional for $130+ from Amazon a few weeks ago. Costco also has Ultra + Cordless Plus for $149. Thinking of returning the Amazon one (still sealed) and grab the Costco one instead, but perhaps the Ultra Plus here should be enough.

    • If you travel a lot then get the Costco one but I thought Costco‘s one was $159.98?

      • That’s probably a different bundle. The current one they are selling is just $149.99. I saw one box that’s different from the rest in Lidcombe but there was no price indicated.

  • ThanksOP! I purchased the $181.78 one even though I already have a toothbrush.

  • Out of all the models (across both brands) that are on special, which one would be the most powerful/ effective?
