  • Do these things actually make a noticeable difference?

    • Some swear by it some say no.

That's BS - hepa filtration has been proven over decades to remove particulates. It's in every international health recommendation. What hard data are you possibly referring to?

        • The email i received from nsw health stating that they didnt have any evidence that they were doing much for anyone. They came and took them out of all of the offices

@kimba88: That might say more about NSW Health than it does about air purifiers.

          • @kimba88: They can only improve performance when people are actually trying to do something.

          • @kimba88: Unfortunate isn't it that the body supposedly looking after the health of NSW residents would look towards politics and "economics" rather than science and medical knowledge.

          • @kimba88: This was that nsw health said they had no evidence that the air purifiers were actually preventing covid-19 infections

There is research showing they remove particulates, but much less research showing they improve symptoms of people in those environments. If we’re talking about animal allergens or dust for example. Can depend on the use case though. If there are actual toxins in the air it’s more helpful I think.

          • @NoshTwin: Symptoms depend on illness or condition or whatever other criteria for the person. They don't cure cancer, nor generally stop diaorehrea. But they can prevent heart disease, onset of asthma disease, lung cancers/damage induced by pm2.5 particulates. Asthma attacks and allergies are generally brought on my much larger particles (pm10 and up).

Depends what you mean by noticeable difference? Removing smoke particulates during a bush fire or when cooking - definitely. Removing carbon dioxide, chlorine gas, carbon monoxide - not a chance.

      • What about clothing fibers and shit that floats in the air when you let the sunlight through a window that makes it visible?

        • You'd need to run it on high power to pull in large particulates that you can see - but they do trap dust. The bigger the unit (and CADR) the better able it is to suck in more particles when run on high speed.

Depends what you're trying to filter.
COVID germs - ventilation is better than filtration.
Bushfire smoke (eg summer 19-20) - seal off ventilation and air leaks and do what you can on filtration

    • I had a cheap mini air filter from Aldi, ran it in my car for weeks and the filter never gathered any dust.

The larger Xiaomi one I have at home I opened it after 6 months and the amount of dust it gathered was sickening.
