NEEWER X14 PRO Remote Teleprompter $130.20 (30% off) Delivered and 20% off Other Items @ Neewer

180

The site shows a 20% sale banner, applied at checkout. It's 30% on teleprompters and some other things — ie this overpriced ringlight

The X14 Pro is $225 at Amazon. The x14 is $215, with five coupons for $170, which is what started me down this rabbit hole in the first place. I still haven't worked out what makes one a "Pro".

I'm not yet convinced I need an autocue. I'd like to do more in this field and can see how it would take reading-to-camera to a new level. On the flip side, it's a killer for spontaneity, it means more work in script production and reading-to-camera is a pretty boring and lazy approach to making content.

My understanding is Neewer's a solid if budget brand. $130 seems a good price in general for a teleprompter like this (connections, control, wide usability). A quick google search shows stupid prices at Ali and B&H ($250-350).

Anyway, I think it's a Sunday morning bargain. Hope to hear some thoughts.

Features
NEEWER X14 Pro Teleprompter enables you to read your script verbatim and look directly into the camera when recording a video. Since there is no need to recite the script, you can be more relaxed and have natural communication with your audience. It is compatible with tablets that have a display size up to 14". Compatible with iPad 12.9" iPad Pro 11" iPad Pro iPad mini, and all types of smartphones on the market.
Download NEEWER Teleprompter App from major app stores for free, and manage all your scripts effortlessly. You can import, compose, edit, and customize your scripts, and use RT-110 remote to manipulate them remotely even when recording the video all by yourself. Compatible with iOS 11.0/Android 6.0 or later. Note: The NEEWER Teleprompter app only supports uploading txt and doc, docx format files.
The beam splitter glass features two sides: a transparent side for the camera to shoot videos and a reflective side that displays the script for you. The hinged frame can tilt at 135° for desired viewing angles.
The drawstring hood made of durable polyester can fit lenses of different diameters and prevent light from getting in. With the magnetic rods inside, the hood can be stretched or collapsed in a second.
Mount the X14 Pro on a tripod or a light stand via the 1/4" or 3/8" threads for stable video shooting. To enhance your video quality, you can attach a microphone and a small LED light to both sides of the teleprompter through cold shoes and 1/4" threads.

What advantage does this have over just having the tablet face the person which you need in the first place?

    • +1

      It's science

    • +6

Are you asking what the point of a teleprompter is? Because the point is to be able to read a script while looking right down the barrel of the camera lens, so it looks like you're talking to the viewer directly (e.g. What news anchors do). It's an extremely useful device to those that need it.

      • What I mean is, how is it any different to placing the tablet upright where the teleprompter would be? Why do you need an extra device to reflect the tablet screen?

        • +8

Behind the teleprompter you fit a camera, so the text is projected onto a screen that the lens is immediately behind (but the lens doesn't capture the text coz science). Instead of focusing on text that is slightly off screen from the lens you're looking directly at the lens - so you don't appear to be staring off into space.

Im not convinced at this size / scale it will make a huge difference though..

        • +1

the idea is the person at the other end thinks you are looking directly at them (ie. your camera) vs your eyes going off to a screen.

        • The difference is.. putting your tablet upright where the teleprompter glass sits would block the lens of the camera behind!
Having a teleprompter essentially is a see through glass/mirror (aka one way mirror window) that removes the need to glance away from the lens to read the script.
Even having your tablet above, below or to the side of the lens is enough to give the viewer the sense that you are not talking directly to/at them.

    • Not sure

To be honest I have tried Nvidia's eye tracking AI and it works almost better than a prompter.

The dude had the most insane stutter as a kid. Cut him some (profanity) slack.

      • Yeah..

Like that time he stuttered, "Poor kids are just as bright as white kids".. 🤣

I'm reading the news next week so perfect timing.

  • Whose news?

Look at it!! It's not even a teleprompter… its a MIRROR for a tablet! Pointless!

Absolutely no need for this junk. A tablet with autoscroll positioned directly behind the camera will work just fine.
A teleprompter is last century, before tablets and mounts were a thing. All this is, is a mirror mount for a tablet. Stupidity.

    • +3

how exactly do you think other commercial teleprompters work?

      • -3

Controlled by a 3rd person and allows all the electronics and transmission hardware to be placed lower to the camera barrel and projected up to a simple mirror. This allows easier operation of the camera by the camera operator.

Commerical teleprompters have a purpose. This mirror mount does not.

        • +2

This has a remote control so the user can control the speed.

Its designed as a cheapest best possible solution for a single person to use.

This device does have a use as it does the exact same effect for a single person at home in a confined space - read text while looking directly down the barrel of a camera, with a remote to control the speed.

Just because you don't need it doesn't mean it has no purpose.

@oznik: Dude… a bluetooth remote controller is available for a few bucks. If you want to spend $130 for a mirror for a tablet go right ahead :).

            • +1

@UFO: ok so now you are changing your story that its not good value for money.

I mean it comes with a case to protect the mirror, a foldable cover to stop light glare, a tripod mount, the remote.

Sure you could maybe aliexpress search all that shit and save a few bucks, or just buy this.

              • -3

                @oznik: changing my story?

OK champ… have a good one.

                • -1

@UFO: UFO yes, you changed the point of contention. Go look up reason and logic in the dictionary. And take a chill pill.

                  • @eggboi: First comment was about it being a mirror. Last comment was it being a mirror.

I didn't change anything. What was that about reason and logic :) Fail!

As someone who works in film production and uses one of these regularly (not this exact one). It's an extremely useful piece of kit if you're looking for a cheap alternative to a professional grade teleprompter setup.

Any of the above commenters who are claiming "it's $130 for a mirror", or "just have the tablet face the person" do not know what they're talking about.

For those who don't know, the point of an autocue (or teleprompter) is that you can have an on camera presenter reading from a prepared script, which is being reflected from software on an ipad off a piece of one way mirror positioned in-front of the camera lens, so the camera is filming through one side of the mirror, and the words are on the other side only visible to the presenter. The desired effect being that when viewed through the camera, it looks as though the presenter is looking directly into the lens and not reading a script.

In a professional capacity its very helpful (often strictly required) when filming politicians, CEOs and other people who usually arrive on set to film an address or speech which they didn't write themselves, and is usually far too long to memorise on the spot.

The idea that you don't need this piece of equipment because you can place an iPad behind or beside the camera, completely misses the point of this piece of kit, which is to get a shot of your talent speaking directly into camera. If you work in film or video you will be aware that there is a big different between talent looking INTO camera, and looking slightly above or below the camera.

If you don't know what this is for, you probably don't need it, which is fine. Plenty of other bargains to be had.

It's blowing my mind that (presumably) fully grown and (presumably) functional adults don't know what a teleprompter is and why they are used. The "it's just a mirror!!!" or "just look at the camera" comments are just… wow.

You'd have thought that maybe the tiny fraction of the population that didn't get it five years ago would have figured it out via Zooms calls during covid or Facetime calls with family by now.

      • +1

        it's just a mirror ;),

    I’m Ron Burgundy?

  • Best example is the Australian Christian Lobby: Since they use a teleprompter they look more credible.

    • So credible we'll never have gay marriage!

      • This has NOTHING to do with the hardware!

However Scotty's bots have at work negging anything true that could affect his profit line!
Your choice to worship Murdoch and drown in his sewage!

  • Sold out before could buy :(

if you want to buy Neewer products buy from Amazon. Never buy from their website. They will take your money but never send you the product. I am contacting them for more than 3 weeks now they did not send the product and refusing to refund.
