  • Sorry, wasn't HMB slower than anything with DRAM for large files a couple of years ago? Has this changed?

    • +1

It's no longer as clear cut now. Newer SSD controllers can perform much better and DRAM + QLC vs DRAMless + TLC gets interesting.

Need to take everything into consideration nowadays. Unless you are getting a SSD for a server, then you probably still want DRAM.

@O O Nothing against you or the product but Centre Com is officially on the sh*t list after their behaviour on the Epson printer deal

Never before has a retailer made a price error, accepted payment, shipped the stock and then mid-transit, recalled the delivery back to the warehouse without explanation

Tagged for all future Centre Com deals

A selection of problematic Centre Com deals:

Epson Ecotank ET-4850 4 Colour Multifunction Printer $249 in-Store Only + Surcharge @ Centre Com
    Kingston Fury Beast RGB DDR4 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 3200MHz CL16 RAM $109 + $5 Metro Delivery ($0 VIC C&C) + Surcharge @ Centre Com
    Gamesir GP-S Gaming Mouse Pad (300*250*3mm) $1 + $5 Delivery + Surcharge @ Centre Com
    Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 6700 XT Gaming 12GB GDDR6 $499 C&C + Surcharge @ Centre Com
[NSW] Samsung 128GB EVO Plus (Sold Out) $10, Samsung 512GB EVO Plus $69 C&C/ in-Store Only + Surcharge @ Centre Com

Why does the stock management on Centre Com's website suck so badly?

I was buying some stuff in-store the other day and asked them about why they keep cancelling orders. Found out their back-end is complete garbage.
It's possible for there to be, lets say 5 in stock, and it would allow infinite amount of online orders to go through because it doesn't update in real-time, or fast enough.
It's actually best if you go in-store to buy it because, and I suspect, it's possible for you to buy and receive the card in-person ahead of an online order that was placed first

    What's wrong with Centre Com?

Bottom of every page: "Centre Com reserves the right to not make a loss"
Translation 1: "If we fark up the price, we will not honour the price, hold your money and then stuff around before refunding it"
Translation 2: "Our stock availability is unreliable. When we don't have it in stock for the special price, we will gladly sell it to you one day later for a higher price"

Agree. Centrecom should be banned for unscrupulous business practices. Imagine having to deal with these clowns if you have any issues.

      And anyway it's cheaper here:

Other retailers had recalled shipments to be sent back before. Amazon just did something weird where some people who purchased 990 Pro 1TB early got theirs cancelled, but people who purchased theirs a bit later went through.

Centrecom service is not great AND you can get different service from different staff. However, the $229 for a 4TB NVMe SSD deal was legit.

Some of the OZBers comments were speculations and can be incorrect:

It's actually best if you go in-store to buy it because, and I suspect, it's possible for you to buy and receive the card in-person ahead of an online order that was placed first

That was not true when I was in store purchasing a discount item from Centrecom. I only wanted to buy 1, but the staff told me he would check to see if they have stock for 2. I asked why 2 since I only wanted 1, he told me someone placed an online order ahead of me. When he returned with 2 of the items, he set aside 1 for the online order first.

Don't tell people to go in store to gamble on the off chance to snatch someone else's online order placed earlier. That's just wrong. If other OZBers managed to order before you and got their items, be happy for them. Don't go dodgy and try to snatch theirs then blame Centrecom system.

Harvey Norman did something even worse to me once. I called and asked to confirm an item is in stock and was told it would be set aside for me. Yet, when I arrived at the store 30 minutes later, I was told a sales person sold it to another customer. They did not call me to let me know (I provided my mobile number) so it was a wasted trip.

Two wrongs don't make a right

Other retailers had recalled shipments to be sent back before.

        Who and where?

The Epson BS is not just a shipping status change

        These are printers that:

        1. Have been paid for
        2. Have been picked, packed and physically left Centre Com
        3. Customers have been advised have been shipped
        4. Whilst in transit at the Aus Post DC, Centre Com unilaterally cancelled the order and recalled the shipment back

There is no universe where that can be seen as customer friendly behaviour

Any noise about going into a store to physically buy a product at the deal price is BS

If you cannot run an online store, stop pretending, shutdown the website and just trade from the physical stores

The fact that @beetran has been silent on all these Centre Com farkups tells you everything you need to know

Bottom line, Centre Com will not be trusted for any future deals

        • Amazon USA did it to me once years ago (but that was before Harvey GST). There was another big retailer that has done that, I cannot recall which one, but it is a public listed company / retailer.

I understand the frustration and yes, the shipment recalls happened after the items had been paid for (that's a given, why would a retailer ship something that hasn't been paid for).

Any noise about going into a store to physically buy a product at the deal price is BS

Even if it is not a popular deal and not a deal posted on OZBargain? Frankly, I don't bother with Centrecom deals posted on OZB because with my slow speed, I have no chance getting them regardless of whether it is online or in store.

Centrecom's system is not good (it is actually possible for the store price to be higher than the price listed online) and cannot cope with OZB. Centrecom won't sell at a loss. I have no issue if OZB wants to ban Centrecom deals.

    • You are right in commenting this. The price difference advertised here looks like its likely another "pricing error".

What upset me about Centre Com's reply, was the vagueness in providing resolution.

They admit error, state the money is in the process of being refunded, and should be provided in a "few todays"…

But then at the letter, they thank me for my patience?!?

As in, I concede a delay in them providing a refund? I don't think so.

I've lodged a dispute because it's the only way I know I will get most of my money back in a given time.

That clause about Centre Com reserving a right to not make a loss is meaningless. How can a consumer be under contractual performance in avoiding Centre Com not making a loss? Even as a shield, it's meaningless.

      • You really think this is another pricing error despite:

        • It has already been pointed out that price is not the cheapest. Amazon AU is cheaper.
        • There is generally not much interest on this SSD at this price.

I don't get why people would think at this price, Centrecom is not going to honour it. The price is at best in the norm of the current market (to be honest, it is not a competitive price).

I get Centrecom's service is subpar, but refund taking days to process is partially due to credit card companies. Amazon credit card refunds don't magically get processed in 1 second (still take days). Harvey Norman's refund for online orders can be slow too. Paypal regularly deduct money from me and I still need to wait days for it to come up.

How can a consumer be under contractual performance in avoiding Centre Com not making a loss? Even as a shield, it's meaningless.

There are 2 ways: (1) Assuming all Centrecom online deals cannot be trusted and buy in store or (2) Don't buy from Centrecom.

It's easy to bash Centrecom because they hardly have any great deals nowadays.

        • Amazon have some amazing deals though:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/769555

If it's cheap on Amazon, that wouldn't necessarily discount a pricing error.

It's taking more than days to process the refund, it's looking closer to weeks now, whereas they told me it would be days.

Paypal shows the status update of a refund pretty quickly, even if the money is delayed. They've yet to contact Paypal.

          I'm not bashing Centre Com.

I think the approach of only doing in-store buying is best.

Whereas for Bunnings, I'd instead recommend click and collect, because they're inventory process can waste time.

  • Even cheaper with code SSDay.
    I'm tempted for $287
